I love musicals. I mean, not all of them, but as a general rule musicals are ace.

I didn't like the very very fake orange blood though. I much preffered the version on the telly that had Ray Winstone (?) in it! That's was bloody brilliant!!

i like some musicals though. "across the universe" was nice and i don't even like the beatles. "chansom's d'amour" is gayest movie i've ever seen (it's about a gay relationships and it's in french) but it was amusing.

"sweeney todd" was bad every way around. The atmosphere (or lack of) was for me the biggest problem (besides the bad music). Tim burton really needs to find other tricks besides cgi and stop being lazy

'Singin' in the Rain' is more or less unbridled joy in cinematic form. Except for the 'Broadway melody' bit which stops the film in its tracks, but we can fast-forward through it these days.

Yeah, musicals are great. I realised this with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, cheers Joss. Of course, most are tedious, and modern ones are almost all terrible. (Including, I fear, Jerry Springer the Opera. A most disappointing, obvious thing.) Mind you, Blackpool was pretty good, despite cribbing songs.

Phantom of the Opera was always a fave of mine. I hated Cats though, which was rather saddening :(

Moulin Rouge is very very good.
Classic stuff I like: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Calamity Jane, Singing In The Rain, On The Town, Top Hat, Funny Face. That's off the top of my head.

I can understand you not liking musicals, particularly stage musicals, which are pretty dire by and large, but saying they're rubbish just because you don't like them is wrong. The work that went into some of the Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire musicals is nothing short of astounding. Those dance routines, which were rehearsed ad nauseum and shot full frame at all times - i.e. there was no clever editing and close up shots of feet - you saw the whole dance routine being done by the dancer - are breathtaking.

Show me a man who wouldn't, while walking home at night with a hot date in the rain, want to be able to dance like Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain and I'll show you someone who has no joy for life!

Ooh... Is it a musical? You could argue that if it is then something like Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a musical.

I really noticed this watching Chicago after watching Singing in the Rain. The difference in how they shot the dance sequences was amazing.

Bah, I've only seen 190 of these. Must work harder. Only have about five on my 'to see' list as well.

Part of the charm was the kooky casting. I admit to not really liking Nicole Kidman - in fact the best bit in the film is her dying. But seriously, I went into it with some knowledge of film-making and was wowed more than anything by the spectacle - it could only have been made by a screaming queen like Baz Luhrman - even his name evokes a feeling of cabaret.

Out of interest, are you arguing that the dance sequences are stifingly edited and clearly consist of inferior talent, because if so - please rant. I love a good rant. Especially against Chicago.
