Ooh! Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is in my top three books! Have you read Susanna Clarke's short stories set within the same world, 'The Ladies of Grace Adieu'? I also have a radio short story she did about a Sphinx in an attic, which is pretty wonderful.
