This could be huge

So I was reading reddit and came across something interesting.

Bascially Salon and the New York Times have both stated that Palin uses private email with her people to avoid being subpoenaed. Which is of course outrageous.

The new york times saying

Quote:
Interviews show that Ms. Palin runs an administration that puts a premium on loyalty and secrecy. The governor and her top officials sometimes use personal e-mail accounts for state business; dozens of e-mail messages obtained by The New York Times show that her staff members studied whether that could allow them to circumvent subpoenas seeking public records.

Rick Steiner, a University of Alaska professor, sought the e-mail messages of state scientists who had examined the effect of global warming on polar bears. (Ms. Palin said the scientists had found no ill effects, and she has sued the federal government to block the listing of the bears as endangered.) An administration official told Mr. Steiner that his request would cost $468,784 to process.

When Mr. Steiner finally obtained the e-mail messages — through a federal records request — he discovered that state scientists had in fact agreed that the bears were in danger, records show.

“Their secrecy is off the charts,” Mr. Steiner said.

and

Quote:

While Ms. Palin took office promising a more open government, her administration has battled to keep information secret. Her inner circle discussed the benefit of using private e-mail addresses. An assistant told her it appeared that such e-mail messages sent to a private address on a “personal device” like a BlackBerry “would be confidential and not subject to subpoena.”

Ms. Palin and aides use their private e-mail addresses for state business. A campaign spokesman said the governor copied e-mail messages to her state account “when there was significant state business.”

On Feb. 7, Frank Bailey, a high-level aide, wrote to Ms. Palin’s state e-mail address to discuss appointments. Another aide fired back: “Frank, this is not the governor’s personal account.” Mr. Bailey responded: “Whoops~!”

Which made it clear that Palin uses a personal email account to bipass the FOI and so on in america.

It appears that until last night Palin who could one day be president, used [email protected] for most official business.

So then (and this is where it gets murkey) somebody hacked her yahoo email account (by the l33t skill of guess her obvious security question) and routed around for a bit, then decided to post the log in details on 4chan. One of the homes of anonymous.

I've forgotten about anonymous since the whole scientology thing but Anonymous having the email account of the possible VP is going to have some pretty big consequences... If this is true and a big deal then McCain who admits to never using a computer can't really be trusted to react sensibly to this.

That reddit page linked to a load of screen grabs about 20 mins ago. It doesn't now.

But one of the comments does link to this archive of 4chan talking about what they have called "The Incident."

NSFW - as it's 4chan

It features this picture....

I'm not sure what's worse here, Anonymous providing more ammunition for the GOP's victim complex, or that Palin may just have committed a crime by eliminating the account (it's possible that some of the emails in the account are official correspondence that were sent via Yahoo to try and protect herself from subpoena requests)...

Thats a good point. gov.sarah@yahoo and this one have been deleted and it does appear that they were both used for official business. If she is responsible then it is a crime.

Apparently a "white knight" spoiled all their fun by changing the password for the account soon after it was published and emailing the new password to one of Palins colleagues.

This is news worthy. Massively news worthy. So It will be interesting whether this story appears anywhere or is just ignored.

Ha ha, indeed.

Ok, so the 'news' has been escalated to Gawker.

http://gawker.com/5051193/sarah-palins-personal-email-account-hacked

I don't think it's on digg yet, but that article will make the top of digg in probably the next 6 hours or so. Then maybe another 12 - 24 hrs before 'proper' news start to touch it. An AP release, and then on from their.

I'm predicting a bbc news article friday afternoon? By the end of the week this should be huge.

For a 'nothing to hide, nothing to fear' republican to delete her entire email accpunt at the first sign of snooping it's wonderfully hypocritical.

Technically this should end her running for Vice president, and get her sacked in alaska. I doubt that will happen though. If this just disappears it will be worrying...

Wow already in the guardian!

A bit of hypothetical, unthought through paranoia here: Lets pretend I was a web savvy republican given the task of cleaning up an unqualified questionable VP candidate who is going to be put forward for purely political reasons to garner the vote of Clinton's fans.

I need to deal with the fact she is facing increasing pressure to release the emails from her private email account (gov.sarah) that she has been using for official business to avoid being subpoenaed and to bitch about people talk of the record and get people fired. Generally exploit her position.

So I need to get that account deleted. But if I delete that account Sarah and myself could be sent to jail for destroying evidence.

So I make a second account and let her fill it up for a while, then I leak the password to an anonymous message board then because of this 'hack' and I justify the necessity of deleting both accounts.

Of course that would require a web savvy republican....

(I :luv: Scarlett more.)

It begins.

I believe O'Reillys talking 'bout Gawker from the 'newsworthy' comment rather than wikileaks...

Not a single mention of the work emails being sent through the yahoo account which is also illegal.

Thats my point though.

In my mind I'm tying this in with Larry Lessigs comments about a digital 9/11.

If thats to be believed a digital patriot act exists, and they are just waiting for an excuse to pass it.

Palin breaking the law won't be it, but still...

I'm beginning to wonder if Palin has been reading this thread, and has gone for option number 3. Smart cookie, if so.

Still, she's perhaps a mite too quick to be throwing her Legions Of Doom onto their funeral pyres in Eastern Europe, and also has a thing or two to learn about security (as she's clearly set her password to "password" - this sort of thing is Evil Overlord 101 stuff, woman.)

Fairly prominent article on GU now:

FBI investigators are examining an email account belonging to the vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, after hackers broke into it and posted contents on the internet.

I may be wrong, but "The Incident" hinted at by the hacking 4Channer has yet to be released, hasn't it? Could it be the reason Bill O'Reilly was turning such a dark hue of purple with rage over the story is that the Republican hype machine is determined to discredit Anon, so that when the big thing is leaked ("Sarah Palin routinely shoots puppies in the face") no-one will take it seriously?

It probably doesn't even need saying that should the person having their email 'hacked' be from the Democratic party, the line would have been "the Democrats claim they can keep our great nation safe. They can't even keep their email passwords safe!" and little else.

Maybe not disapointingly.

According to wikipedia the poster responsible for the inital hack posted this on 4chan (though by definition you can't say it was him)

Quote:
Hello, /b/ as many of you might already know, last night sarah palin’s yahoo was “hacked” and caps were posted on /b/, i am the lurker who did it, and i would like to tell the story.

In the past couple days news had come to light about palin using a yahoo mail account, it was in news stories and such, a thread was started full of newfags trying to do something that would not get this off the ground, for the next 2 hours the acct was locked from password recovery presumably from all this bullshit spamming.

after the password recovery was reenabled, it took seriously 45 mins on wikipedia and google to find the info, Birthday? 15 seconds on wikipedia, zip code? well she had always been from wasilla, and it only has 2 zip codes (thanks online postal service!)

the second was somewhat harder, the question was “where did you meet your spouse?” did some research, and apparently she had eloped with mister palin after college, if youll look on some of the screenshits that I took and other fellow anon have so graciously put on photobucket you will see the google search for “palin eloped” or some such in one of the tabs.

I found out later though more research that they met at high school, so I did variations of that, high, high school, eventually hit on “Wasilla high” I promptly changed the password to popcorn and took a cold shower…

>> rubico 09/17/08(Wed)12:58:04 No.85782727

this is all verifiable if some anal /b/tard wants to think Im a troll, and there isn’t any hard proof to the contrary, but anyone who had followed the thread from the beginning to the 404 will know I probably am not, the picture I posted this topic with is the same one as the original thread.

I read though the emails… ALL OF THEM… before I posted, and what I concluded was anticlimactic, there was nothing there, nothing incriminating, nothing that would derail her campaign as I had hoped, all I saw was personal stuff, some clerical stuff from when she was governor…. And pictures of her family

I then started a topic on /b/, peeps asked for pics or gtfo and I obliged, then it started to get big

Earlier it was just some prank to me, I really wanted to get something incriminating which I was sure there would be, just like all of you anon out there that you think there was some missed opportunity of glory, well there WAS NOTHING, I read everything, every little blackberry confirmation… all the pictures, and there was nothing, and it finally set in, THIS internet was serious business, yes I was behind a proxy, only one, if this shit ever got to the FBI I was fucked, I panicked, i still wanted the stuff out there but I didn’t know how to rapidshit all that stuff, so I posted the pass on /b/, and then promptly deleted everything, and unplugged my internet and just sat there in a comatose state

Then the white knight fucker came along, and did it in for everyone, I trusted /b/ with that email password, I had gotten done what I could do well, then passed the torch , all to be let down by the douchebaggery, good job /b/, this is why we cant have nice things.

Hacked by the son of a Demmycrat, apparently:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/09/18 ... continues/

Quote:
The son of a democratic state representative from Tennessee is at the center of an online investigation into who broke in to the email account of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and shared some of its contents with the world.

Representative Mike Kernell, told a reporter with the Tennessean that his 20-year-old son, David, is the individual believed by bloggers to be involved in the hacked account. David Kernell is a student at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. The FBI and Secret Service, which were reported to be investigating the breach, have yet to publicly identify David Kernell as a suspect.

The revelation follows a first-person account that was briefly posted to the 4chan website by a user who went by the name Rubico. Bloggers quickly linked the user to an email address belonging to David Kernell, but until now, that connection had not been confirmed.
