All of my drinks are named after health ministers.

Remember kids - "binge drinking"* is having more than three pints of lager in any one evening! You anti-social bastards.

Several of the above. Can't see an option for it just becoming routine to go out and get pissed on a Friday and Saturday, I suppose it might come under boredom.

Can't remember the last time I got drunk, it was so long ago. I guess I got a little tipsy last time I was on a plane; the altitude seems to really fuck with your tolerance, especially on an empty stomach.

The last drink I had was a Sloe Gin with my dad, about 5 weeks ago. Yum.

I'm not on them yet. I stopped taking them a while back now, if Coleman decides I am best on them again then I'll have to have them.

I'm not an alcoholic by any means...but I do like a drink :p

Border-dependent for me - hooray! I rarely get near 50 units, and those occasions are almost never closely-spaced, but I drink out of boredom, stress and depression.

If you narrow your browser window, the longer bars turn into cock-n-ballses.

Oh no, that's Smirnoff ice and WKD

Mmmm...Smirnoff.....reminds me of 'Metz'-the Judderman!! :D

I get Metz and Meths confused. I understand that one is to be drank socially from a bottle, the other is on street corners and drank from a brown bag?

I have Malibu and no coke...this saddens me. This is also a good thing at the same time though.

I drink because it makes sense

I am deeply, deeply offended by this.... :p

I don't drink. Well, I do but only when I rarely go out and I usually slow down from 11pm and stop by 1am. I don't like being drunk, I think it is mostly pointless. Meh.

I drink regularly in social situations and on my own, and require around 4 pints just to get a nice 'buzz' on. That means I'm a terrible pisshead, according to the BBC page, but I've actually cut down a lot over the last few months.

All of these silly surveys and attempts at pigeon-holing people into categories for every aspect of their lives can sod off, of course...

I drink to excess on the rare occasion that it makes sense. This is usually at my house or other people's, to minimise the bar bill. About once a year. I think that makes me a herbacious perennial drinker.

If it's fun, it's not good for you and it's evil and you must feel bad about it.

I was very taken with a line of House's - it went something along the lines of "so what if I'm an addict? If I continue to do my job well, function as a member of society, and don't stab anyone in the face, what does it matter that I have to take Vicadin? No one knows I do it unless I tell them."

There's nothing morally wrong about any addictive substance unless your use of it impacts negatively on someone else. However, the governmint's approach to drugs and alcohol has been that "it's automatically always horribly bad and evil, m'kay. STOP IT OR YOU'LL GO BLIND".

My wine's corked....bollocks...

Did anyone else hear that thing for woe-men on radio Shropshire? It said women are meant to drink a glass or two of wine a day to help them ct the risks of dying early or some shit? Then there's the relatively new ad's on the tv saying, 'If you are a woman and like to drink more than 1 glass of wine a day...'bad for your health...yadda yadda yadda...' I mean-WHAT?!

Shin - ignore the government about everything. They make it all up. They decided to cut the recommended amount of alcohol a woman should drink when pregnant from 1 unit a day (week?) to zero, even though the evidence said the previous figure was the correct one, and there was no evidence for saying that any alcohol at all ever was harmful.

The "five portions of fruit and veg a day" thing was also plucked out of the air with no evidence.

Considering the basis for that, though it is completely unquantified, is essential vitamins and minerals, does it follow that taking appropriate suppliments completely eliminates the need for fruit and veg in the diet?

Presumably yes, provided you also have enough extra water and fibre from elsewhere.

On the House quote, the fact that I was still completing my university work to a high standard and still being a harmless, super-amiable sort of chap were my main excuses for my heavy drinking over the past two years. Now, however, I'm getting worried about Cirrhosis. ;)

Sorry Mr.C, but I don't agree with drinking if pregnant full stop-but that's probably because I can't have kids and I feel that anyone that jeopardises that gift is a bastard...sorry -_-; I normally agree with everything you say otherwise x

Hardly. Drinking isn't a necessity, crossing the road to get somewhere is. You are not willingly poisoning your body by crossing the road are you?

Well....exhausts and stuff I suppose but-gah!

Yeah, but that's *your* problem not anyone else's. And anyway, you may as well worry about your calorie and fat intake. Or the ghastly chemicals you're taking in by drinking out of plastic bottles. Or the cancer you'll get from the cosmic rays. Or skin cancer from being outside too much.

shin wrote:

That's the point though - mild drinking doesn't jeopardise your unborn baby at all, according to the actual evidence. What's worse are the million and one chemicals you're exposed to via makeup, passing cars, plastics etc.

Apropos of nothing, if Mimi-style rainbow bubbles actually existed, I'd buy them for all of my friends. I live in near-constant fear of accidents or attacks happening to them. It's hellish!

Also, what's this about plastic bottle chemicals? I had no idea anything from the bottles themselves tainted the drinks. :'(

It was, most doctors will tell you 3 is perfect, however, crucially there has to be variety in that. People are too thick to grasp that so they said "5" in the hope 3 different things will be in there without it being stupidly high as a number.

Theoretically yes, but the body absorbs stuff from those supplements very poorly.

So I can have twice as many, and be fine?

It's a serious question - we're campaigning heavily to get people healthier by getting them to eat fruit and veg, but it's surely a damned sight cheaper and easier to just take suppliments, if people aren't going to do it any other way?
