Interesting. I hope it's a 100% faithful conversion of AB3D2.

XBLA co-op remake of Alien Breed Tower Assault please!

I struggled through so much of Alien Breed 3D on my A1200 trying to convince myself I didn't need Doom and a PC.

Playing a postage stamp window at about 5 FPS.

It was quite good though my mind is telling me, so maybe me self delusion worked...

AB3D was good, though. I certainly enjoyed it at the time, but have yet to revisit it in the emu years. AB3D2 was a glistening pile of pus covered horse shite.

I didn't even know there was a sequel.

Gloom must have overshadowed it. Ho Ho Ho.

You did need a super wazzo accelerated Amiga to run it at sufficient rez and size. It was an interactive tech demo masquerading as a game.

Go you OUT OF THIS THREAD.

But yeah, AB:Tower Assault and AB: Deluxe both has massive difficulty spikes that I just couldn't pass. Maybe it was as I was young, or maybe they were really rubbish. But I've still a real fondness for the game. Watching Aliens on my friends VHS then recreating it on my Amiga. Awesomeness.

Being able to shoot through doors if you didn't have enough keys was good, but the game was too hard.

Oh and a Developer has commented on the Eurogamer thread:

Quote:
We can't give out any real detail yet, but for those who enjoyed the original I think you'll find we'll do it more than justice - and for those who have no idea what the game was, they'll find something of note to play (with a pal, if they like). And I can say safely suggest it's not a FPS, nor a re-dressed port. There's a ton of energy for this inside the company and we've ached for this opportunity for a while - we certainly don't intend to f**k it up.

Not a redressed port? If they start with the basic idea, and construct a new game with better controls it could be great.

Bah, they were making a new Alien Breed game back in 2001/2 (it was going to be called Alien Breed 2004) and that got cancelled. I'm not expecting anything more of this.

I've since taken down my Alien Breed fansite (I Want Fish) simply because there's no point in keeping it up. It was especially annoying (for me) because the guy behind Dream 17 got Team17 to allow freeware downloads of all of the Alien Breed games on his website, yet I asked T17 first and they told me there was no chance. My site was (and still would be, had I not taken it down) the definitive Alien Breed resource on the 'net and all it was missing was the full downloads. Bitter, moi?

Nah, Ben (Squirminator, the guy behind Dream 17) is a good bloke, but that bit of "hypocrisy" on T17s part really got my heckles up. They knew my site existed still at the time as I was still friendly with a couple of the original Alien Breed developers so just a courtesy e-mail to find out if I still wanted to put them up would have been nice.

While I enjoyed some plays of Alien Breed back in the day, I have little doubt that it has aged badly. It should be interesting to see what they do with it to jazz it up a little (and avoid being sued, sadly), though. A good bit of co-op blasting is difficult to seriously screw up.

I have an idea that they'll almost certainly use, unfortunately. Twin sticks. I can smell it in the wind.

Then don't wave your cock about! :p

(I can barely remember what else Team 17 made apart from AB and worms.)

Well they do need to update the controls somehow. It was like handling an unresponsive drunk...

I reckon Superfrog or Arcade Pool. Not Assassin as that was simply a Strider rip-off. Very good Strider rip-off.

I went back to Alien Breed a couple of years ago. It really, really, really hasn't aged well.

Alien Breed 2 sucked Donkey cocks as you could not finish it in a 2 player game due to the bridge being to narrow. So I phoned them for clarifiacation on this point when I was 14...

I found Team 17 games to be totally soulless and seemingly loved by those Amiga owners who were interested in flashy graphics and parallel scrolling and what not.

Oddly I played the demos of Project X and er... that Street Fighter-esque fighting game to be really enjoyable. The full games were anything but.

Body Blows? Yeah, they somehow managed to break the game sometime between producing the demo and delivering the final game to the duplicators. They should've stuck a warning in the demo.

I seem to recall Body Blows Galactic being quite good, though. Much faster, at any rate. Or one of the spin-offs, anyway.

Ditto. I often got the impression from their stuff that they had just transplanted a bunch of people from the demo scene -- no idea how accurate that is, of course, but it always seemed that they had filled the roles of gfx ace, maestro composer and guru coder without troubling themselves to get anyone on-board with the slightest appreciation of what made the genres they entered worth playing.

Now, modern versions of that old IP made with wiser, more experienced hands? That's another matter...

I'd agree in the most part, but I liked Assassin though. Body Blows, and especially Galatic, struck me as too many characters used without much differentiating them from each other. No soul, as Craig said.

They also did Super Stardust (and the less super one of it), that bowling game that AP hated, and, er, I think that's it. I think the best thing they did was provide plenty of comedy material for AP2.

I take exception to the suggestion that AB3D2 was a tech demo masquerading as a game. Anyone who has played it knows that it wasn't masquerading as anything.
