It's a good idea really, because if you look over 25 then you're going to be over 21, unless you've had a really hard life. It just makes it easier for the shop to make sure they're not serving people who are underage.

The legal age for purchasing alcohol in both on and off premises is still 18 (cigarettes have gone up to 18 though).

Almost all premises are going to have a 'Challenge 21' sticker up though which may have led to a misunderstanding.

'Challenge 25' is getting more common as well as Tmuk has observed - with ridiculously some places now operating an ID if you look under 30 policy.

I've got the body of an 18 year old.

In my freezer.

People always think I am about 24/25, but that's because I have a beard.

I've never been ID'd in this country (even when I was underage buying alcohol and 18 cert videos and such) I went to the US when I was 20 and was only able to buy alcohol in 2 places:

1) Some Korean Corner shop where the owner just didn't care.

2) A nightclub where I knew the bouncer so he let me in (In America you get ID'd at the door, not the bar)

But then they ID you in America if you look under 35! (if my memory is correct)

What Guwuffle said.

I am one of those places that operates a Think 30 policy. Makes it a lot easier simply because it is so ridiculous.

I saw a think 30 one in anewsagent somewhere, and some lad was trying to buy cans and the woman just let him have them since its such a ridiculous policy. He was clearly over 18 mind but neither did he look 30,

Quite a lot of places simply refuse to believe I'm over 18, let alone 22. Curse my frustratingly foetal fizzog.

(Interestingly, I never get anybody squinting to try and figure out how old I am when I'm sporting a beard, even though I just look like a baby wearing a joke-shop disguise.)

Ok, so what excuse does everyone else have?

Out of interest, how did you come to be here (I don't mean to be rude, I'm just interested)?

It's a bloody stupid idea. Why should people have to carry around a passport just to make a perfectly legal purchase? The law is 18, not 25. Treating everyone like a criminal and idiot because we can't trust the kids is just going to make things worse. Some places check, some don't. It's always been that way, and will always be that way, cretinous policy or no.

I got ID-ed for the first time in years a while back, buying a bottle of cider from a checkout woman I'd chatted to several times, including chatting about the four years since I lived with a bunch of students, a year working in canterbury and how the papers are full of shit and london is not really full of people randomly stabbing each other, just a few hopeless gangster kids stabbing each other and occasionally an unfortunate third party. I was also buying salad, vegetables and several herbs. How many underage drinkers nip down to the shop to buy parsley, celery and booze, do you reckon? Fucking ridiculous, and no, I didn't have ID on me, because I was out to buy some dinner, not apply for a bank account. So, I put the bottle back, and stopped by another shop on the way home instead, exactly as any underaged drinker would have done, too. It's pointless and serves only to irritate and infantilise people.

We have 72 voters yet only 12 or so different people posting in this thread (if not the whole board). Amusant.

These 2 facts may very well be related imo.

I doubt it. People looking young "for their age" is almost certainly to do with their genes mostly, followed by a very small amount attributable to lifestyle and an even smaller amount attributable to potions and lotions.

Wrinkles are 90% caused by UV rays, according to the scientists I worked with at L'Oréal. Moisturisers only play a tiny tiny part in helping prevent wrinkles. The hypocricy of this was amazing.

They get away with it as the moisturisers contain Sun Block. Which is all the anti aging creams really are. So you may as well buy (much cheaper) sun cream instead.

I got IDed today. Not for an 18. Not even for a 15.

I look like I've been around the block a few times.

Not been ID'd recently though.

I used to suck at guessing ages when I worked behind a bar. Also: I just didn't care.
