You've got one crack at this, explanations are welcome.

I'm going to kick things off by banning the use of the world kid (incorpoating "kiddies") to mean child or children. If anyone uses the term, I assume they are a moron. It is detestable and while the past accusations of being an americanism are falsehood, one can understand why they came about.

Same one I always use - Podcast. There's nothing specific to an iPod about it, nor is it in any way 'cast'. It's an audio file.

Worse is, it used to be webcast before the iPod generation rebranded it. Cunts.

Weren't webcasts streamed, at least making the "-cast" bit somewhat more accurate?

They were also saved to a file for later downloading sometimes. Anyway, what's the difference? If you save every single byte you've been streamed you end up with the original file. And you can stream "Podcasts". Infact it fucks me off if the "podcast" isn't downloadable quite easily.

Amusingly the wiki entries for Podcast and Webcast don't even think to reference each other in the slightest way. Check out this description of a podcast from the webcast entry:

Quote:
A webcast is a media file distributed over the Internet using streaming media technology. As a broadcast may either be live or recorded, similarly, a webcast may either be distributed live or recorded. Essentially, webcasting is “broadcasting” over the Internet.

The generally accepted use of the term webcast is the "transmission of linear audio or video content over the Internet".

What's that? They're exactly the same. YES THE FUCKING ARE. FUCK OFF APPLE.

I thought podcast came from webcast, but from being packaged so it can be downloaded for listening on an ipod specifically, or a portable mp3 player generally. The end result may just be another mp3 file or something, but it's as much about the process of development and reason for being, as the actual thing itself.

"Addicting". Typical moron web usage - "this song is really addicting".

"I could care less". It's "I couldn't care less", you fucking retarded (and almost certainly American, as it's them that seem to use the phrase) cunt. If you "could care less", than that means that you do care, on account of the fact you're saying that the potential exists for you to care an amount less than you currently do.

The way in which "photoshop" has become a by-word not just for any form of image editing, but now just any form of editing at all. Such as the banned racist Bugs Bunny cartoon I was watching on youtube the other day to which some cretin had added the comment "This isn't real, it's probably photoshopped or something." I hope that person was later killed in a horrible mining accident.

'IRREGARDLESS'.

Gngh. Don't have to explain that one do I, other than describing a horrible fate for anyone who isn't an amusing booming voiced character in a sci-fi parody Futrama thingy/early-quality-Simpsons.

Best use: "Irregardless! I am your god now." - Homer.

Worst use: Politicians. Repeatedly.

Challenging.

When what you really, really mean to say is hard or difficult. Used by, but not exclusively, politicians and local government when given airtime on BBC news.

You're silly: 'kid' is fine.

Ignorant, on the other hand, is the word that keeps on giving.

American Heritage Dictionaries defines ignorant as:
Quote:
1. Lacking education or knowledge.
2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake.
3. Unaware or uninformed.

But, of course, there's no reason why it can't mean 'STUPID OLOLOL' as well!!

"Credit crunch".

It doesn't mean anything. It doesn't have any relevance to bits of the economy being broken.

I don't care if I know what you mean, I am not going to stand idly by and let something that is the exact opposite of what you mean be an acceptable substitute.

My personal bug-bear are horrid abbreviations; especially when used when talking.

1)Obv. - Should only be used in jest.
2)Natch - this shouldn't even be used in text, you twat!
3)Ples. *shudder* Oh fuck off, you utter wanker, that is the single most annoying abbreviation in the world! Except for, that is, ....
4)Imposso. Look, I know you are a teenage girl with more thumbs than brain cells, but please try and use English.

"I could care less" only works if you use it in a really specific way, sort of "I could care less, but it would be difficult due to the fact that I care so little currently". Of course, most people don't say it like this.

I'd like to ban people from existance, which would solve many more problems than just the words they use.

@Chris: An EVE radio DJ persists in using the word WIN as a descriptive term. 'I love spaceships, they're WIN'.

Brilliantly, where I come from, everyone seems to use it to mean "to ignore". As is, you ignore someone and they shout at you "don't be so ignorant". Which is brilliantly ironic as they don't know what the word means. Woohoo. I saw a good viddie on youtube of some woman saying that to Busta Rhymes and him flying off the handle because he thinks she called him a thick blackie.

One of the EvE radio DJ's was in a corporation I was in. I never won any of his competitions, but at least I got a shout out every show. mostly accompanied with "He's in system X in shipY with fit Z, go get him"

Yesyesyesyesyes. My estimation of someone immediately plummets when they use the word in this context. I've even tried to find another word to replace it for its intended use but the closest I've got is 'arbitrary' which isn't quite right.
If we can extend this to phrases, all this 'I'm loving...*noun*' gets right up my nose. Where did it come from? It's spread everywhere in the space of a few years, even to the BBC news, where that patronising wench Sian Williams liberally throws it about every morning.

I'd like to ban words created from a joining of two existing words if there's already a phrase that's appropriate.

I also really dislike words of the form 'double(blank)', especially if the result is a verb. If you think you're 'double(blank)ing', please rethink your word choice.

Well, if somebody was using two objects at once, or twice as much of an object as they normally would, they'd be double(object)ing.

If they're baking a cake, they might be 'doubleicing', or 'doublejamming'. ('Doubling up ingredients' is what they probably meant to say, but I don't like the sound of that either and I don't know why. I'd say 'using twice as much'.)

That's a bad example.

You may wish to have a quiet word with America, then... :)

They're allowed their own language, but it does get in the way a bit. One that seems to have quietened down for the mo but always bugged me was/is

"You just can't"

which in American seems to mean "you can't simply..." but in English ought to mean "you cannot at all". But was used by English types as the former. Grrr, etc.

Doublejamming sounds doubleplusgood to me :)

angle.

when used by grieving chavs to describe their dead-by-joyriding friends and family usually in overly fluffy terms completely at odds with how they lived their lives. often posted on Bebo, whatever that is.

often preceeded by the word 'are'.
