Nothing there for no-break twitch-screaming grind. I feel slighted.

Anyway, I enjoy several genres there, equally. Am I some kind of emotional chimera?

Music does affect my mood; if I put some Pig Destroyer on I get all hyped up, Khanate make me feel like utter shit, Sigur Ros make me want to hug people. I suppose that would make a more interesting study, how genres affect people...

Right then, using my three favourite genres, I am -

High self-esteem, outgoing, hardworking, low self-esteem, creative, not hard working, not gentle

Umm.

I can see a certain amount of truth in it. You had all that clueless Dad-crap on the BBC this morning 'Heavy Metal fans? Gentle??!!', but actually, I've not once seen a genuine fight at a metal gig/ club night and I've seen plenty at your more mainstream events. I think it's fair to say that intelligent people who are less likely to smash a bottle over someone's head, are more likely to branch out and experience more fringe genres of music.

And, generally speaking, the more someone looks "bad" - beard, long hair, tattoos, etc. - the nicer they're likely to be.

I, personally, never trust a short-haired, clean-shaven man.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever read. In fact, I feel a Comical Gnomes class rage bubbling within me. We now go to the Comical Gnomes Rage Forecasting Centre for a report...

"Both the public and co-workers are asking, 'Just how enraged is Nervouspete going to get?' It's a question on a lot of minds, since Nervouspete has been overdue for a screaming rant for some weeks now. With all that pent-up pressure, and small tremors of irratibility indicated during a recent accidental viewing of the Orangina advert, this could be a system ready to blow."

Thanks, CG.

Jesus-fucking-Christ though, I've never seen anything so blatently bollocks! My coworker Ellie agrees, and indeed was one of the subjects of the 'study'. She rapidly denounced it as a cynical, farcical advertising ploy as the questionaire half way through started asking her as to what her favourite brands were. So in fact it is clearly market research masquerading as a scientific study.

Quote:
"If you know a person's music preference you can tell what kind of person they are, who to sell to. There are obvious implications for the music industry who are are worried about declining CD sales."

As if the 'which of the following musical genres do you like' question wasn't stupid enough. What do I like, eh?

Blues, Jazz, Classical, Indie, Country & Western, Soul and a little bit here and there of quality rap, pop, rock, opera and there's even a few pieces of Indian music I very much like. Only dance doesn't get that much of a look in with me, and even then there's been some borderline dance stuff by chaps like Unkle, David Holmes, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Panda Bear and stuff I like.

So obviously I am: High self-esteem, creative, not hardworking, outgoing, gentle and at ease, hardworking, low-self esteem, not at ease, introvert.

GAGH. JUST FUCK OFF.

A far more pertinent questionaire would be - do you stick to one genre of music or explore? Do you get involved in a music scene? Have you ever wanted to write or perform music? Do you prefer lyrics or the beat or the tune? Do you listen to chart music? Do you go to gigs? Have you met a significant other through music? Name a favourite band and why you love them... and so on.

And even that's a bit rubbish. You can't quantify people by what they like.

Quote:
Professor North described the research as "significant" and "surprising".
- Well he would, the twat.

What's with the obsession that we should be 'targeted' eh? The reason why people think music is going down the fucking tubes is because they look at CD sales and radio play and think there's a herd of fucking morons out there who need to be told what to listen to and be brainwashed with mass advertising. They don't look at people who enjoy small local bands, creating music themselves, looking overseas on the internet and ordering from websites music by obscure (but no trendier for it) bands that they personally love.

But no, because the record industry says sales are down we must all run around thinking that music is nothing more than a shovelware product, instead of the glorious current golden age of variety and lil'l awesome bands that it currently is.

In conclusion, eat shit and die on this one, BBC and twattish-study. Twonk eyes.

Yours, a music librarian.

What a pile of cobblers. What's interesting, though is that radio 2 presented the findings in a totally different way - the big news is that Metal fans are THE SAME as classical music fans (which is shocking, of course, if you're completely clueless), Jazz makes you outgoing and creative pop makes you uncreative. Which is a slightly different pile of cobblers.

Definitely agree there's some fantastic music around, Nervouspete, which is widely accessible because of the Internet, aces local bands etc, but it has to be said the herd of fucking morons bit is frankly true a lot of the time. Teenagers, mostly. The large record companies pedal anything bland because it maximises profit, kids are told that they are being interesting, subversive or rebellious or whatever and Jo whiley can pretend the latest twee pop group sound like the Sex Pistols or Black Sabbath.

That's why sales have gone down - because we've been told that music isn't important. So you might as well download the latest Coldplay or 50 Cent because it's not that big a deal. The best example is Robson and Gerome in the 90s. They were *huge* and accounted for a massive chunk of the growth in the industry at the time and the reason was that the people buying it didn't even buy music at all, usually. Apathy sells. For a bit. Then everyone gets bored and just watches the X factor instead.

Sorry, that was actually a rant wasn't it? And I've only done 5 or so posts. Oh man!

Ditto to this.
Everyone in Metal clubs is lovely (though smelly). You can practically stumble onto them, spilling your pint all over them and not only knocking their pint out of their hands but their gilfriends also, and they'll just say "Nah it's alright. It happens" when you offer to buy them a new car in PLEASEDOIN'THURTME repayment.

Whereas in a shitty tranceathon nation club you get stabbed just for having long hair. PFFT.

I've found that in the last couple of years metal clubs have lost that lovely atmosphere a touch; many of the slanty-haired Job For A Cowbell types will smack you if you spill purple VK on their carefully-distressed ultratight pants.

's good fun kicking their faces off in a pit later though.

Yes. Metal-like substances have been poppy lately. I'm sure metal clubs suffered in the 90s with nu-metal much the same. I wasn't old enough back then to know. Either way; metal clubs tend to have seperate rooms for seperate people. Beards in one room, fringes in another. Excellent.

"Indie" is way too a loose and vague term to really categorise music by, to be honest... :)

It seems to be more a case of people who like things other than mainstream get picked on more, so have lower self esteem. Except for Jazz, Opera and Classical fans, who are all, inevitably, insufferably middle class and comfortable with that, and their Vauxhall Zafira.

Hey, if researchers can make sweeping generalizations and call it fact, so can I.

This is true :)

The 'Yorkshire House' is a great pub and all the bikers, goths e.t.c go there (No Chavs) and they are all really nice, no fights in there! The last one was probably the small one caused by someone hitting on someone else's Mrs and that was 4 years ago!

In my experience it's only the stupid pilled up pikeys that get into fights in the clubs and stuff! I hardly ever go clubbing now, I just stick my my local pubs instead. Plus the techno music crap they play in clubs hurts my ears and makes them bleed >.<

I don't listen to music, and am therefore invisible.
