A lot of you are the enterprising work from home/part time business types. I'm also a part-time business type, although the sum of my efforts is the minimal but handy ability to upgrade my PC as a 'business expense', rather than from my wallet.

How do you recommend making cash on the side? I'm interested, mostly because I'd like to earn a few zillion quid and buy myself an angry island.

Does anyone work two 'employed' jobs? Where they leave work at 5 then go on to somewhere else? My gf did that for a couple of months to plug a bit of a financial deficit, but it near bloody killed her. She was exausted all the time and lost her weekends.

Wouldn't be profitable enough.

Actually I can't remember if Ace has ever said how much he makes from that Second Life stuff?

And if DBSnappa is watching, I'd be interested to know what his Photography rates are. I don't want to be a photographer, obv, I'm just curious ;)

In your case there has to be some way of renting out your ire, be it phone calls or emails to people you want to scream at but can't. You could call it rent-a-vent or something

Where is there a deficit of rage and venomous fury? Switzerland? Sweden? I bet it's a sellers market over there.

We could play a game. How much do you think I make, selling virtual houses to people to pretend to live in, on computer beaches?

Dr Gaywood suggested this to me just yesterday. A 'complain on your behalf' company might actually be viable, hahaha.

If you're willing to toil for at least 2 hours at day at this shit, I'm going to take a stab and say....£300-400 a month.

Nowhere near, sorry. And I don't really toil in those hours so much as noodle around chatting to american chums while dealing with a handful of customer IMs.

I reckon a lot more. I reckon AceAceBaby sits behind a big desk smoking huge cigars looking at the money roll in as people pay for his houses.

I bet people who create huge virtual cocks get more though.

£700?

It seems incredible that people would pay for virtual items in a virtual world which they could actually just make themselves. All credit to you though, if there's a market for it.

It varies from client to client. Editorially (mags and newspapers) the more kudos a client has the less they pay - this is obviously a situation that some of the fashion-wank magazines try to exploit by getting fuckwits to work for nothing. But ultimately nothing is cast in stone. Conde Nast (Vogue, Tatler etc) have a reputation for being poor payers but in my experience they're a lot better than quite a few so called more mainstream clients. So, whereas Easy Living/Vogue/Glamour/Tatler at Conde Nast pay per page on usage of material - usually £100 per page, they also tend to be very generous with their expenses so you can end up making several hundred pounds for a few hours work.
The average I'd say is about £375 per diem plus expenses across most mags - some pay less, others pay significantly more.
The best payers in mag world tend to be the low rent high circulation tat mags like TV listings mags, Hello, OK! etc, though OK in particular can take anything up to 9 months to pay - however, if you get booked for a celeb wedding you will get paid something in the region of five figures.

PR stuff tends to hover around the grand a day mark and advertising is whatever you can screw the company for, which usually involves having to bribe the very poorly paid creative team (it isn't unheard of for Art Director/Copy Writer teams to be on circa £16k pa each, which is below acceptable in London IMO, so giving them a kickback from a large day rate is acceptable IMO

*abandons employment and heads for Second Life*.

If you're making >£1000 month in your spare time selling virtual shit on top of a normal job, then you're the most genius genius on this board. And much less of a twat than I thought you were.

Lend us a tenner.

Yeah, how hard is it to learn to make houses, AceAceBaby? I'm rubbish at art and design, but there must be a way to cash in for anyone who can get good at the scripting language.

To steal CG's phrase, "Anyone can do it." I can show you buildings people have made, people who were complete computer-phobes when they started. Building is all based on dropping primitive shapes on the ground, then stretching/squashing/rotating etc, and linking them together.

Some of the best computer yays I've had were seeing people who couldn't play a computer game, manage to make something like that, or a little robot that follows them around, using basic building methods and library scripts.

Interestingly Gay Dickwood and I were looking at EVE characters for sale on eBay. A char with 60ish million skill points will go for a minimum of £250, and up to 5 or £600 depending on the extras thrown in.

It would cost you more than that in subscriptions for the time taken to get 60m skillpoints though, wouldn't it?

Hmmm, lets see if I can work it out. Let's say you've got a bit of ISK to get these characters a full set of +5s, and learn skills at a tasty average of 2200 points/hour.

For 60 million it'd take.... 1136 days. Hmmm. 3 years of subscription. How much is that?

A slow turnaround for the money, anyway :D

I always laugh, because I was never any good at EVE money making. But with SL, if you're not an actual day-job professional graphics/3d artist, then I think you need a high level of tolerance/interest in virtual worlds and subcultures, or it would seem like a chore. Playing EVE seems like a huge chore to me, and I often end up with nothing much to show for it.

In SL I can go check out a problem for a customer, and he'll be there as a giant wolf with his lipstick out or whatever. In a hot tub. In a malibu style beach home.

I am fascinated by the money and repelled by the Sadville inhabitants. The former quite substantially outweighs the latter, though.

Well you know, most people aren't werewolves with their willies out, but they are there, and it's all very casual in that sense. 90% of people conform to "vanilla" standard/aspirational appearances and accessories, which is part of why people pay for stuff that mimics real life, I think.

It's certainly a platform where someone with some creativity can make some money. Also my friend is playing two gigs this weekend, so I'm hoping to get to one of those, though I'm not usually in SL much at weekends. Maybe I could get the stream URL off him anyway so I can listen outside of SL.

I'm repelled by lazy Register hacks.

As awesome and generous as Ace clearly is with his money (friend, pal, mate), I'm interested in other monies schemes.

CG: Make things and sell them in real life then, that's what I do on the side.

Ace: I did try out SL for a few hours last year, I used the client on the mac. Thought it would be like in Snow Crash :)
I found it pretty difficult to control, the graphics ugly, nobody seemed to be interacting with anyone else, and I just generally didn't have much clue what was going on. Maybe you need someone to show you around.

I could see the appeal of building up your resources and making or buying a property or whatever, but then I couldn't shake off the thought that the time would be better spent trying to improve my lot in real life :)

Much respect to you for actually making money out of it though.

Orlowski is the one thing I could happily see rid of there, the right wing tosspot*. Still, it leavens out against some of the others (Lettice, Leyden, Haines (when he's being serious)), so I can see why they have him.

Lewis Page is the finest thing about that site, though, with Sarah Bee now coming a close second.

*Cowardly too, as he always has comments disabled on his columns.

Start charging sensible prices for coding work. Unless your making websites of this sort of standard you shouldn't really be charging less than £1,000 for a days work.

Depends who they are really, but the golden rule is never say no, just charge yourself out of the job if you don't want to do it.
I've been asked by wealthy men to photograph their trophy g/fs or wives before and I usually charge upwards of a £1k plus expenses, which if you include Hair and Makeup and a studio can see the job rapidly escalating past the £2.5k mark. Funnily enough I don't do very much of those. And I'm not rich by any measure - my career seems to revolve around champagne and showers - i.e. I earn a lot when I work regularly but regularly don't work IYSWIM

Me and a friend brainstormed this idea once. How many times do you need to shout at your bank, but the call centre is engaged? How often do you need to set up a new phone contract but you're busy breaking balls and merging companies? All the time! So why not hire Pod's-Intermediatory-phone-people! They shout at people so you don't have to!

"I'm sorry, due to data protection laws we cannot discuss the matter with anyone but the customer involved" will take some getting past. On Radio 4 this morning they had a woman on who was told to put her seven year old son on the line when she had a complaint to M&S about something she'd ordered for him (and had addressed to him).

Then you don't tell them you're not the customer? Obviously you'll need to provide the service with the relevant details.

Tempting fate here, so problem won't come about now, but it appears thanks to a GF's relative I may be getting paid to scientifically vet a kids book about space :DD

Sure it will be a tiny insignificant sum, but I'll get my name in it and everything!

Wish they'd done that with Button Moon. I spent 20 years thinking the moon was made of a button and that the first man in space was actually a spoon.

I've always thought I could use my MEGA SUPER COOLNESS to make hyperinteractive Second Life gizmos, but I could never get SL to ever ruddy work.
