A lot of you are the enterprising work from home/part time business types. I'm also a part-time business type, although the sum of my efforts is the minimal but handy ability to upgrade my PC as a 'business expense', rather than from my wallet.

How do you recommend making cash on the side? I'm interested, mostly because I'd like to earn a few zillion quid and buy myself an angry island.

Does anyone work two 'employed' jobs? Where they leave work at 5 then go on to somewhere else? My gf did that for a couple of months to plug a bit of a financial deficit, but it near bloody killed her. She was exausted all the time and lost her weekends.

It seems incredible that people would pay for virtual items in a virtual world which they could actually just make themselves. All credit to you though, if there's a market for it.

It varies from client to client. Editorially (mags and newspapers) the more kudos a client has the less they pay - this is obviously a situation that some of the fashion-wank magazines try to exploit by getting fuckwits to work for nothing. But ultimately nothing is cast in stone. Conde Nast (Vogue, Tatler etc) have a reputation for being poor payers but in my experience they're a lot better than quite a few so called more mainstream clients. So, whereas Easy Living/Vogue/Glamour/Tatler at Conde Nast pay per page on usage of material - usually £100 per page, they also tend to be very generous with their expenses so you can end up making several hundred pounds for a few hours work.
The average I'd say is about £375 per diem plus expenses across most mags - some pay less, others pay significantly more.
The best payers in mag world tend to be the low rent high circulation tat mags like TV listings mags, Hello, OK! etc, though OK in particular can take anything up to 9 months to pay - however, if you get booked for a celeb wedding you will get paid something in the region of five figures.

PR stuff tends to hover around the grand a day mark and advertising is whatever you can screw the company for, which usually involves having to bribe the very poorly paid creative team (it isn't unheard of for Art Director/Copy Writer teams to be on circa £16k pa each, which is below acceptable in London IMO, so giving them a kickback from a large day rate is acceptable IMO

Interestingly Gay Dickwood and I were looking at EVE characters for sale on eBay. A char with 60ish million skill points will go for a minimum of £250, and up to 5 or £600 depending on the extras thrown in.

It would cost you more than that in subscriptions for the time taken to get 60m skillpoints though, wouldn't it?

Hmmm, lets see if I can work it out. Let's say you've got a bit of ISK to get these characters a full set of +5s, and learn skills at a tasty average of 2200 points/hour.

For 60 million it'd take.... 1136 days. Hmmm. 3 years of subscription. How much is that?

I found it pretty difficult to control, the graphics ugly, nobody seemed to be interacting with anyone else, and I just generally didn't have much clue what was going on. Maybe you need someone to show you around.

I could see the appeal of building up your resources and making or buying a property or whatever, but then I couldn't shake off the thought that the time would be better spent trying to improve my lot in real life

Start charging sensible prices for coding work. Unless your making websites of this sort of standard you shouldn't really be charging less than £1,000 for a days work.

Depends who they are really, but the golden rule is never say no, just charge yourself out of the job if you don't want to do it.
I've been asked by wealthy men to photograph their trophy g/fs or wives before and I usually charge upwards of a £1k plus expenses, which if you include Hair and Makeup and a studio can see the job rapidly escalating past the £2.5k mark. Funnily enough I don't do very much of those. And I'm not rich by any measure - my career seems to revolve around champagne and showers - i.e. I earn a lot when I work regularly but regularly don't work IYSWIM

Me and a friend brainstormed this idea once. How many times do you need to shout at your bank, but the call centre is engaged?
