Frankie has either been recycling jokes from other shows/appearances, or I've been having extreme deja vu.

I wish they'd have a larger pool of comedians to pull their panel from. It's quite tiring seeing the same people over and over. And any new people can't get a word in anyway; they're always bullied into standing at the side by the regulars who don't have the decency to let them actually make their way to the microphone.

I do still watch it, but I'm growing tired. It's becoming very predictable.

Russell Howard is the best one on it, though Frankie's jokes are often very funny. But he is just crowbarring in his regular stand-up routine, as opposed to Russell who is doing things on the fly. Russell is also far better when allowed to just ramble on in his regular stand-up, which I've seen a few times. He's probably my favourite on the circuit right now.

He once made the "Through the medium of expressive dance" joke on MTW. No one outside of GCSE Level drama makes that joke. He can sod right off, the unfunny bast.

There's a CD of stuff that didn't make it to air, which is significantly funnier than the actual programme.

I have been on the weakest link (i.e. the dutch version of it). It is one of the most traumatic stories of my life. Everyone got their first question right, and i even banked it, and got voted off, i suppose i said something becasue the persons who didn't vote for me couldn't imagine me being voted off, but still.. and then they to to me a bit in the after interview, that i insulted a secretary who was also a candidate and aired so that i insulted every secretary on the planet, which led to me haivng some explaining to do at work the next day (2 months later)

I like Dara on mock the week, and Frankie Boyle can be good. The guy with the hair has his moments, as well. To be honest though, I still think the format of the show itself needs to be fixed - too often it just feels forced and contrived, in a way that Have I Got Buzzocks All Over never did. Some of the rounds are just plain crap. And yeah, some more guests, and less competition from the regulars would help.

Hmm. The permanent members:

I like Fankie Boyle, as he's excellently rude.

Russell Howard is awesomes, and I very very much want to see him doing stand up.

Bald guy is annoying and terminally unfunny.

Hugh Dennis just uses his Now Show material, but I like the Now Show.

Regular "occasional" guests -

Ed Byrne does well, usually, as he's loud enough to get heard, and is funnier than most of the other panellists.

That black lass who always makes jokes about racism and nigerians can fuck off.

Lauren Laverne is always a bit quiet- but I've never understood why Laverne's on there, as she's not a comedian. I love her dearly, but honestly, stick to your strengths love.

David Mitchell isn't funny, and only gets laughs by saying something very politically left wing very loudly. I think the audience are still then laughing at him rather than with him.

Lucy Porter is ok, but quiet. It's not really the right venue for her, tbh.

The others are apparently entirely unmemorable.

:this:

I love whimsy used properly. Whimsy in the films of Powell & Pressburger, whimsy in Miyazaki, Stephen Fry even whimsy in Twin Peaks. In the correct proportions, its ace and oddly sweet and adds a slightly surreal, mythic, characterful tang to stuff.

Whimsy for whimsy's sake is bad. Which is why Josie Long fails inevitably, because uncoupled from anything meaningful, it's just random pointless words. Izzard actually took what would be dark and threatening situations, embarrassing situations and neat observational situations and made them funny through whimsy. But the main reason why his whimsy worked was that it was so vivid and inherently funny in imagining. Jurgen Prochnow and the Das Boot crew inside an orange defying those who would break in. Cats drilling for oil. Julius Caesar being named after small-yappy-dog-food. It's funny because of his delivery and running with things to insane logical conclusions.

Contrast that with Josie Long. Hmm.
