What films scare the crap out of you, and why?

I LOVE scary films and thriller-type things to watch as I love being scared.

These are my top scary films:

1, IT
2, Aliens
3, Descent
4, Star Wars (Darth Vader parts only-his 'breathing' has become a phobia of mine)
5, E.T.

EDIT:

6, Silent Hill! (Can't believe I forgot)

There aren't many things that really get my heart racing but these are a few of them 0_o;

EDIT: Duh, Kat! I never wrote why I was scared of them:

IT-CLOWNS! I mean they are so WRONG! I am petrified of things like that, people dressed up and dressed as animals e.t.c
Aliens-I LOVE the films, but I am a wuss and have to leave the light on after >.<
Descent-What is not scary about that?! Trapped down a frigging cave thing and you can't get out!
Star Wars-Reason above...D.V
E.T-NO! I hate it! It scares me to death and that thing it does with the finger-uuuugh! And then when he was in the river and went blueish-oh god.

Event Horizon scared the shit out of me. I can't really articulate why - perhaps it was just the idea of hell being all there is.

I don't think I've ever been scared by a film (other than to be made to jump - but then I jump even when I know something is about to make me jump). I also have never had a nightmare (I've had scary dreams, but loved them)

Ju-On scared the shit out of me.

Dark Water (Japanese version) was scary, too.

The Shining has been known to scare me in places.

Jeepers Creepers was scary right up until the reveal of the monster.

That's all I can think of right now.

I watched final destination 2 the other night. While I could happily watch all the gory deaths, I had to look away when the kid was at the dentist getting his teeth drilled (nothing gory happened then, just normal teeth drilling)

The shining was more 'odd' for me than scary-it was like having foil on a filling, not nice

Jeepers Creepers-what an ace film! It creeped me a little bit but other than that I thought it was pretty safe
J.C2 was an epic disaster but I still bought it because it made me laugh :)

1: Threads (don't watch it, Shin!)
2: Invasion of the Bodysnatchers - Sutherland 70's version
3: Don't Look Now
4: Night of the Living Dead (no longer that scary for me but I consider it to be the first horror movie I ever saw)
5: I'll put 'The Shining' for now, but I'm sure there's a scarier one.

I can no longer be afeared of Darth Vader since me and my housemate Rhys started a running joke about him being played by Louis Armstrong.

"Luke! Ah ahm yur favorrrrr - skiddle-a-bee-doo-bop! - ohhh yurrrrrr."

1 - The Ring (American) - This movie scared the crap out of me. The tv scene, the closet scene...the tape contents. The film gave me a sense of dread that no other could

2- Dark Water (japanese) - The same sort of atmosphere and scares as The Ring. The last scene is also quite disturbing

3- REC - This movie is so awesome. I love zombie movies, and this one tops them all. There are also some shock scares

4- Tale of two sisters - Very weird stuff which oozes atmosphere

5- The Shining - I saw this when i was very little and i was deeply traumatized by it. I couldn't watch another horror movie until i was 18 which when i saw this again when i wondered what was the fuss about. Good movie, but not that scary. Gets an honorable mention though.

The Shining is more disturbing than anything. Those two girls. As soon as you see them, you know they're just... wrong. The book had me in several places.
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
When Danny gets attacked by the corpse in room 217. When he's playing in the playground and goes into the concrete tunnels under the snow. The whole topiary thing... *shudders*

The first time a film really shocked me as a child was when I saw Robocop. Specifically, when they shoot fuck out of Murphy in the warehouse.

Not really a horror film by any means, but most certainly disturbing to an 8 year old!

So the whole "runny-acid-man sloshing" was okay? Cripes.

I know what you mean though, I was surprised at the extended violence of that scene on the DVD :S

IT was the first horror movie I saw that frightened me so much I locked myself in the airing cupboard and refused to come out until mum had checked the drains down the street so I could go to school the next day! I used to go and find all the scary films and sit and watch them-then I started showing my little sister (she must have been 7?) the one we always laughed at was Freddy K though! He is ace! And all the Hellraisers, we used to LOVE them!

I think maybe that's why we are immensely fucked in the head :/

EDIT: I think I was about 10 when I watched IT, Rae would have been 5 and I didn't let her watch that one

I saw An American Werewolf In London when I was about eight, hence its inclusion on my list.

'Ghostwatch' with Sarah Greene, Parkey and Craig Charles? Showed that to some housemates who were too young to see it when it was first on, I savoured the moment they all went "Bloody hell!" and started shrieking with the fast-camera-whip-round-Scary-Ghost-Pipes-in-the-bedroom bit.

The Firm, the brutally convincing Gary Oldman made-for-TV movie, not the Tom Cruise film.

You see, we're never going to be attacked by Frankenstein or Dracula, acid-blooded aliens are unlikely to use us as propagators for their young and villains like Freddie Kruger can only ever exist in movies. But all it would take to find yourself in the situations covered in The Firm is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I first watched it in the students' union bar. I ran all the way home...

I think my first horror film if you could call it that was lost boys when I was 8 or 9.

Cant believe anybody hasnt said the japanese ring yet though.

Also the japanese version of the eye has the scariest scene in any film ever.

also suprised by the amount of people saying dark water, bit creepy but I thought it was turgid myself never seen the remake though because its bound to be worse.

That's the one. I saw it again a couple of years ago, and, while impressed, the rubbish acting of the two girls made it totally non-scary.

Mm, the acting of the mum was diabolical too. Funny really, the cheesy kids TV presenters get into the swing on the naturalistic faux-documentary stylee and yet the BBC completely messes up getting decent thesps for the family. Still, wonderfully creepy when I watched it as a kid.

Then Gods yes. Everyone harped on and on about the elevator scene, but the spoilered one there caught me completely blindsided. That could possibly be the best jump-scare I've seen.

Oh, and my list. In no particular order. And missing loads that I've rubbishly forgotten about.

The Eye (original) - Yes, it meanders all over the place towards the end, but still has some great scares.
The Thing (remake) - I'm not sure how you could better this, to be honest.
Tourist Trap - A little known one, this. Typical horror teens end up off the beaten track, hounded by a psychotic and his animated mannequin 'friends'. One to add to your Cinemageddon list.
Imprint - aka Takeshi Miike's contribution to the 'Masters of Horror' series. Patchy, but some images could stay with you for a long time after.

Any film with scary little girls in. Little girls are the most terrifying things ever. The Dawn of the Dead remake springs to mind.

No, the toxic waste scene was most certainly not ok either!

Still looks pretty horrific today -

I suspect it's the crudeness of the special effects of Robocop make the trauma worse, it wouldn't be nearly so bad if it were made today with CG effects.

That was silly. Everyone knows that grinning murderous clowns hide in your airing cupboard. Haven't you heard them run their fingers down the doors at night?

The Eye elevator scene is the one I remember. Brr. I think the first obviously scary movie I saw was American Werewolf in London. I was probably scared by other things before it, but that was the first "horror" I saw (a bit too young, too, probably- 28 years of age, ladies and gentlemen, aaah.) The wake up from the dream bit. Even though it's what you'd call a cheap shock today, it worked! The Thing- that awful noise the hot metal makes on the petri dishes or whatever they were with the blood in. eeee-eeee-eeee-eeee.

More recently, Audition, for it's unrelenting awfulness when it gets going. Much, much worse than Saw or Hostel or whatever. Eeeep.

How did I forget Audition? I think that's one of the only films that's made me think of looking away from the screen.
Also, Hostel was shit.

I.AM.NOT.GOING.TO.SLEEP.TONIGHT

EDIT: My sister has just rang me at work (which is really surprising as I was just cursing her) and asked me whether I had watched The Hills have eyes 2 because she thought it was the funniest thing she'd seen in ages...

I think I may have done this to her. I won't say which bit she properly cackled on as it is a bit wrong-I laughed at this aswell

I'm not scared by many films now. Last scary film I saw was probably Silent Hill and that freaked the fuck out of me

I really don't do scary films at all well. I tend to get my thrills out of psychological horror and films with a 'sense of evil'. The bit that most impressed me in Exorcist (which left me slightly cold otherwise, sorry Mark Kermode) was when the statue of the devil appears shrouded in yellow mist in the bedroom. I thought that was superb.

'Dead of Night' is a film I love, it's an Ealing film with five spooky stories framed within one big story. Most of the stories are pretty simple and two are duffers, but there's one with Michael Redgrave as a ventriloquist. His dummy Max hates him and mocks him in front of others, but he won't be parted with it. The entire thing turns into a weird, twisted, crime of passion. Very sinister. The framing device with Mervyn Johns is the best though, and builds up to a wonderful, evil, disturbing and murderous crescendo. Flawed, but compelling.

I have a possibly false memory of being terrified of a film when I was a child. A man and a woman dressed for dinner are arguing on the landing. The terrified woman doesn't want the man to go into the room. He pushes her away and does so. In the room is a painting of a hideous skull like figure on a throne, painted with power and menace. The man throws a knife at the painting and it embeds in the creature's heart. The man falls down dead, and the creature in the painting turns into the man, and the body of the man turns into the dead form of the creature.

It all seems Dorian Gray like, but quite different. I can't decide if it is a false memory born of a dream or something actual. Brrr.

Are there any really really scary films to watch? I feel I've exhausted the one's that truly terrify me-NO clowns though, my heart won't take that anymore.

Going to Drayton Manor not this weekend but the next and they will have people dressed as animals and crap there-that will be a hard thing to try and ignore.

I remember going to Disney Land Paris and it was absolutely horrible! My estranged father decided he'd take an interest in me and Rae and took us to Paris to spend a week, we all argued and many tears were shed-the most being actually at Disney Land as Chip, out of Chip and Dale (?) (if it was the naked men I wouldn't have cried!NOM NOM) came along and was trying to hug me! Oh my freaking god I screamed so loud and ran and hid in the toilets!

I'm absolutely terrified of the film 'The Entity'. I saw it when I was a kid and it wasn't that scary but ended with some text about it being based on a true story and the attacks still continuing. I did sleep properly for weeks after that.

So I told my ex about it and she's like 'we should totally watch that' and so we did and I had to turn it off.

Nice use of the Stuart Lee approved 'ah' there. Not even an 'aaahh.' You show that we, the audience, are on the ball.

Shin! If you really want scary try... (horror contained within spoiler brackets)

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Threads - the Sheffield based nuclear apocalypse film of terrified champions, should be in your local fearful library or on a shit-scared Lovefilm or something.

You probably won't ever talk to me again afterwards though.

Threads may be scarier if you live in Thatcher's Britain with actual television adverts about the four minute warning with Frankie Goes To Hollywood holding their fingers over the buttons of atomic death.

The Omen scared the bejesus out of me... the psycho nanny character especially. The other Omen films were also moderately scary, but the first one just freaked the cocking life out of me.

I also genuinely found the Nightmare on Elm Street films scary too; they were a bit OTT, especially later ones, and Freddy is a bit camp at times, but the whole concept of a bad guy who only attacked you in your sleep was genius and terrifying in equal measures.

Ok, enough on topic nonsense from me... gogogogogog!!!

Things that get me are:

1) People carrying around something volatile that may explode with a loud noise, killing people, at any second (or anything of that ilk, such as the room in Cube where any noise sets off the needles of death).

2) A character changing sides, or revealing something horrible. Such as in 'the Ring', where: MAJOR SPOILER!

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
They rescue the dead girl's body to 'set her free', then go back and tell the kid. He just looks at her and says something like, "No... you didn't help her, did you?

Christ, I've got chills just thinking about the look on the kid's face as he says it.

For the most part I'm okay though.

Exorcist

Most. Overrated. Film. Ever.

I went on about this in one of the bits and bobs threads... I shall hunt out my thoughts. Ah-ha! Insightful film critiquery ahoy:

As has been noted before, 50s throwback Kockface Kermode has no taste, and is a cunt. I can only assume that all of that pomade has seeped through the pores in his scalp and damaged his brain and caused some sort of oily tumour on his tastelobe.

Basically, I thought the Exorcist was the least frightening film ever. I want fisticuffs* with Kermode, as I watched it solely due to him banging on about how it's the greatest film ever.

In retrospect, I should have known how wrong he is about everything when he dissed Pirates of the Caribbean 2.

I'm a lapsed catholic, so I was at least open to the religious aspects of the Exorcist, which should, by rights, have made it dead scary. It was just silly though. Especially that daft "spider-walking" nonsense.

Honestly - even if a kid is actually posessed, you don't have to go in the room that the kid's tied up in. Ergo, it can't do anything to hurt you. Ergo, nothing to be scared of. Just send the fucking priest in there and go and have a sandwich.

*By which I mean a strongly worded exchange of correspondence, preferably on the letters pages of the Times.

You mean the Tom Cruise John Grisham adaptation?
