This racing car thing I want to build: I've wanted one for about ten years. I've been to see the chap, and everything I want can be done. I've talked to my old man, and I've got space in his workshop for as long as I want it. My Range Rover (the base for the racing car) is running perfectly.
All I need to do is email the chap to say "Yeah, let's do it" and he can start getting the parts for me. I could have done that a week ago.

So. Why won't I send the email?

What's your wife's opinion of the project?

Write the email, and have it sit in your pending box. After a week or so, you might feel tempted to click 'send', or delete it.

I think you're unsure about committing time and money to project. What would you be giving up in order to do it?

There could be any number of reasons and regardless of the fact that everybody makes out you're richer than Croysus, I suspect the reality is slightly more realistic. So, is it the dreaded fear of money and feature creep?

Or is it a more irrational feeling that you might not get the use out of something this hardcore - there's always an element of needing to use specialist equipment to justify owning it or you become another twat with all the gear. What I'm saying is that you're effectively building a Dakar spec race vehicle that you will use when? Every weekend, every other weekend, once a month, once in a blue moon, a lot initially then you'll sell it because it feels silly owning something this hardcore and not using it?

I mean, you do live in London, and short of parking outside Ken Livingstone's house at 2am and revving the nuts off it, there's limited fun to be had with something like that.

There's also the psychological vacancy that achieving a long held desire can create. What do you fill that space/need with - was it about owning a vehicle or the drive to want to own one?

Track down the TG website and see if there's a report on the Landie that Richard Hammond had customised - sounds completely over the top and it ended up costing him something in the region of 80k

I say //cue movie trailer voice "do it and be damned" :D

Buster? LRM and Devon 4x4 (I think) did that for him for free, the cheeky git.

The rest of your post is maybe closer to the truth. The money isn't an issue, because I've been saving for this for ages. It's more the time drain and the point about "being the guy with all the gear".

I'm not planning to stay in London for ever (and if I do, the closest off-road site is only 20 miles away from my house), and I think I'll get good use out of it.

I've sent the it now (it was Ace's fault), so we'll see, I guess.

You could have a LOT of fun operating as a minicab driver with that. Saturday night, Centre Point. "Course I go south of the river love, there's a good ramp I know. Buckle up"

Just think of the speed you could pick up going down the steps between Pall Mall and The Mall, straight across the Park, through Parliament Square, over the anti tank emplacements at HoP and build a ramp there. How fast would you need to go to clear the river?

Sure? With that V8 powering that skinny little chassis? OK, so you can chooose to go through rather than over, but it's always nice to have options.

Also: Watching nice ladies who have just got out of the club clambering into the thing with skirts on would be joyful. Doors are for losers.

Stick those silly tyres the Icelandic hill climbers use and you could go across the water. Going through the water isn't an option though, as it's a RR host chassis, not a Lotus and any fule know only Lotus make underwater cars!

Because it looks utterly utterly utterly gay.

You may as well paint your Jeep pink and cruise the streets of Brighton looking for bum action.

Just my 2p.

Coz if it goes wrong then that's ten years of dreams out of the window, leaving you nothing but a barren husk of a man.

I was expecting a Rinspeed at least, but it ain't a Lotus Esprit, is it. You can smoke in that and keep your Safari suit dry ;)

I would look at that but even though I'm incapacitated in bed and everything I can't bother waiting for it to load
