I'm finally getting paid tomorrow, yippee! However, my payslip says I'm not paying any tax. Now, I'm not au fait with paying tax on a salary, as I've always been paid for the hours wot I do. I have a taxcode, and am paying NI on it. This is my first pay from my new job. I only got my payslip today.

I assume that being in a government job, they'll be pretty shit hot at taxation, and I shouldn't worry, but does anyone know why I'm not paying tax at the moment? I really just want to know in case I get nailed with double the amount next month or something.

((see, it's nothing to do with Bits'n'Bobs. Who the hell is going to click on a thread called 'Taxation: Burning Issues' anyway?))

I assume the amount you'll be paid if you extrapolate your pay forward to next March is enough to pass the tax threshold?

What's the tax code on your payslip, if you don't mind me asking?

It's a combination of letters and numbers that tells your employer how much tax they should be taking out of your wages each month. Thought you would know that. :S

Which means you should get £5790 a year before you're taxed anything. I take it you've been working all of this year so far? I'd query this with your HR dept (or whoever deals with payroll). It'll only bite you in the arse if you don't.

Yup, this happens far more than it should when people move jobs. The payroll staff of your new employers just assume that you havent earned anything in the current tax year and decide to give you the full tax allowance instead of prorataing it.

I'd do what Myoptika said otherwise you'll more than likely get shafted.

I haven't been working this year, at all. Until now, of course.

So I should have about 4700 of that allowance left(Benefits count as taxable income).. But it seems a little sucky if they're not going to pro-rata it out. great for the first 4 or so months, not so great for the rest of the year.

It often takes employers a month or two after you start to bother pro-rating your allowanced properly. It's usually because they never bother sorting it all out until after you start working there.

So, if they sort it out in a month or so's time, you shouldn't see any kind of shaftage occur. I'd still check that they are going to sort it, just to be sure.

Ramsea: I didn't think you three-legged twats paid any tax?!

haha, may be this should be in the "reasons to move to an island" thread. Yes unfortunately we do pay tax but it is at a lower rate than your govt. rips you off with and we get an annual allowance of over £8.5k :)

I dont know how you guys can look at your payslip at the end of the month and not kill anyone....oh wait, Comical Gnomes...

Well least you have a fantastic public transport system and health service to show for your hard earned cash...

Pundy without delving into your personal stuff too much, if youre not gonna earn more than £4700 before the end of the tax year then it is correct that you shouldnt pay any tax. But, to be on the safe side, Id get them to prorata it to make sure youre paying the right amount of tax come the next tax year. Obviously any tax you over pay this year will be refunded to you.

ooooh get you, handbags at 10 paces.

We have just had our line upgraded from 2Mb to 8Mb which although probably not as fast as some of your lines, it is fairly solid and should hopefully help us having both Xboxs online at the same time :p

Haha, funnily enough I have family in Douglas. If I ever go over and visit them we should go out for a drink (you're allowed to drink over there, right?).

All we do over here is drink...we're not described at 80,000 alcoholics clinging to a rock for nothing.

On closer inspection, these are loafers...

My plan: chill until my fancy-schmancy on-line payslip appears next month, if I'm still not paying tax, kic... politely inquire.

I don't mind anyone knowing what money I make. I think in this country we screw ourselves over because we're squeamish about talking about wages. 14,700pa, by the way.

Oh, I bought Army of Poo today...
