Fixing printers is, by and large, a piece of piss. Sadly in my line of work we do a lot of installs of brand spanky new printers in offices, and some of these offices contain people who don't like having brand spanky new printers because the 10 year old piece of shit that jams every 3 pages, prints at about 5ppm if it prints at all and leaks toner over everything is "what they're used to". It's not unusual in these offices to get calls that the new device we've put in jams all the time, only to get there and find some part of the paper feed mechanism has been mysteriously snapped off. And when we replace that part, two weeks later more jams occur because a different part has snapped. Who thought simple pieces of paper could be so violent, eh?

I sit in the great railway ivory tower, watching people outside my monkeysphere suffer huge delays getting to/from work. I then move some numbers (that represent them) together with some other numbers (that represent the amount of inconvenience they've suffered) around a bit.

Do you actually control their suffering by doing that? That would be one of the best jobs ever.

Sadly, no. That's the controller's* decision, the nearest I come is calling signallers up and punching into the computer that a train will be failing to call at several stops to make up some time. The whole thing is a stupendous example of the monkeysphere at work though: half a dozen people sitting in a room, making decisions that affect thousands of commuters.

I was down in Exmouth the other day, whatching the fisherymen go out in their boats onto a nice calm sea on a lovely sunny day, thinking that looks really good. It may be a bit worse during winter.

On the "trawlermen" show on BBC1 last night (a sort of low-rent, more sedate version of "deadliest Catch"), one of the fishermen got swept overboard and died. It's a risky business.

You have to be fat and clean shaven. A plummy voice helps, I think.
