I think, in troubled times such as these, we have to turn to our ancestors and wise sayings they passed down to us. I think the following one is particularly apposite in this situation:

"A cat always lands on its bloodied paw stumps"

Untrue. You don't need a brain to stand

So how come amoebae can't stand? Hmmm?

I realised a moment ago that I, too, use a town hall clock to tell the time at work as I can see it from my desk. So, it isn't that weird.

Moving away from Jim Stirling, I have recently started listening to back episodes of 'The Listening Service'. It's currently being repeated on Sunday evenings on the Third but I've downloaded the whole back catalogue from Itunes. Each episode looks at a different feature of music or a particular composer in a very accessible and engaging way. I particularly liked the one on the Mozart myth.

If you like really surreal stuff Welcome to Night Vale is a good listen.

Really surreal. Like
"The City Council announces the opening of a new dog park at the corner of Earl and Sommerset, near the Ralph’s. They would like to remind everyone that dogs are not allowed in the dog park. People are not allowed in the dog park. It is possible that you will see hooded figures in the dog park. DO NOT APPROACH THEM. DO NOT APPROACH THE DOG PARK. The fence is electrified and highly dangerous. Try not to look at the dog park, and, especially, do not look for any period of time at the hooded figures. The dog park will not harm you."
and
"It’s not my place to say, I know. My place is hiding behind the boring button-up shirts in your closet, my thin, gnarled fingers almost brushing your hand each time you reach for one of those milquetoast frocks on your way to another unsuccessful night trying to find someone who will make you more than you are."

Night Vale is good but there's a lot of it, and it started to feel quite samey after a while.

Alice Isn't Dead is by one of the two writers and is much more to the point with a definite Steven King vibe to it.

Nope, I share your ambivalence.

I listened to the first episode and found the constant smart-arsery a bit infuriating.

"Hold up"
"I'm sorry, WHAT"
"Woah woah woah, he did what?!"
"Time out, time out."
"Rewind, please, rewind"
"Stop right there"

There are things that certainly need calling out in the book, and that is presumably the point of the podcast, but the constant telegraphing of it with the above signifiers in a "Watch out, I have a funny coming" kind of way, got on my tits.

Listened to the final episode of MDWaP series two on the way in today. Working in Banbury today so was on the train, and probably disturbed the peace of the quiet carriage by my continual sniggering.

Highlight:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The ranch crew having cocks like concrete pillars

One or two episodes this series were a bit weak but on the whole it's just as funny and gross as the original. The Amsterdam episodes were the best, methinks.

Fans of the End Times might want to listen to Radio 3's recent 'Sunday Feature' on the Apocalypse. It's a look at views on the last days from different cultures, traditions, and time periods from the Romans to the present day Zombigeddon.

Afterwards, if you want more of the devil, Tom Service's 'Listening Service' on what makes a virtuoso is good fun, especially his discussion of what makes Van Halen great.

This week's 'Listening Service' on Beethoven's 9th is brilliant and worth listening to if you've ever heard the symphony. Mr Service discusses both the structure of the piece and how it's been used and abused over time.

I remember it took me years before I finally started to understand and enjoy the symphony, rather than spend forty-five minutes waiting for 'Ode to Joy' to start. I hadn't picked up on the farting bassoons however, but since listening to this podcast I might find myself distracted by them when I next hear it.

Just listened to another superb episode of the Listening Service. In a probably unintentional :attitude:-throwback for Beex's 9th birthday week, this one is on short songs. Over 20 pieces are played in full, from across the centuries and genres. I've saved this one to my Ipod so I can listen to them again and try to catch everything that's going on. Well worth half an hour of your time.

As we're posting radio shows, Australian comedian Sarah Kendall has a three part thing up on the iPlayer at the moment that's not only fucking hilarious but also just really well done and touching story telling. I'd never heard much of her before, aside from the odd appearance on The Now Show I think, but this is really good stuff.

One of those was comedy of the week, I think - and excellent, so thanks for letting me know there were more.

I've just added 'two dope girls' to my list. Seems a bit 'you go, girl!' hypey at the start, but there's some good laughs in there.

Listened to the first three of this week's late night essays on the Third just now, entitled 'Hanging on'. It's a cosy, comfortable dose of nostalgia for out-dated things that are still around today (eg boating ponds; ventriloquis; landline telephones). Yes, it's the audio equivalent of an advert for Werther's Originals or Hovis, but charming nonetheless.
