I've wondered that. Carphibes serm to amplify outside of a car far more than any other sounds from within.

The last time someone had a car phone was 1986. Do you mean with the windows open, or something?

They mean a bluetooth connection to the stereo or something, and they tend to run loud.

It's quite a simple test - start your car, play the podcast at a normal level, then get out and shut the door and listen.

I can often hear the muffled ringing sound of someone on their car speaker making a call and then when they pick up the voice on the speaker is so loud. Multiple cars on multiple occasions.

Your environment ambient noise may be higher though.

Does my car act as a faraday cage so my tiny FM transmitter with a range of around five metres (I tested this at home) can't be picked up if someone is twirling the knob when next to me in a traffic jam? Otherwise people might have got the odd blast of accidental porno.

I find I need to have the phone up a bit louder than normal to get clear speech in the car, plus when you only have midrange frequencies from voice instead of music it will sound clearer through the bodywork of the car.

And of course if I have the sunroof open it leaves little to the imagination.

People often park up outside where we live to take business calls, or take calls on the phone whilst waiting to Coke t someone. As Russell said, the phone ringing is faint, but the person speaking is as loud and clear as if they are standing in my room, speaking very loudly

I am not going to acoustics of a chap that lies on hand grenades.

I know the cars are designed to stop noise from the engine, but how can sound be stopped escaping though thin metal (speakers in the door) and single pane glass?

There was a lady parked outside the office the other day having a full on phone barney with her partner. The car windows were shut but it was amazingly loud, so she was broadcasting it to the entire building because it was a hot day and all the office windows were open. It was brilliant.

It's incredibly rare for your car to have bare metal to the outside - virtually every bit of it is covered in sound insulation:

Think about how loud a truck going by is when you're stood on the pavement, compared to how load it is when you overtake one on a motorway.

Or just get out of your car with the radio on, as suggested earlier.

That was a really strange chapter, although I don't tend to go to riding outfitters. I liked Adaam though. More please.

For reasons I don't quite understand, I kept on imagining Grigor, the Russian pimp, as looking like a cross between Tim Farron and John Sim's portrayal of the Master. I've not got a clear image of Belinda yet.

Right, now get one of us to talk on our phones outside your car while you're in the boot.

Took me a moment to figure out what you were on about. I was still thinking of boot as booty, or rather a cats arse. I was wondering if you had a problem with a guy raiding* cats arse.

* apparently, fraudulent becomes guy raiding on SwiftKey.

No, but the context of the word boot in relation to a car is somewhat different from that of a foot.

So cats have no paws then, what with a paw being defined as a foot...

Just to check... Where do you think the safest place to be in the vicinity of a grenade?

You know cats have paws.. you are just looking more foolish now :)

No one describes paws as feet. Paws and the fuzzy thing that allows the cat to stand etc

Generally, a 'paw' is the type of foot that we are accustomed to see on dogs and cats. ... Many bigger animals have hooves (e.g. horses, cows) and some just have 'feet' (e.g. elephants). I would say 'feet' for dinosaurs -- some had feet like elephants and some had feet like birds
