Two months old she estimates. Or thereabouts. Any ideas what to do? To keep it safe and healthy, because it's only little. Small creatures much be protected from harm.

(I have to add that's she is in rural Ireland at the moment, and we only have phone contact. I don't have a photo of the kitten because it'd take too long to upload one via the 3rd world dial up connection over there.)

The logical answer here is to first get in touch with a veterinarian so that they can check it over and make sure it's not carrying any infectious diseases that could be carried to humans.

And then to the RSPCA? And/or local cat shelter, the nice kind that don't hurt cute lil' kittens.

*Frowns at Gaz*

First up, find a box to pop it in as you don't want it mooching off again, water NOT milk! Gives them a bad belly, only cat milk should be given to kittens, if there's a shop near get the Mrs to get some. Is it thin? Can she feel it's ribs through the fur if she rubs it down, if not then it's probably gone for a meander-do you know where she found it? Other than that just bundle it up within the box to keep it warm and safe then call the vet

Vets have a programme that reports any missing pets in the area aswell so they'll be able to see if a kitty matching it's description is missing

If I was closer I'd have it *loves kitties*

Post subject:  Re: My girlfriend's found a kitten...

If she decides to keep it overnight if it looks in a good condition before taking it to a vet/wherever else is open then it feeds every few hours or so, cat milk, try and stay off solid stuff if it is only 2 months, plus you won't be sure when it's last been fed and too much solid food may make it poorly :( Like a human baby-obv. not with the cat milk. It'll be sad that it's been wandering around...I want it! :'( I'd cuddle it

Cats are so much nicer than humans.

Well it's logical. If a cat doesn't like you it'll fuck off and go elsewhere-they aren't two-faced like people or emotionally shallow like dogs. You really have to work a cat to get it to love you, thankfully my 3 are probably the most well behaved and nicest cats :) *cuddles*

OK, I think the vet option might be do-able, as she has been left some money and a phone number just in case. It's a bit limiting as she's in the middle of nowhere, in a different country. It's as rural as it gets out there apparently.

One of the most traumatic moments in my life was when a friend told me to cuddle a kitten in the MUD Metaverse which resulted in a graphic description of the character smothering the life out of the poor thing. I know it was a virtual kitten and all that but it totally fucked me up for ages. I love cats so much.. I find it hard to pass one in the street.. I must stop and say hello. And for a third and final question, how is "Cats are so much nicer than humans" tautology? Is the implication meant to be that everything is nicer than humans? (no, that's not a 4th question, it's more of a question 3[b]).

hehe, no I've been looking out for a kitten for a while, but I wont buy one from a shop. I often hear of people having unwanted kittens but previously I've not been in a position to have one, so I'm waiting until then, rather than encouraging shops to sell them.

Pet shops, unless they specialise in a particular animal, generally mistreat their stock as they just don't have the time or inclination to look after them properly.

It is for this reason that, when I eventually get around to buying my pet tarantula(s), I will be buying from an online stockist that deals solely in eight-legged freaks, rather than the local pet shop which probably fails to understand the nuances of caring for a hairy arachnid beastie.

It seems so isolated out there (checking on Google Earth) that the kitten might well have not had any human contact before. It might well be the offspring of wild domesticated cats! Perhaps. The poor creature can't back here though due to quarantine laws. And the whole allergy aspect.

I'd be so upset if I was allergic to cats.

Pet shops people aren't my fave people. Had hamsters from Pets at Home and they were older than they said and the one was very sick, he didn't last long. PLUS they tried to sell a lop ear with mange or something....uh....no! People should have to go through immense training or something to look after pets!

Personally I'd always plump for getting an adult cat over a kitten. They're less trouble, you can tell what they're going to be like in three years, and they're far more often left to sit in a shelter for their whole lives because they don't look as cute.

There's also far less chance that they'll turn out to have loads of serious and expensive medical problems, because they'll have mostly manifested themselves earlier Plus I like having pets that can take care of themselves if necessary.

If I ever get a cat it will be from a the rescue home, or somewhere similar. I don't even mind if it's an old one because I'll still get a few years of friendship from it, and it'll be able to live out its life happily.

Post subject:  Re: My girlfriend's found a kitten...

My girlfriend comes from rural Ireland and finds kittens every time she goes back there. It's apparently a prime dumping area for cats and dogs so there's always strays wandering about, and kittens emanate from the tumbledown farm buildings all the time.

Two years ago we drove across, and she found a very tiny black kitten behind the back door of her parents' house, reckon the mother cat had decided it wasn't going to survive and carried it there. Thing seemed half dead but we gave it little bits of food and stuff and it started staggering about and meowing. When we were due to go back it was a bit stronger so my gf insisted on taking it with us.

We were the only car to be stopped coming off the ferry (this was my very old, extremely battered estate car at the time). The customs people had a poke about and asked where we were going and so on, and miraculously the kitten hid under the passenger seat and stayed quiet.

For some bizarre reason we then decided to continue with our original plan instead of driving straight back home, which was to visit a couple of places in Wales, including camping in fields, loading the car up to the roof with solar panels, and breaking down and having to scavenge parts to go again. So we did that, letting the kitten out to run about occasionally, and it was happy enough.

The kitten turned into a mostly blind and somewhat daft cat which claws at you until you give her toast with peanut butter and marmite, but I'm glad we rescued it anyway.

Post subject:  Re: My girlfriend's found a kitten...

Hmm, there's going to have to be some mighty fine posting today to top Kalmar's tale there. It's pretty much got everything I look for in an internet post.

I'm allergic to cats. This is heartbreaking, as I love them so. From the age of ten through to the start of university I had a pretty much permanent cold. And my mum and dad had a cat. I'd head off to uni, the cold would dry up, come back for the hols and the cold would be back again. A few years later the cat died, and the cold got better but never fully went away.

Now living down in Cardiff in a catless house things are better. However, my two colleagues behind the music desk are both multi-cat owners (insert stereotypical librarian=spinster joke here) and thusly I tend to sneeze a little now and again still. Also, I went to a houseparty last week at a friend's, and she has an adorable kitten called Aisha. I played with the kitty and started sneezing badly. Still, somehow worth it.

My cat was called Jaffa. He was a fat cat, and lazy, and not terribly affectionate, but I loved him. He became affectionate towards the end in his final months though. :'(

I prefer kittens over cats, this is nothing to do with the 'cute factor,' I prefer it because then I've had them from the start and they are used to me, my ways and also you get to build a wonderful bond from the beginning...

With older cats it's harder as they are set in their ways. You can't teach an old cat tricks ;)

So glad we came over in the 'famine' then, I couldn't stand living in Ireland if that's going on, I'd have loads of cats 0_0; this is actually my dream, but not until I'm 60, childless and partnerless :)

Pete-They get mellow bless them, my mother recently had to put down my old family cat Kitiara (Kit Kat! That was me and her, hehe) because she had a brain tumour-one of the saddest days of my life that was. Sadly I only heard on the phone as I wanted to be there.

She was a nasty-ass cat if you crossed her, but she became like another cat when she was near the end bless her, so friendly mum said

It can be handy to have a cat from being a kitten but the best cats are those that choose to come and live with you as you know for sure they're compatible. It took a long long time for my cat, Lamia, to get used to living with us. For the first few days she hid under a bed and wouldn't come out. Now we quite often wish she would go and hide under the bed for a few days and leave us alone..

however, most cats seem to be of the sharp, unpredictable variety. less cute, more re-decorate-your-home-y-and-scratch-you-about-the-face-y.

I had the Bombay and the British blue together so they get on like sisters :) it's lovely...then little Bandit came along! I went out with Jo to see some kittens that she wanted to take a look at, I reported the woman after being there as she'd got 7 dogs and 14 cats (not counting kittens) in a fucking BUNGALOW and never let them out!

Jo looked at me and I sort of went to shake my head, indicating that this was not the place she should be getting kittens from as the mother cat appeared to have been bred and bred and bred for money off the kittens as her tummy was 'loose,' I nearly popped the bitch there and then! But Jo was adamant she wanted to save one, so I had a look at the kittens and chose a girl for her as she didn't want a boy (they smell more...kinda like human boys :p nyaaah) so she took her under my suggestion of a British Blue (they are the 'bull dogs' of the cat world, very sturdy, hardly any illness) and we went to pay the wench...then...a tiny 'mew' from near the litterbox came...this little runt of the litter appeared, his eyes were practically shut and was the smallest kitten I have EVER seen-and I've seen plenty. I went over and let him sniff me, then picked him up...I was in love. The old bitch said, 'Oh he's the runt of a litter than no-one else seemed to want...he doesn't get enough food really as he can't fight off the older one's..'

[INSERT SCARY ANIME-STLYE LARGE HEAD] 'IT'S YOUR JOB AS A HOUSE CAT OWNER TO TREAT ALL THE CATS THE SAME, IN THE WILD THIS IS ACCEPTABLE-BUT NOT IN YOUR CARE!!!' Needless to say I took the kitten home with me ^.^ and thus Bandy-cat is with me now, he cost me 150.00 to 'fix up' as he had a poorly leg, fleas, mites, lice (cats can get these) malnutrition, conjunctivitus (hence his eyes seeming closed-he was as old as the others and hadn't been able to see for weeks!) I tell you what, if I had of been on my own I would have killed that bitch, seriously.

I mean....cats are not social creatures by nature and tend to want their own space, which is why it's important if you have more than 2 to give them their own 'areas' like on top of wardrobes they LOVE to go up there and chill from the other cats. Especially if you have an annoying shit like Bandit wanting to play 24/7! Poor Momo hehe

EDIT: Not all cats are evil scratchy ones. For instance (and Gaz will agree) mine NEVER scratch or BITE people, they are the friendliest cats ever!

I recommend a Britsh Blue or a Black and White shorthair. Siamese are quite evil and scratch a HELL of a lot so stay away from those if you want a 'cuddly' kitty :)

Oh, here's a picture of him when he was cleaned up by the vet. Note his eyes don't look to healthy, he's a completely different cat now (see picture added earlier)

He's such a good little boy :)

Except we thought he was a girl because he was that small you couldn't tell (in stature...not in that *area*) and called him 'Panda' for a bit until the vet said, 'Katania...he's more like a George...get me?'

So he's Bandit now ^.^;

Post subject:  Re: My girlfriend's found a kitten...

Siamese are awesome cats but I know people who won't let them out for fear of them being stolen, which is no way for a cat to live.

Our cats are ace, just bog standard short haired things, one black and one black and white. They're brother and sister and they have never bitten or scratched anyone apart from each other sometimes. They pretty much give each other lots of space but at the same time if either hears the other in any kind of distress like fighting with another cat they move in faster than I've ever seen cats move. And when the girl went missing for a couple of days her brother was either out looking or wouldn't take his eyes off the cat flap. He looked visibly crestfallen the whole time and then seemed to make a show of being completely uninterested when she turned up again. Cats are magnificent creatures.
