Ok, I've worked in IT for the last four years but I have no formal qualifications at all. I used to support Linux and Windows web servers, but have found myself now supporting Windows tablet computers in a 2nd line capacity (I've kind of fallen into the role a bit by accident).

I've been given carte blanche by my new manager to go on any courses and get any formal qualifications I want, which is very nice of him. What do you suggest I do? I want something that will assist me in my role but also look good on my CV.

Any suggestions?

PASCAL.

But seriously, the Networking MSC is worth a bunch of cash in the job market, if you're into networks at all.

That's great, but I can't really justify that as I don't do any networking stuff in my role. It's pretty much just desktoppy stuff like Active Directory, SMS, RIS, RSA, etc...

Obviously pay attention to the jobs market but as you have the luxury of choice also try and choose something you're both interested in and will be good at. I'm about to become a Sharepoint developer, for my sins. >:|

We'll probably be getting our usual company in to help with setting the thing up so Services I would imagine, at least I hope so although I can imagine it will end up being a bit of both. This is new news to me though so I've only just installed it on a test server and started messing around. Not even looked at courses yet.

I was thinking more along the lines of MCSE/A, but better as everyone seems to slag them off.

MCSE is fine. It won't tell anyone you're ace, but the material's all worth knowing and having it means that you'll pass a lot of standard 'does he have an MCSE' checks. Don't do the MCSA.

The weird thing is that I looked at the MCSA and thought it was more relevant to what I do - is it a bag of shit?

It's basically "I don't understand any of this stuff really, but I'll stand over your shoulder and suck my teeth before deciding to rebuild your machine because it's all I know how to do".

Well you don't necessarily need to choose either right now do you? They're module based and many of the modules are common to both.

I'm sure those are the jobs my school's "JOB-O-MATIC" spat at at me (and pretty much everyone else)
