It's called 'Wrangham' by Claire M Singer. Not someone I've heard of before but I'm definitely going to have to investigate her work further. As with all new things, I'm never going to be able to recapture today's sensations and wonderment again, alas, but further listening will hopefully uncover more of its secrets.

Playlist link

Listening to the album now. If you like this sort of moody soundscape style music you'll probably like James Blackshaw.

Wrangham itself reminds me very much of a stripped back Storm by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Just finishing up listening to Wednesday's 'Late Junction' (the joys of working from home), and I'm genuinely impressed by it. Other than the 'Monster Mash' there was nothing I had head before, and the vast majority of stuff played was so far away from what I'd normally listen to it's very unlikely I'd have ever stumbled into any of it. This show contained electric folk, Caribbean music, Polish techno-death, and strange mystical woodwinds. Eclectic, weird, and varied sounds, but all captivating. Can't believe that this show's been running for about half my life and I've never tried it before. Definitely going to listen to more from now on.

My pleasure.

I don’t know if it’s pre-recorded now, but when I first started listening it was live and I’d mail Fiona or Verity about what they were playing and they’d often reply on air, or even email me back if it wasn’t something they wanted to discuss openly (nothing ‘not safe for listeners’ just things like discussions about artists, suggestions for other stuff to play, etc.). It had a lovely personal feel about it.

One drawback was that the Beeb kept messing about with the schedule and either starting it later because of a previous programme over run, or replacing it on some nights with some other programme. Regular fans were often up in arms about that. I haven’t listened regularly for a while now, so I don’t know if that still happens.

No one?

Fine, have some videos in your eyeballs.

Need some convincing to listen? Ok, well, he’s a rapper but funny like The Lonely Island but with respekt causes he’s a proper rapper.

A funny one that put him on the map.

A great concept song with SNOOP DOGG.

Another concept track where him and Chris Brown swap bodies. Chris Brown is excellent even though he’s the scum of the earth.

FFS, why have I never heard of Becca Stevens before? The best I can explain how I feel about her is like discovering a present day Joni Mitchell. The whole album is a revelation and there’s a back catalogue of three other albums to discover.

Loving Duff Mackagan's Tenderness LP. Really good, Dylanesque at times.

Is that the original Dylan, or the one who traitorously went electric? Not that I am bothered either way, he never really floated my boat.

Right. You know Steve Davis, from out of snooker? The snooker man? He's in a psychedelic krautrock band with members of Coil and Cardiacs.

And they're really, really good. Proggy kosmische synth madness.

Not really. Like 90% of the time or more that I am browsing Beex I don’t want to actually play music, or go on Spotify. It doesn’t seem crazy to think to mention it.

Why would you need to know the band's name, then? Absurd.

(for the avoidance of doubt, snooker's Steve Davis is NOT a member of notorious NSBM band Absurd, though that would be very funny.)

What a strange way to hold a conversation.

A: Steve Davis from the snooker is in a new band; I’ve sent you a link, give them a listen!
B: Sure, just not right now. What are they called?
A: I’m not telling you. You obviously don’t want to know.
B: I do want to know, I just don’t want to check them out right now.
A: No, you do not want to know this or you would have checked out the link I already sent you.

Madness.

Bruv, if you had asked, I'd have cheerfully told you. I mean, the most important piece of information there is that Steve Davis is in a band with someone from Coil, c'mon.

Either you'll process that information—Coil? The lads that done the soundtrack to the Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex and the How To Destroy Angels thing with Marc Almond? That Coil?—and make at the very least a mental bookmark to have a look later, or you'll blankly pass over it with no regard for snooker, early industrial, or krautrock.

Besides, not putting the name in that post gives it an air of mystery, yeah? You can enjoy the thrill of discovering the name for yourself, savour it. Maybe pretend you're a wild journo for The Quietus or something.

If we were having a conversation, I’d agree, but you would have found out quicker and caused others less effort If you’d just clicked the link than to ask and then wait for a response. It’s just sad how lazy people have become.

That’s not what happened, though. It was:

A: Steve Davis from the snooker is in a new band; I’ve sent you a link, give them a listen!
B: They’re called _______ by the way
C: People could just click the link
D: But why should they? What if they don’t want to click the link
