Buying a car is a right pain... I don't know how Hearthly puts up with this so often!

The one we had our heart set on was sold to someone else yesterday so we're back to square one. The sales people seemed less than interested in suggesting anything else so we left.

What was odd at jaguar land rover was that there was a really friendly guy on the jaguar side, couldn't do enough to help us out and wanted to do test drives there and then, even though we were quite up front that 'we need to buy at least one car but we don't know what yet, might fancy a Jag or disco but never sat in one,'.

Later we wandered over to the land rover side of the showroom and got the feeling we'd have to physically try and drive off in one to get someone to recognise our existence. I mean I like to be given time and space in shops but that was just weird.

So yesterday we saw a Ford Kuga which was a nice car and ticked a lot of boxes but had a problem in that once we put our booster seats in for this kids, it was really difficult to attach the seat belt. The plastic clip bit is recessed in the seat so it wasn't sticking out enough to easily clip together.

Bit of a deal breaker that.. The guy selling the car said you can get seat belt extenders and showed me some ebay listings of them but I'm not keen on this at all. I don't think they'll be safe.

Looks like we're back to the drawing board.

It's fun, the sense of expectation is like that tingly feeling when you know you're going to get to sleep with a lass for the first time.

Probably less so with the Leon though, come to think about it.

Holy crap that car is incredibly competent at everything it does but oh so dull. To try and inject some flavour into the ownership experience I've decided to set myself a goal of achieving the best long term MPG possible, currently at 49.0mpg after 1500 miles, and slowly climbing.

I reckon I'll be able to tip it over 50mpg long term, you can change into 6th gear at like, 1200-1300rpm in 5th. (As long as you're not going uphill.)

I'd recommend you give a Leon a try Vision, if you want a magnificently capable and well built car, that's comfortable and easy to drive, great for the family, nicely loaded with all the kit, and essentially a 'de-badged' VW/Audi for a lot less cash, along with low insurance, tax and fuel costs - it ticks all the boxes, just don't expect a stirring in your loins when you clamber aboard. (If you get the 184bbhp 2.0 litre turbo diesel engined variant, they're moderately peppy as well.)

I had a similar experience at a Mini dealership - I was quite open about not having decided what I wanted and still got given the keys with "bring it back before we close". It worked, though not for that dealer as I ended up buying one.

Wandered past the place I bought the Leon from because a couple of cars have appeared on my Faceballs feed that I rather like the look of. They were in the showroom so I walked in and got chatting to the chap I bought the Leon from, and asked him what the Leon would be worth on trade in. He tapped away on his computer and said he'd give me full retail for it rather than trade value, as long as I was getting something more expensive, as he wouldn't expect me to take trade since I've only had the Leon a couple of months.

So in simple terms he'll give me £17800 for the Leon, which is £17800 towards anything I fancy.

They've still got the red Golf R I posted pics of a few pages back, and also this monster. It's had a few 'things' done to it and has been dyno-ed at 353bhp....

He said I could take it out for a spin but I declined as didn't have much time. Also, I don't fully trust myself not to do something stupid like buy the bloody thing.

Or, how about another Merc, surely this'd be better than the last one?

Yes I had a look inside, I'm not entirely sold on the blue lights.

The previous owner has done quite a few mods to it, not all of which I agree with. The head unit he's put in is good though.

As myp notes, it's just a variation on the Type-R really, and a 3-door one at that.

I might take that Merc out, it looks nice when you're stood next to it and the interior was lovely.

My nephew has a white Mk2 Focus RS. He loves it, but then he is 25, so I'd expect him to. He keeps nagging me to buy a newer hot hatch, but I keep reminding him I live in central London with it's heavily congested roads, speed bumps everywhere and width restrictions and blanket 20mph limit everywhere other than A roads, so I don't see the point in having anything fast and hard riding.

A mere £1200. (He gave me £20K for the Type-R, and the Leon was £19K, so I got the Leon and a cheque for £1000. Hence at £17,800 I've lost £1200. Do be aware that's retail though, it's a lot less than that at trade.......)

Shrouds don't have pockets, and all that.

I'm increasingly liking the look of that Merc, it will be the company's chance to redeem themselves after the fucking horror show that was the CLS 320.

I think I'll take it out for a spin tomorrow.

Oh man, that's a conundrum old boy - that RS Focus is hard to resist....
You know it's going to have all the integrity and build quality of a novelty cracker toy, and screwed together about as well as a poverty-spec BEKO self-combusting household appliance. Compared to the Type-R you recently dumped it's likely a travesty, and manages to make even that car seem dead classy by comparison - but...but.. it looks good in white doesn't it, and you just know it's going to shift like a torque-steering stabbed rat, albeit with about as much finesse. There's just something almost irresistible about these RS Fords, a real femme fatale. Must. Try. To. Resist.... think nice, smart, well-made, classy Mercedes... :D

(I will say, though, that RS Fords tend to have great residuals. You're unlikely to lose a stack of cash on it. Actual sensible choice then? ;) Check very carefully that it's a real RS, too, not some Halfords-ised ST mash-up, very unlikely but theoretically possible)

A very expensive passion! Thing is, cars are one of those items that are going to end up automated and in the same category as toasters and microwaves, which is a very good thing in many ways, as putting silly emotional and massively fallible human beings in charge of tonnes of metal that can travel at 150-200mph is clearly daft. And the second they make a self-driving car that you can legally get to take you home from the pub, I'm all over that shit.

In the meantime however, they'll remain my biggest weakness when it comes to making daft choices instructed entirely by the heart instead of the head. (It's like, even though I'm a resident PC gaming spod here at BEEX, I went fully TWELVE YEARS between purchases of entirely new PCs, preferring instead to meticulously upgrade what I had over several hardware generations in my existing case, which ended up with a dust filter stuck to the side of it with masking tape to act as an impromptu dust filter. And yet, show me a car I like the look of and I'll burn through enough cash to purchase one or two top-end gaming PCs in the the blink of an eye.)

All that said, I resisted the urge to take anything for a test drive today but it's only a matter of time I fear, as I can feel the sickness gnawing away inside of me, as inevitable as the tides or the orbit of the earth.

The irritating thing is that the Leon is a really good car, everything about it is super-competent and completely inoffensive, very well built and feels utterly dependable - and I do particularly like Android Auto, I'd definitely be sorry to lose that.

I think the best thing to do with the RS is perhaps to take it out for a decent test drive, maybe it'll be like the Touraeg in that half an hour in its company would be enough to make me realise it's not a car I'd want to live with day-to-day. (On the flip side of course, I might love it to pieces, and then I'm fucked.)

As for the money thing, yes I'm clearly tipping stupid amounts of cash down the drain when it comes to cars, but my take on this is that money is for spending, if you earn it, you should spend it. Who wants to be the richest corpse in the graveyard?

I've been poor plenty enough in my life, it's nice to have a bit of disposable income, but at the same time I never lose sight of how lucky I am to be in that position.
