I quite like the one in my company van, but it's a bugger trying to select a playlist from my iPod, it really needs Duplo sized text as I continually select the wrong one. But I can swap between radio or media player with just a button on the end of a stalk on the steering column, which is handy.

Anyway, it won't matter for much longer, when we're all moving around in autonomous vehicles, you'll just need to say Alexa/Siri/Hey Google, play 'shaddap you face' by Joe Dolce .... after which the autonomous ejector seat will chuck you out of the roof for having no taste in muzak.

I mean, don't adjust the bass and treble while driving, I guess?

Well I know that now, obviously.

It's not exactly progress though is it? I could have achieved that in the S4 easily without taking my eyes off the road. (And to be clear here, I was on an empty road at 6am in the morning, no one approaching for the mile or so ahead I could see of me, and no one behind, so the only risk was to myself.)

I don't mind touchscreen controls where they're replicated with physical knobs and buttons (as is the case in the Leon with the climate control, air pointy direction, and all that gubbins), but when you can only perform fairly fundamental tasks through the touchscreen, it gets a bit irritating. (I accept changing bass and treble could easily wait, but it irritates me because I used to be able to do it with ease whilst on the move, and now I can't. And who the fuck wants a five-band graphical equaliser in a car on a fucking touchscreen?)

A mate of mine had a WhatsApp moan about keyless the other week as well. This was a very nice Lexus he bought brand new for big cash monies, only to have shit like this happen. As he noted a bit later on in the conversation, the trusty Vauxhall Astra he had some twenty years ago never caused him this sort of strife.

Anyone an expert on vans here? I'm looking at getting something medium-sized like a Trafic or a Transit Custom. I don't want anything older than 10 years and I don't want to spend more than £2-2.5k.

Is that asking too much?

Best bet is a swb transit, they're actually pretty dinky and fuel efficient. Vans are tricky, they've usually had a hard life and regardless seem to be more fragile than cars in many ways.

Hmmm the facelifted version of my S4 is now in £18-£20K territory. (Mine was a B8, the facelift is referred to as the B8.5)

Obviously it's mostly the same car but the styling is a bit sharpened up, they revised the MMI to reduce the number of buttons, the infotainment graphics got an upgrade and stuff like that.

I'm not going to make any efforts to get one over here at this moment in time, although if one turned up at a dealer I'd definitely go and take a look at it. Maybe in the new year I'll look to be a bit more proactive.

Knowing what I know now about the Type-R (too mental) and the Leon (absolutely competent in every single way, but too boring), the S4 is, with the benefit of hindsight, about my perfect car.

EDIT - And they sorted the mechatronics for the facelift, which was the only thing known to be dodgy on the pre-facelift S4, which was a £4000 fix if it broke.

Took a Touraeg out for a test drive today. It's a nice 2011 example with the 245bhp 3 litre turbo diesel engine and 8-speed (!) auto, 46000 miles on the clock with a reasonable asking price of £17K.

Have to say I didn't really like it though, it was easy enough to drive and didn't feel stupidly big or ungainly, and once out on the open road it had a reasonable turn of speed and handled surprisingly well for such a big car (but still not great) - but even after just a few miles I found myself thinking 'I actually prefer the Leon to this'. (It's worth remembering that my Leon has the same engine that VW put in the Golf GTD, and it's kind of the same car overall as well, and VW pitch the GTD as a sporty car.)

Plus the tech wasn't quite up to scratch, obviously there's no Android Auto in a 6 year old car but it did have a reasonable touchscreen, however it was missing SD card slots and USB connectivity (opting instead for iPod and AUX connectors in the glovebox).

Oh yes and it reminded me that I don't like auto boxes, the DSG with paddles in the S4 was alright, but even there I think I'd have preferred a manual box. (On balance I think I'd like my next S4 to be the 6-speed manual.)

So in the end I didn't really see the point and it was a no sale scenario, but I chatted with the salesman for a while who's a nice chap (I've bought cars off him in the past, and I work with his brother) and mentioned I was after a B8.5 S4 or 'similar' car, which he said he'd keep in mind when they're choosing what to get in stock.

Overall then, big 4x4 isn't for me.

I had a good poke around and couldn't find an SD card slot, although the one I looked at is the 'SE' model (which means Standard Equipment or just a nice way of saying 'base model', albeit a very nicely equipped base model with sat nav, front a rear sensors, auto-dimming mirror and suchlike). Maybe other models got SD/USB?

A mate at work has the earlier Touareg with the 5L W10 diesel in it, which is quite a crazy thing.

The SD/USB wasn't the main thing though, I've still got an old iPod I could bring out of retirement and just use that, it was driving it that I didn't find particularly enjoyable.

Also Touareg is a stupid name for a car and I keep spelling it wrong.

The VAG W12 is effectively two VR6 engines (or VR5s for a W10) sharing a common crankshaft.
