Cap get! The guy had a Seat Ibiza on the forecourt, it uses the same cap. I now have the Ibiza's cap.

If any of you are buying a Seat Ibiza on the IOM in the near future. Check the coolant expansion tank cap is present.

Well done on the Catholic Converter/Papal thing, BTW.

Hmmm. You know what I think? I think this car is losing coolant. Not much, but it's losing it.

See 'COOLIO1' and 'COOLIO2' below. Admittedly there's a slight difference in the angle but even accounting for that, I think the level is lower in COOLIO2. (And there's only about 50 miles between these two pictures.)

I wonder if this starts to solve the mystery of THE MISSING COOLANT EXPANSION TANK CAP, and also why a four month old vehicle with 2500 miles on it with only one private owner had found its way to British Car Auctions.

I will be checking this daily, and if my suspicions are confirmed, at least it'll get fixed under warranty. (Unless there's some horrible exemption in there for something like this.)

Stupid German cars. Just like Mercedes.

Fun fact! Seat's coolant system is named the Cooltronic.

Same in German, apparently.

(If you look round the back of the tank it's got a little 'MADE BY VW/AUDI GROUP' embossment on it. Or MADE BY VAG, or something like that. And I know embossment isn't a word.)

If you check it daily you won't see it being used - mark it with a pen (when the car is level) and check it every week. Also make sure the car is the same temperature (ie. stone cold) when you check it.

I think it's time you sold it. You've had nothing but problems with it since you bought it.

That's the thing, I think it's visibly dropped in about 50 miles, albeit only slightly. Both those pics were taken with the car completely cold.

I hope I'm wrong as it's almost in the realms of 'visual margin of error' given slightly different camera angles, but the car was parked in the same place for both shots, which is on a slight angle (but also consistent between the two pics).

If you look at the 'start point' on the left hand side where the coolant and the crosses on the tank intersect, it definitely looks lower in COOLIO2 to me.

I have been thinking to myself 'Why the fuck was the cap off the coolant tank in a four month old car with 2500 miles on it?'.

Also, I topped the coolant off once I put the replacement cap on the tank, the level was lower than that at that point.

You can't tell unless it's on a flat surface. Sure, it's leaning to the side, but what if it's also leaning to the front?

Both pictures were taken with the car parked in exactly the same spot at the back of our house, the only difference is the camera angle (which isn't much of a difference).

So whatever the leanings of the car in any particular direction might be (pro-Brexit, anti-abortion, ambivalent on drug law reform, etc), it's a consistent reporting position, a bit like a set of scales that you know underweighs by a half a pound.

I'll check it daily from now on, if it should become obvious that the coolant level is dropping, even if only slowly, it's getting taken back to get fixed.

Mines a mk1 so nothing like yours but it pissed out coolant when the temp sensor was replaced incorrectly by a twonk mechanic. Know what work it's had done lately?

Or just leave it as you'll be buying something else in January.

That was taken when I walked back to my car down on the prom after work, it'd been parked there since 7:15am, so the engine was completely cold.

Anyway, it's had a 20 mile drive since then, so I'll pop out later and take another look after it's fully cooled down again.

Early morning pic by torchlight.

It doesn't seem any lower than the last one but deffo seems lower than the early ones.

Tchoh. I guess it'll become obvious within a few days one way or the other.

Don't worry about it. If it keeps going down at this rate there will still be loads left by the time you sell it.

Have you ever had a car long enough that you had to top the fluids up, Hearthly? Including petrol.

:D

I think the longest I've ever kept a single car is the Scooby (IIRC that was nearly two years), the average historically has been 12-18 months but I have been on a bit of a mad one recently for reasons I'm not entirely sure of.

With the benefit of hindsight in terms of recent cars I'd say the S4 was probably the sweet spot. The Type-R was a bit too batshit and the Leon is a bit too boring.

Maybe an S3 or Golf GTi is about right.

They're all the kind of the same, though, normal cars with but with hard suspension and bigger engines. Wouldn't you be better off with a boring family car and something made purely for driving fun like a Caterham or something. It would be loads cheaper.

1 and 2 don't work, so 3 is "Low" and 4 is "High". "High" drowns out the radio, which, in turn, drowns out the noisy exhaust after 82 powers blew the baffling from it.

No, that's the ice mode switch. You use it when it is icy. It sucks the cold from the ice and blows it through the vents in the car so you know it is working.
