Manual, unless I just can’t get it, and then I’ve allowed myself a change to automatic before giving up. But I didn’t stall it, and didn’t make the hhhncccrnnnchhhhhh sound at any point. As I moved into second gear and got up to 18 a fox decided that it wanted me to take its life, but it misjudged its timings and I missed it by about three inches. Thanks for making that easy, mr Fox.

Good things were:
Not dying
Fox not dying

Bad things were:
Mo the instructor was barefoot. I’m now fixated on this and it’s freaking me out.
I haven’t a scooby what’s going on with the pedals. Clutch all the way down, into first, ease up, find bite, a little gas, pound coin, set off, corner, brake, clutch whatbrake up why am I still moving if there’s no gas clutchgeartwowhatwhaywhatFOXarghblinkyblinkylightsmorefaster.

It's low mileage for the grief it's given you! Keep at it.

I suspect you're learning in a diesel. They will creep forward in first gear with no gas.

The driving instructor was barefoot...? Wtf, that sounds awfully bohemian. How was she supposed to operate the dual pedals with no shoes on? 8)

But seriously, well done for taking the plunge. It all gets easier and better from here, first lesson out of the way etc. Just take your time and enjoy the new freedoms and pleasures that now await. Driving's fab. :)

EDIT: "Mo" is a bloke with big hairy feet...? Bloody hell.

Fnarrr. I knew someone would make that joke. He says gas because giving instructions ‘accellerator’ is too long a word.

The instructor is a man, Cavey, which isn’t important except for he had gross hairy man feet.

This'll all become second nature surprisingly quickly :)

A petrol will crawl forward in first as well. Or stall, but so will a diesel.

I do hope so. I’m trying to stay calm in the hope it will click at some point. Mo does throw in ‘breathe’ as an instruction amongst the others, which is kind of sweet.

First time my instructor did the emergency stop thing I just screamed and flailed my arms and legs.

I'm a better driver than that now.

It definitely will Mimi. You're young and intelligent, so it's inevitable. :)
My mum was the most nervous passenger ever and she learned to drive when well into her 40s, never having driven even in a car park, and in a 1958 VW beetle which was nearly 30 years old even back then, and drove like a tank. Modern cars are just so much better in every single way, and we're all here to help you every step of the way! :)

My wife drives with no shoes on, she feels she has better control over the pedals that way, she does normally keep her socks on though...

That's worse! Doesn't she find her feet slipping off the pedals?

I guess not, although at this point it is just habit as she's been doing it for about 11 years.

I think i could sort most of its issues for half a monkey but I little point in this. I'll wait until MoT says it needs doing, as I can live with the heater only working on 3 and 4, no 12v socket to charge things from, not being able to turn the temperature thing all the way left, the alarm draining the battery, warped brake disc on right hand side, slow coolant leak, rust on arches, lost fuse box cover, flat spot between 2k and 3k rpm and the handbrake needing adjusting.

I was going to ask if it was against the law to drive barefoot but then realised how silly that sounds.

I'm sure I read that somewhere.

Did you look at the fuel and air filters? Cheap bits to see if they'll do the trick. 30% of Eurocarparts at the moment too "SAVE30"

I kicked the exhaust a few times, and bounced it off the limiter a few times until it blew the stuffing from the exhaust. But, yeah, I will get them now.
