My old Nova used to do that, it was impossible to make it idle, so you had to keep your foot on the accelerator. Made the uphill right turn across traffic on my way to a work a fun experience :D

Any ideas?

make and model? When you were trying but the engine wasn't starting, was it just winding over or was it firing like it was trying to start?

Audi A3. T reg, only done 33000 odd miles though.

Starter motor was happily turning away as it would when you first turn the key, sounding like it was going to start, but not actually managing to.

After a couple of attmpts, turned off lights, everything, turned on hazards to let the car behind me know to go around (On a road which gets one car every 20 minutes or so, what timing...) turned the key again, still didn't start like it would but caught after about 3 to 5 seconds(? - hard to really tell, I was rather flustered, and time doesn't quite seem the same when that happens, so could well be shorter)

After I got it going again, no problems (and it started up fine the next time) although I kept the revs higher than I usually would when slow.

Sounds a bit like there's been a big air bubble that's worked its way around the fuel lines. Was the car low on fuel? Was the hill very very steep?

Sounds electrical to me, which unfortunately means it could be any one of a thousand different sensors.
What age is it? I expect it is new enough to have a OBD2 port, which means you can buy a cheap reader to see what fault it is reporting. You should be able to get one for about a tenner.

Bear in mind you will only get a code out of it if the engine management light has been on.

The hill is not steep at all (It never occured to me there was even a hill there until I took up running) just enough that I can't be sure if I used the acceletor until just before the cut out.

And I think I've let the fuel light come on once in my life (and even then just because the petrol station man got shouty at the idea that I might want to fill up my car with petrol at his petrol station.) Usually refill it at 1/4 tank left, it's on about 5/8ths now, I think.

As might be able to be told from the milage, it's only used once or twice a week, although I do give it a fair drive around to ensure the battery remains in good health. And it's used less often in the winter than summer.

T reg

It does tell me to have s ervice every time I turn on the car. Although it's been doing that since the last service.

T reg A3? It'll probably be the coil packs. The VAG packs tend to be a bit fragile when they get old and cause misfiring and random electrical issues when they start to pack up.

You can confirm if you can find someone friendly with VAGCOM who can scan the car for you.

[edit] Or if they are really far gone get the bonnet up and sniff for burning. Mine stank and I once followed a Golf limping along with hazards on that was emitting exactly the same smell of death.

I am in a nice Jetta hire car.. Basically a MK7 golf with a boot.. I feel old.

The reason for this is my current golf had reached 100K miles, and is not due to changed to November. Our fleet company asked if I would swap to another Golf (basically one that has been handed back as staff have left)

On Wed a nice shiny Black Golf arrived. Looked great on the inside but...
1. It has been smoked in alot.
2. The roof lining is stained.
3. The light switch is cracked.
4. The handbrake does not feel right.
5. The door does not shut correctly – sounds wrong.
6. The armrest on drivers door has burn holes in it.
7. 1 keyfob does not work.
8. Glove box scratched
9. Internal door handles / plastic scratched.

It is now in VW trying to get the mechanics fixed. how can you fuck a car up!!

I now get a 3rd Golf on Tuesday... not a great week

No my useful (probably not) 2 pence:
Sounds like what ever is causing the problem is flooding the engine.

I've only had similar symptoms two 1 was the EGR value killing the pressure in the engine and 2nd was a faulty engine thermostat always assuming the engine was cold and flooding it with Fuel. 1st one was diagnosed by the 4th garage I took it to and the 2nd after I noticed the engine temp being erratic.

Fault codes are the only thing the garage looks at (in my experience) which is an arse as if a value or sensor still works but reports the wrong thing its not always picked up by the engine management.

The Beemer is fixed! Yay!

It's a lovely thing to drive around in, however the sat nav is ludicrously awful. Coming back from the garage it said I would get home at 12:20pm and it would be a journey of 88 miles. I studiously ignored it completely and chose my own route, I got home at 11:20am and in 82 miles. I have no idea why it chooses the routes it does, that was neither the quickest nor the shortest.

Is it like mine and gets really pissed off if you don't follow its route exactly, with constant extremely stern admonishment and refusal to recalculate? Mine has maps from 2002 so it gets it knickers in a twist at the drop of a hat.

I should probably "buy" an "official" upgrade DVD from "the dealer".

Spoke too soon, the same error is back again, so back she goes for a third time. All this hassle over an indicator that fails every so often...

This time my approach is less of a "shit happens" and more of a "fix it or give me my money back" approach.

Car keeps bonging about tyre pressure. Dug out the Kwik fit invoice from October.

The cunts put the wrong reg AND added 10k to the mileage, so even if it's one of their tyres gone wrong or fitted badly there's no point arguing.

Fuck it, throwing all four run flats away and getting a reputable place to put decent ones on with a good look at the rims.

I can't afford new wheels this year anyway.

Febreze will help fag smell, Kovacs. Squirt that shit onto all the fabrics, including carpets, so they're wet to the touch then lock it up and leave it overnight.

You'll heave a bit at the chemical smell the next day but repeat when it gets noticeable a few times and within a week or two it'll be gone.

Can you believe that Ford only chuck in a year of AA cover with a new car? Only an extra £7 of Clubcard vouchers to go from Single to Joint on RAC roadside, recovery, onward for the year though. Which cover, along with a can of Slime, seems sensible if I'm dumping runflats without buying a spare alloy first.

What kind of idiot buys a 7 year old bimmer in June without getting breakdown 'til March? Honestly, you'd think I'd never had one before.
