Usually the same engine and same chassis, but VW are historically better at getting the best out of the engines, and significantly better at putting the interior, electrics, and drive train together.

That font of all car-based wisdom, Mr Clarkson, reckoned the Leon version of the engine was higher powered and better. As was the whole car. And cheaper. I was tempted, tbh. But then I remembered that I don't need to buy a new car.

Well I'm guessing that depends on what variant you're talking about, as it's likely that there's a Leon offering using an engine that isn't being offered in the Golf, which would make sense. Interior fittings better than a Golf though?

Also, it's a Seat. Duh.

Just buy an Atom or a Caterham 7 and be done with it. You only need two seats, anyway. And Mrs Craster would fit on your lap in the Atom. Possibly.

Duds, you think the new Subaru is attractive so your opinion on these matters is discounted automatically.

My boss had a Seat Leon Cupra-R, and he said that it was very fast and so much nicer to drive than any other car he'd driven, including his 350Z.

A friend of Gaywood and myself had a Leon Cupra. It was brilliant, but he traded it in for the diesel version, reckoning he'd save himself a grand a year on fuel bills.

Jez never drove anything like he stole it. He did do a lot of miles though. I doubt the diesel version saved him money as such, I think he just wanted a change. Not spoken to him in a while so I don't know what he is driving now.

Life size Tonkas don't really do it for me - if I was going to spend silly money on a bespoke car I'd take a 1970s Jaguar XJ-C and put all modern running gear underneath it - Supercharged 4.2 V8, brakes, suspension, chassis, window seals - the works. Beauty, reliability, coolness, comfort and speed.

After I had that I might be able to find room for Tonkas :D

That'd be rubbish in the mud.

As for silly money, hopefully (hopefully) this whole project will come in at about £4k.

Nope - my Range Rover cost £1,500, and is probably worth about £1k now, and included in the price. I'm overlooking the time this is all going to take.

Can I hijack this and say I'd like a cheap reliable 6 or 7 seater that's cheap on the fuel and on the initial pocket too...

Thanks

Looks like a fun day out. I am wondering why exactly they *have* to have TVR engines? Are they so much better than, I dunno, the one already in your Range Rover? Or any old 4.2?

Craster- quick question - why do you need a 5 door car? There's only ever two of you in it at a time.

For moving stuff about. The most annoying thing about having owned a 3-door was the total inability to get anything large into and out of the back seats.

Which is why a 3 door hatchback is brilliant. I was able to get massive stuff into the back of the Polo, the 206 and now the 316i, even without the fourth and fifth doors.

Hang on - by "something large", do you mean the Bo-hweemoth? I thought he only sat in the front. :)

Well that's screaming Zafira as the only remotely sufferable car in that price bracket. Plus the only one with a proper flex-7 style seating system you'll find if you're going very used since they invented it.

A 1.6 old shape Zafira would seem to suit you.

Which is fine for LIFO, but 5 doors are great when you realise you've accidently loaded it so you need FIFO.

Next year we will be going on holiday in a Polo with two kids. I may have to buy one of those roof boxes, or a Volvo.

I had a Zetec-S Fiesta (05) for a while, it was a lovely little car and the 1.6 petrol was a nice engine. I really enjoyed that car and had almost paid it off when I traded it for a Focus ST which I love to bits, but is quite expensive to run. I'm not sure how much longer we'll keep it to be honest. It's probably not worth all that much as there are tons of them about and people probably don't want high tax banded and thirsty cars at the moment.

Also, we really should sell the wife's Puma (it's the racing version if anyone cares unlikely at some point as it doesn't get used much).

We hired a Leon in Spain, dunno what size engine it was (it was a diesel) and I really liked, then we hired a 206 and I fucking hated it more than any car or van I have ever driven.

206s are the Chariots of Beelzebub. Fucking disgraceful, falling-apart pieces of shit. The 206 I owned has put me off ever buying a Peugot, or, indeed, any French car, ever again.

My 405 was lovely. Even Devilman drove it to Wales and back after just a couple of lessons, it almost felt like it drove it's self. Built like a tank too.

Craster, since you seemed to totally ignore my post about the current Honda Civic entirely out of hand YOU BIG MEANIE, I should also point out that it has rear seats that fold up so that you can use the footwell for storage, and fold down completely flat to give you more easily usable boot space. The boot is massive also. Having taken a look at some of the larger Golf variants, I can safely say the Civic is better for lugging stuff about in.

Ooh, no - I did see it, thanks. The Civic is something I've considered, but I don't really know anything about Honda for consumer level cars. NSX and S2000, great! I just don't really know anyone who's actually ever owned a consumer-level Honda that isn't a bike.

They're normally for grannies and grandads, but with the Civic they're trying to appeal to the younger market. So the guy in the showroom told me.
