Ordered a hydraulic jack to raise the car. I bought some exhaust fixing tape as well. I will have a look see when the jack arrives and make a decision.

Right pipe and left pipe have become separated. Probably needs a new exhaust. In the meantime, after an hour of faffing about trying to get the rusted on heats held off, I exhaust bandaged it. I will add more tomorrow. Seems quieter and I am looking for an indy garage near here.

No it is up on a ramp. I could only find one axle stand so used my ramps instead.

I’ve never quite understood the fear about that. I guess if you put the jack in a stupid place.

Well, if the jack fails, unless you're working on a monster truck there's probably not enough clearance between the chassis and the ground to avoid crushing you under the weight of the car.

Sitting at the garage waiting for a technician to diagnose the rattle coming from our front wheel.

It sounds like a load of tent poles rattling every time we go over a bump or uneven road.
My money is on a bearing or the CV joint because I want to sound like I know what I'm talking about.

My ex's jack failed and dropped his Astra on his foot, turning it twice the size and lovely shades of purple. Turned out (months later when he finally got it looked at) that he'd fractured something.

Serves him right for propping it at an angle on unstable ground (gravel).

Right? That's nothing to do with the jack, it might well have fallen off axle stands too.

Jacks don't tend to "fail". Maybe they're easier to use wrong, or something.

I am very wrong. He was killed after fling asleep at the wheel in Sheffield. Sheffield is a dangerous place.

It was Harry Hewitt who died when the jack slipped and his van fell on him.

Jacks have a narrow footprint, there's just a lot less stability there if for example someone bumps into the car. They just aren't designed for holding cars up while you work under them. And they have been known to fail. Obviously most times it will be fine and you won't have your head squashed like a melon but I'd much rather not take the chance.

Harry Hewitt's death was INCONCLUSIVE. Someone warned him about either the jack or the way it was done, it's hard do tell.

23:27 onward. Worth watching just for the epic stunt effects and the fact that his friends didn't really seem that concerned about him being dead.

Also I'm not convinced that a van that could be lifted by a single man (and not just a corner - the whole side) would kill a man if it lowered itself gently onto his chest. Maybe.

Trolley jacks can have the same problem - less so the stability side of it, but the hydraulic pressure seals can go, and often do - I've had one fail while I was jacking the car up.

Sometimes they go with a big bang and the whole thing fails, sometimes it leaks slowly.

Either way, for the cost of a pair of decent axle stands, is it really worth taking the risk?

Thanks for the clip Grim... Before I saw it I had googled for 'Harry Hewitt' as I didn't get the reference but the first page of results were not about 'Coronation Street'.

If the hydraulic seals go on a jack, take it back to the person you bought it from and hit him with it.

A fine plan, of course, provided you're not under the car when the seals go ;)

Assuming you weren't lifting something heavier than it was meant to, make sure to take it back to the person you bought it from and hit him with it. He should certainly give you another one.

My wife took her car to a garage she kept hearing a loud knock when she turned left. They couldn't find anything with the steering or suspension.

It was my skateboard rolling around in the boot.

Mate at work is selling his M3 for £8000. He's had this car a long time and it's immaculate, he's looked after it really well.

I could probably get about £6000 for my Type-R, and I could find the extra £2000..... Mrs Hearthly wouldn't thank me if I got another car that's missing a couple of doors though.

Thing is though, I've been out in that M3 and it's absolutely fucking awesome. WANT.

Nice plate too.

£8,000 for that is strong money unless it's really low mileage IMO.

Silver with black leather - worst colour combination, by far the most "common" and is really boring (one of the reasons I sold mine)

By the looks of the rear lights it's a pre-facelift. I paid £7,800 for my facelift convertible in November last year, which had every option except the TV function.

Mileage and service history, really. My cab was on 96K when I bought it I think, with a full service history, 90% at BMW dealers.

90K, BMW service history to five years ago, then independent local specialist. It's a 2003 car, apparently.

Going rate on AT is between £7,250 and £7,500 for 2003 cars with around 90K.

Is it manual or SMG?

Manual. He says it is priced a bit on the high side but apparently you've 'got to try'.

Two enquiries since it went up on the local Buy & Sell Facebook page last night.

I've offered him a 2008 Honda Civic Type-R and a grand.

Ooops my mistake it's actually an SMG, I thought it was manual.

He also wants to know what the best colour combination is 'cause he reckons silver and black is just fine.

Best standard colour combo, as in the most desirable, is generally considered to be black with red leather.

Estoril Blue with black leather is also highly desirable I understand, but I'm pretty sure Estoril is a BMW Individual colour on the M3.

SMG is going to lower the price a bit too. Manuals are more due to rarity and driver involvement. That and the SMG-II (like the SMG-III in the M5) is known to lunch clutches very quickly when driven hard. Has it had a clutch change or is it still on original clutch/DMF?

Ooh, E46 M3, lovely jubbly mate. All-time engine for me, that. :)

Heard nasty stories about the SMG 'box though, so tread carefully and do your research? (Gaz etc. will know much more than I do, but just saying like)

Cheers GazChap, I shall assault him with information and questions in the morning when we're both back in work :)

Not sure I like the idea of this clutch malarkey though, I don't want to walk into any big bills.

The Type-R is a great little car and being a Honda of course, nothing goes wrong with it, nothing will probably ever go wrong with it, and it's pretty sane on tax (under 2 litre), insurance (I'm an old man), and fuel (33mpg long term). Servicing and consumables (such as tyres) are very reasonable too.

On the other hand though, I really do love the E46 M3, there's something about them I just can't resist, and I know for a fact that this one has been impeccably looked after. I'll ask him about the clutch though.....
