Backing into the drive today, I forgot which car I was in so took my off off the brake and rolled cheerfully into the concrete fence post. The post is ok and the ka seems remarkably unscathed.

Make sure it's had any recall work done. Toyotas have been plagued by bad build quality lately. Seat ibizas are lovely little cars, had two already myself.

I don't remember what that first call ws about actually, but I did at least find out it had already had the 'intelligent battery sensor' recall sorted. You know, the cable that's so intelligent it caused widespread battery discharge and death. Ahaha?

So bought a Toyota Auris, picked it up Wednesday gone.
It is (semi)-auto, and I have noticed there is a clunk from the front of the car when I go from drive to neutral, or from having my foot on the accelerator to not. Any one know if this is normal for an auto? Anything to worry about?

It's a 2002 model, and I think it's a Mk2.5 rather than just a Mk2 (not sure though)

It's a blue, manual S-VT Sport, so it has a fairly high spec for MX5s - heated leather seats, strut braces up the wazoo and, critically, an LSD as standard. The engine has VVT so is torquier down low, makes it more usable

~96,000 miles on the clock.

MOT'd until end of April.

Comes with a Bluetooth-enabled Pure radio too which is pretty good - upgraded the firmware on it last week to fix an issue with it not auto-connecting to my phone.

Drives beautifully, and as far as I can tell there's no rust on it (or certainly wasn't when I bought it anyway )

Only downsides to the car are:

- couple of scratches on the OSF wing - not really that noticeable and may even polish out, I've not really been that bothered to look at them.

- fan belt squeals occasionally on a cold start, this only started this week though so might just be the cold weather

- no service history to speak of. I need to contact Mazda to see what they have in the dealer network for it, but there's no SH with the car. However, the previous owner told me that it was basically given a thorough once over by one of the guys at MX5Nutz shortly before she bought it, and this is reflected in the state of the thing - the engine bay is pristine - only time I've seen an engine that clean is on a new car, and yeah, no rust.

- Bit of wear on the seats but nothing major.

Looking for about £1,600.

I'd get it looked at, could be an engine mount away or exhaust touching or something simple like that.

So how does this work then? The car is under warranty, do I just turn up at a Toyota garage and ask them to look at it? Does a warranty cover investigative work like this?

Call the garage you bought it from first, they'll tell you to book it in. It won't cost you anything.

Have done, they said it was warranty so had to go to a Toyota garage.

Technically, it's their problem as you bought it from them, so they need to sort it out.
In reality, it might be best to go straight to Toyota. Give them all the info, explain the situation and see what they say you need to do.

edit: My response would have been "Great, i'll drop it off tomorrow and you can send it over to them. Let me know when it's fixed would you", but then I like arguing with garages who try and shirk their responsibilities

Nearly had something similar a few months ago on the A5. Uncharacteristically I was driving sensibly for a change so I was in the left lane.

Had I been in the right lane, I'd have been stuffed.

Not a massive amount, but it's almost certainly written off.

The front wheel isn't in the right place and I had to kick my door rather hard to convince it to open. It took one hell of a knock. There's some damage to the off side too (although nowhere near as much).

It's not that exciting, really. Cars starts careering around in front of us. Mrs Grim... picks the path of least resistance to the hard shoulder (via the Laguna, which was the perfect call). We get out, don hivi vests, and I grab the first aid kit and run to the nearest car (the silver focus) which contained two old people who had some cuts. I use my antiseptic wipes for about two seconds before a nurse pulls up and steals my glory (and my first aid kit). We call the RAC and the police send them away again. I inform the officer that he'd just sent our ride home away take the opportunity to remind him how many different types of medicine he had to write down when taking Mrs Grim...'s statement. He got us a ride in a police car, which was fun.

Currently £1.27.9p for normal unleaded over here, we've been told by our OFT that a 4p price differential with the UK is acceptable due to the smaller market and increased transport costs etc etc, and admittedly it has come down a bit recently, but folks are starting to get a bit cross about the cheap fuel that's widely available across now.

I remember it peaking at something utterly fucking ridiculous like £1.52.9p for super unleaded for the Scooby, that stung a bit on a car that did about 15-18mpg when driven 'enthusiastically'.
