Unfortunately this is the demo Disco and we're on their fleet insurance. It's got the heater element in it too.

Wait - you don't even own that, do you? I don't see how they can blame you for a manufacturing issue.

8) I'd be kicking off about that, no way should you be liable for the windscreen splitting on a demo car. Wasn't from a stone flying up at it was it?

Just to echo what others have said - tough tits on them, this is entirely a matter for them and their insurance (and their excess), especially if you get plenty of photos showing the screen just split and is therefore a defect, and nothing you've actually done whatsoever.

Bugger off! Flaming cheek.

We're liable for their excess, though I will be arguing that is nothing I've done. No stone that I recall. Getting photos while it's still light is a good idea.

Excess for what though?

I think there's a distinction to be drawn here between accidental damage (for which I agree there would likely be an excess), and mechanical failure or defect, for which any demands for excess payment are a G.P.Y. scenario.

Before I torch every car parked outside in addition to the building itself of my local JLR dealership in furious anger, do you know you’re being charged the excess or are we dealing in hypotheticals?

Hypotheticals - "don't worry, it had a tiny chip and was in the books for maintenance already" said the finance guy who'd tagged along to get "his personal car" back.

I haven't got a BMW yet!

Also, that Golf R still hasn't sold and has had a price drop. This is the dealer I got the Leon from and where the guy has said he'll give me retail value for the Leon if I spend more money, (so about £2000-£2300 more than I'd get on trade-in anywhere else, at the time retail was £17.8K and trade was about £15.5K), so that'd potentially get me in the Golf for £5K.

I might wander over at lunch and see what the best deal he can give me is. He's been sat on that Golf for months now so should be keen to get rid.

Oh mate, don’t do it, there’s a reason it’s cheap. Fast Golf is the default/clueless numpty choice, perfectly worthy etc but ultimately bloody boring and devoid of any personality. Do this and you’ll be selling again on no time; it’s really not very different to the Golf GTD clone you have now (don’t be taken in by the AWD either, it’s a crappy Haldex system, not the real deal). Plus you have the cruddy little 4-pot.

Don’t let anyone put you off with BMWs are wankers cars etc., BMWs are for people who have got a clue about driving and like rear wheel drive and proper driving dynamics. So what if they’re crap when it’s snowing, catch the bus on the 5 days a year we get snow. If Golf drivers are smug on those 5 days, you can be smug on the remaining 360!

So, quick question, car nerds.

My window washer has stopped working during the cold weather. I think the fluid froze early last week (not enough blue) and I may have stressed it out in my attempt to pump ice through it. When I flip the stalk, I don't even hear the electric noise that usually comes out.

Is it worth checking a fuse, or am I going to need a garage to look at this?

No nothing about cars myself, but 4 people in my dept got these on very good personal lease deals a few years ago and they have all gone for a 2nd one, total rocket car by all accounts :)

Well, unless they have a 2 Series Gran Tourer.

BMW are making the next 1-Series FWD too.

I can understand why, but I can't help but feel they're destroying one of their only USPs. I guess the vast majority of people neither know nor care which wheels are being driven, though.

That’s the thing Gaz. As this thread ably demonstrates, most people don’t give a fig whether a car is fwd or rwd, and, moreover, don’t know why this should even be important in the first place. Most people buy VW Golfs and their derivatives/clones..

These people have little sense of adventure.

The battery was too low on the Rover to start it yesterday. This morning it had 40 mins on charge and was fine.

Why not replace it with a vintage jalopy you have to handcrank every morning? Far cooler, and you'd get to wear driving goggles.

I got to work as the coolant sensor screamed at me, looked under the bonnet and the temp sender I'd fitted had worked loose and pissed all over the undertray.

This is seat of the pants motoring.

I also saw MarkG in his modern classic too.

Some folk just don't really care about cars, they just want to get from point A to point B without fuss (my boss is totally like this), seeing the car as little more than equivalent to white goods. She also drives really slowly. I'm not really sure what point I'm trying to make here, but there's plenty of market for shit boxes and sports cars.

Yes, most people are over the moon with a Hyundai with a 7 year warranty, trouble free A to B motoring. Still others resent those few who DO care about the car they drive and cars in general, and/or have the cash to indulge their passions; see your BMW drivers are wankers type post.

You've got to be into something; for some people it's Twitter, computer games and iPads; for me, it's cars, motorbikes, women and wine. Each to his own! :D

It was more the driving backwards in the snow bit that I liked, but yes the wanker stereotype was a sweet added bonus for extra chuckles.

My sister has a beemer convertible so i can't be a racist if I have black friends, it's quite old now - I think it's a 323 with some M kit on it. She loves it.

I thought it was OK but nothing special. Of course, it's not a fire-breathing monster, so I wasn't expecting to be super-wowed.

As I've long said, personally I love pissing off the herd drones, be it with very loud, very red Porsches, 1800cc motorbikes with all the silencing and catalysts removed, large 2-strokes with great swirls of blue smoke etc.

For some of us, we actually *revel* in the contempt and actively seek it out at every opportunity. :D

It's all so childish I know. But then, who wants to grow up anyway?

Heh. On the contrary.
Price is no guarantee of anything; in fact high price usually means 'mainstream', the Golf R being a prime example. I've had plenty of (to my mind) awesome cars and bikes in my youth which were worth less than a grand.

I label people 'herd drone', those same people label me 'Porsche wanker', 'arsehole biker' etc. My tip to you: care less about what other people think of you? I don't give a rat's what they think of me.
