OK, here it comes. Brace yourself Gertie! I listened to this at least six times and the problem I had mainly was that I really didn't like the start of the mix which made it hard to get through. And even harder to write this as that involved me listening to it again...
1. I like the prodigy, I don't love them though, and wasn't knocked out by this remix as I think the concept of remixing something that wasn't fundamentally broken just smacks of ripping off a more talented artist. Not bad though
2&3 nicely mixed Grim..., but I really don't like repetitive club music that much and from my limited knowledge of the genre these two don't feel like anything other than parodies of what I assume would be good tracks. I found these two about as tuneful as someone digging the road up outside the house while I had a hangover. Sorry
4. Sounds like Poodle Rawk to me. Don't like this either.
5. This sounded quite promising after the dismal opening, but though I initially liked it, I grew to hate it like a squawking harridan by the fourth listen.
6. Iron Maiden... I'm quite a fan of classic rock, but Iron Maiden are a band that don't do a great deal for me. This is quite rousing and reminds me of my childhood - I can remember owning Iron Maiden when I was a kid of about ten. I've met Brucie quite a few times as well - he's a star, if very short and hairy. So this is an OK.
7. I'm not the world's biggest rap fan by any stretch and this doesn't change that. I don't like Eminem. I don't care how clever the words are because it just sounds like ranting to me, which equates to too far into the realms of noise rather than music for me. If he was in the room shouting at me I'd fucking lamp him like anybody else who shouted at me.
8. I have quite a few Primal Scream albums, but I've not heard this track before - it's not bad, but I've heard better Primal Scream stuff TBH.
9. I like this one. It's funky.
10. Linkin Park RAWK. This is OK, but truth be told I always find this stuff a bit unrefined and MOR. It's rock music with stabilisers on - it feels like a product being made for the money and not the love. The remix doesn't help at all.
11. Meh
12. Futurama theme. It's OK, I like the show, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to the soundtrack, particularly as this seems to have been remixed as well and isn't better for it.
13. More Linkin Park. They feel like corporate rock to me - I'm sure they've done some good stuff, but this just feels like a poor imitiation of Faith No More or Pearl Jam - it's like they've deliberately discovered a winning formula and they just crank the music out cookie cutter style while wearing lots of eyeliner. Still, I prefer this to the remixed track a few back.
14. I like the calypso rhythm. I don't have any Fiddy, but I quite like this and contrary to what I thought with that catchy beat I didn't find it irritating after a few listens. Oooh, one I like
15. This feels like a remix of a gameshow title theme with lilting lyrics over the top. You may have come to the conclusion that I don't like these "bangin' choons" style tracks very much
16. Over produced acoustic guitar opening, nasally whiney voice with keyboard fills rising to a duetting crescendo. No
17. Oooh, opera. Quite a nice change of pace
18. Losing the will to live now.
19. Oh fuck off, not even the vision of Erin Grey springing into my mind in white spandex could rescue this!
20. Don't know what the fuck this is, but it sounds like you made it yourself.
So Grim..., sorry old bean but I didn't like this very much at all. I wish I could apologise more, but then I'm the one who had to listen to it about 7-8 times to do it justice, so I could argue that that was apology enough.
It was all a bit pop for me - it had a bright commercial sheen to it that I find uncomfortable to listen to - as I said earlier, it didn't feel as if (with the possible exception of one or two tracks) any of the artists on that mix were doing it for the love of music - they were doing it to pay the rent/mortgage, buy whores, drugs, bentleys, gucci, swimming pools - none of which is bad of itself, but it all feels a little bleak to me. So congrats, I'm now depressed.
No I'm not, I've just realised I can take this album off my iPhone now
