I've had two eBay auctions where buyers have collected, and accepted as their feedback rating was good (because if they had done something anti-social in the past as a result of an eBay transaction, they would have been given negative feedback or be starting off with a fresh eBay account, I assumed). Worked out OK. Suppose you could request to hand over the item in a public place if you feel uneasy.

If EBay causes so much hassle, why do people continue to use it?

Not so useful for selling certain specialist items though. Like old Transformers figures. You need something like eBay to get a wide enough audience of potential buyers if you want to get a decent price as a seller. So I still occasionally use eBay, and grudgingly. We really need a strong competitor to replace eBay IMO.

I've rarely had problems with ebay to be honest, I think it's really unfortunate when people do. I do find I get better results with it too. E.g. the baby stuff I'm flogging at the moment, I've tried Freeads, Gumtree, postcards in shops and the local rag. Nothing. I've stuck it on ebay and I'm getting bids - so I'm happy - it just seems to have the biggest audience I suppose. Got some games on there too if anyone is interested. ;)

There's other people here and he's been told it has to be done in the daytime.

My main concern is getting the new PSU here. I paid for next day delivery before 1pm so it should be with me tomorrow. 37 bloody quid inc delivery, what a tit.

Still, better it blew up then than when he took it home. But what are the chances of that happening just before the auction ends? Tits!

Of course I am hoping it is just the supply that has broken and not the laptop causing a fault in the supply. Bit unlikely I guess.

You should bung a link up on here :)

Only had occasional problems with Ebay but 99% of the time it's been hassle-free and I've probably 'won' at least 2000 auctions so I'm happy enough to carry on using it. I use it much less so as a seller but when I have I've had no issues either.

I wouldn't. I've bought two cars off Ebay, which are difficult to post, so obviously I went out and met them for that. It's no different to what would be happening if you sold it in the local papers.

Well, the second time, I asked him to put some stamps on it and park it next to the postbox but it was still there a week later.

I haven't had any trouble with ebay or Paypal, but my brother has.

1. He sold an item, but the buyer didn't opt to pay for recorded delivery. He posted the item and received the money. The buyer sent in a claim to ebay saying he hadn't received the item, and was refunded, while my brother had his Paypal account suspended. Months later, the item turned up at our house as undelivered.

2. He sold an item and received the money through Paypal. He posted the item and received positive feedback from the buyer. A few days later, Paypal contacted him saying the funds had been taken back due to the seller not actually having the money to pay them. Paypal couldn't give two fucks after ringing them, and he's told to take it up with the buyer directly. I'm not sure how he's gotten on yet.

I've looked on ebay a few times but have never bought anything. I tend to be put off by the amount of 'professional' shops that look like GeoCities pages from 1995, and my natural fear of over-bidding.
I do use Amazon's secondhand vendors though.

I insist on it, if the bidders don't want to pay for it then they need to bid on somebody elses item.

Feel free to bid on the baby stuff too of course. :p

Of course, the reason Ebay is so good for sellers is that it attracts a wide audience of people that are comfortable using it. And the reason for that is they do bend over backwards for buyers and couldn't give a crap about sellers.

But should they start adopting a system that could in any way be abused by a seller, buyer faith would fall and the audience for the sellers would shrink. Sellers benefit hugely from the system being biased towards buyers, oddly enough.

And I'm not sure we need competition here. If it were split 50-50 between two sites you'd only reach half the audience.

The laptop has now gone. The man turned up at a random time (rather than arranging a time like I asked) handed me an envelope full of notes and buggered off again.

He was muttering about putting XP back on it, which is probably abit daft as it was actually running Vista faster than it ever did XP.

So sale completed, and I've not been murdered.

Heh, nice one Chinny. :)

I'm sick of people not reading the listings better, twice now I've been asked questions that the answers to are clearly stated in my listing!

Where's the best place to sell an electronic keyboard? I've tried Gumtree/freeads/postcard/local rag/ebay/cash converters. It's new in the box and I'm asking for less than half of what it cost. :s

It's a Casio CTK-401 boxed, been out about twice. I paid £80. If you and Shin fancy a drive out (and of course it is of use to you) you can have it for £20, I just want rid (and holiday money)! PM me if you (or anybody)would like more details.

Nah, I thought it might be a better spec than my current keyboard but from what little info I can find on the web about it, it appears not. Cheers anyway though.

I'm after a cheap DBZ collection (anime) that is NOT 'home made' as I bought one in my 'young ebay days' and it was made...this made me sad inside. I have a business on Ebay actually aswell-hehe

My other half and a friend have separately fallen foul of eBay/PayPal scammers, both when selling mobiles.

In both cases the buyer used a compromised PayPal account to pay. In my SO's case she'd taken the money from PP to her bank account but luckily not posted it yet. She had to pay them back (which at the time was a faff because back then you couldn't load your account with pounds, you could just pay straight through from your card).

My friend much more recently fell victim to the same thing, except he'd already posted it. Alas it was an unverified address in PayPal, and they've basically told him there's nothing they can do so he should contact "local law enforcement." The case continues, but it's not looking enormously hopeful.

I have an unverified address.

I don't know why, as I've bought and sold to and from that address, and linked it to my bank account, which is certainly legitimate. I'd have looked into how you verify it (it was ages before I even realised I wasn't verified), but frankly I can't be arsed, as it's never been a problem and I rarely use ebay anyway.

Plus I've moved twice since using it last, and will probably move again soon. Seven times in five years, wooo.
