Just my regular job. But lately, about half the dev team left (I've gone from 'the new guy' to being almost a senior developer, in just over a month), due to unhappiness with lots of stuff. So I think it's partly in reaction to that, and partly because I am good at what I do. But mostly because of people leaving :P

CG: 29k, which is excellent for a PHP development job around my neck of the woods (west midlands). Plus bonuses e.g. I got a £690 quarterly bonus last week. *looks at unused, dusty PS3 under table* I think I'm going to save for a holiday.

Do you have student loans coming out? It's the one thing that annoys me most about earning, the more you earn the more of it gets stolen as a damn loan repayment. I think I'm scheduled to pay mine off in about 2021.

*shrug* It's by far the most I've ever earned. Until last August, the most I'd ever previously earned was 18k a year (and that itself was a joy ), so I'm just all delighted, like.

I've managed to avoid them until now due to cunningly never bothering to finish my degree. They start next month.

I earn 15K, make payments to pay off my MA loan of about 1/2 my take home wage each month and have just had to draw 50 quid cash off my credit card because I have no more money until I get paid in 2 weeks.

I've been paying off my student loan for about 8 years now - I really hope it's done soon. It'll work out as about a 8% payrise when they stop taking it.

I started in 97 too, so no fees to pay back. Only took out £7k worth of loans, and paid the last of that off early in one chunk a couple of years ago.

Law school cost £8k for the year, though, which was a pain. I had to get a loan from the bank for that. Thankfully if you get a training contract at a law firm they pay that back for you. Or, if you're doing well at university and get a training contract in the third year (which is what a lot of people do), they pay for the law school fees upfront. They also give you support money for the year spent at law school (of around £2-3K).

I don't know why more people don't do law - it's relatively easy to study at university and at law school, you can arrange to get the law school fees paid for you before you even ever go there, and once you've started work there's no bother about promotion ever. For every year more qualified you are, you get paid more. How's that for an easy ride?

I know also how much is the beer in ireland. I've been there on holidays 4 years ago. Only thing cheap in the country was the car rental (which is compensated by the ridiculous parking costs)

Leeds is one of the most expensive places in the North to live, actually (especially in the studenty area I live in).

In 2006, the year after finishing my MA, I JUST managed to scrape through the year, working full time on a per annum wage of 8.5K, NO JOKE. I am skilled at living on absolutely fuck all beyond mere human capabilities. Co-op skip across the road from us usually has lots of loaves of bread in it on a Sunday night :P

Well, it isn't, so there.

The study of law combines politics, philosophy, pedantry and arguing. What's not to like?

The practice of law does rather depend on what area you work in though. Tax lawyers, for instance, may as well be accountants.

You can choose not to work for one of the big City firms. There are lots of lovely high-paying law firms around where you can happily leave at 5.30 every night. Actually, I know people at big City firms who do just that. Honestly, the marketing people at the multi-national cosmetics company I used to work at worked longer hours than most lawyers.

Lawyers just whinge a lot if they have to stay late once a month. I'm very happy with the life, and in 6 years of lawyering can count on three hands the number of 12 hour days I've worked.

I started on £12k in this job, and I've got up to £23k in two years. Makes me wonder where I could be if I hadn't drifted around for 2 years after Uni desperately trying not to make any life decisions.

My student loans are similarly gargantuan, but I've simply decided to ignore them and focus on paying off the mortgage. They're just another little nibble from my pre-tax paycheck.

Depends where you live, and what you do with your time.
A good chum lived in Bedford and paid £400 a month rent for a two-bed house. He earned £30k in London (as opposed to doing the same job in nearby St. Neots for £19k), and his commute was an hour, each way.

The original question was rhetorical really, but I know what you mean :) I have friends earning a fortune in London, but it depends what you are experienced in. I work in Higher Education, so working in London will just get me a couple K more, nothing really considering the extra cost of living there. But mainly, I don't want to live in the city, I'm too much of a country kinda guy. Give me 20K anywhere remotely nice (job in Brighton pleeeeeeeease!) and I'll have my post grad loan paid off in 3 years then I'm free.

Like I say, I'm more whinging for the sake of whinging, I get by ok :) It's lucky I have no real expensive vices other than the occasional computer upgrade and I'm ugly as sin so don't have to worry about the expense of a girlfriend :P
