The BBC wrote:
Classic murder-solving board game Cluedo has been given a facelift which has killed off its famous characters.

Old characters like Colonel Mustard and Professor Plum have been replaced by football pundit Jack Mustard and video game billionaire Victor Plum.

The house has been renovated from a stately home into a modern mansion complete with a theatre and spa rather than library and ballroom.

There are also new murder weapons, including a dumbbell and baseball bat.

Miss Scarlet is now movie star Kasandra Scarlet, cook Mrs White is now child star Diane White and Reverend Green is now Jacob Green, "the man on the scene with all the ins".

The game, in which players try to discover who murdered the house's owner, Mr Black, was launched in 1949.

It was invented by a solicitor's clerk called Anthony Pratt, whose original characters wielded bombs and hypodermic needles.

Hasbro spokesman Craig Wilkins said: "We wanted to bring the game bang up to date. The new characters are more in tune with modern society, and with the added touch of a first name, more human."

This makes me die a little bit inside. If the game isn't selling well, kill it off and make something new you lazy sods.

It basically means they can sell this Cluedo for a bit, then in a few years time release a "classic" version which is the same as the version we have now.

Can't blame them I guess.. Didn't something similar to this happen with Monopoly? Loads of different versions?

Yes. And they are all ultimately pretty pointless. Except Make-Your-Own-Opoly, which is awesome.

Gah! That's crap. Because I am a tremendously sad and empty person, Cluedo is my absolute favourite board game and so this news makes me weep inwardly. Which can be uncomfortable, let me tell you.

I see nothing wrong with a 'novelty' edition of Cluedo, maybe set in the Big Brother house (it was Jade Goody, in the swimming pool, with the concealed microphone) or maybe the House of Commons (Gordon Brown, in the MP's Lobby with the Mace). After all, as someone else said, there have been many localised Monopoly editions in the past. However, it won't feel like 'real' Cluedo without Colonel Mustard, the antique pistol and other such anachronisms. The dated feel to the game is all part of the fun, something DC Thompson forgot when they destroyed The Beano and The Dandy.

We made one of those up last year as a Christmas present, and filled all the board in with various pictures etc of the couple we gave it to. My god, it took hours, and resulted in me having to buy an overpriced printer from PC World on Christmas Eve after my last one packed in.

It was an awesome gift though, and they were very pleased with it.

This sums it up for me. Although I didn't think about the marketing side of things with it becoming a "classic" version which makes sense.

I think my annoyance comes from the creators feeling the need to make a "bang up to date" version with "human" characters to try and hard sell it to the yoof market.

Bet you anything they will drop the knife being a weapon.

Die, marketeers, die.

Bound to happen, I reckon. Look at the current Monopoly Classic which is actually much more retro than any version of Monopoly that's been on sale for decades.

Or perhaps it was Tom Baker, slumming it on ITV, with the voodoo doll of John Nathan-Turner:

Remeber the Cluedo TV show, featuring Leslie Grantham? It made for the obvious joke, 'it was Leslie Grantham, in the back of a taxi, with a revolver'.

What nonsense. If they wanted to make it contemporary, it should have been:
Gary "Professor Bum" Stardust as the rampant paedo recently back from Thailand;
Col. Abdul "Mustard" Aziz, notorious Iraqi chemical weapons scientist and wanted war criminal;
Gianna Rectum, porn star famed for her scarlet ringpiece;
Mrs Lavinia Lilywhite, Middle England Daily Mail reader and noted "ban this sick filth" proponent;
Mistah Gleen, sickening ching chong ping pong Chinese stereotype and prominent polluting industry magnate;
Svetlana "Mrs Pee Cock" Yellowfeverski, famous golden shower porn star from Sovietest Russia and guest of Gianna.

The game takes place in an overpriced London hotel. The victim is Arthur Black, a poor sod who was killed in a terrifying crash which was the result of the police sending a fleet of pursuit cars and helicopters to arrest him for putting plastic wrap in his recycle bin and for having underinflated tires.*

edit: reformatted as originally (and painstakingly) posted using my mobile

*the tire in question being the spare

See my post which has links to clips of the show.

These days it would be more likely to be "Leslie, with the one eyed snake, in the computer room".

I played the Monopoly here and now version this week, which has just made all the money into tens of thousands instead of normal numbers.

It was most confusing, when you're used to paying rent based on a tenth of the asking price plus 4 pounds (when you play a lot of monopoly you notice shit like this).

I was most amused when the utilities asked you to still pay 4 x what was on the dice though. "Um... 8 pounds please?" "Certainly, please can I have change from 10,000, the smallest note in the game."

And after you build a house, you're evicted and somebody else moves in.

Yeah, but you do get to steal the entire board first.

And while on the first turn you collect $200 passing Go, the next time it's $2000, then $20k, then $200k.

Also, all your notes expire after 5 trips, but are worthless anyway after 2.
