I'm having my new sofa delivered on Monday, somewhat earlier than expected.

I now need to dispose of my old sofa quite quickly. What's the best way of going about this? Are there any schemes where someone will come and pick it up?

Anyone here interested in taking it off my hands?

When we got our new sofa I called the council, who took it away for a £16 fee.

Or, depending on where you live, you could just leave it outside and wait for some students to steal it.

How long did it take them?

They'd have to be some desperate students to steal this sofa.

Freecycle it, or take it to the tip.

You could always do what me and markg did when we helped a friend. Smash it all up into bits and stuff it in the loft.

If you have a garden, burn it. The sofa, that is, not the garden.

Never underestimate the power of alcohol.

I quite easily found a local charity (with a bit of googling) that were happy to come and collect unwanted usable furniture. See if there's anything round your way.

My council do one collection a week.

Funnily enough, we smashed an old sofa to bits only last week. We're moving out at the end of the month, and there's no way we'd be able to get it down the stairs without it fucking up all the wallpaper. It took two evenings to break it down small enough that it would fit in bin liners, but when we started we only had a bread knife and a screwdriver, so make sure you've got some tools first.

There are charities, many that are run by the council, who should be able to fill you in further, that will take old furniture and redistribute it to those more needy. It's a good scheme and obviously costs you nothing, and they are usually quite flexible about time so as not to inconvenience you.

Yep, the one near me was brilliant when I needed to get rid of a table and chairs and a sideboard. They brought three burly lads to do all the moving, too.

Wow.. it's like you're all reading my mind! I have a couple of arm chairs to get rid of... They're a bit dated but in perfect condition!! Seems a shame to just throw them away.

I'm sure someone would be able to make use off them.

If it's still in usable condition, either Freecycle it or take it to a furniture charity shop. Charity Shops can't take stuff that isn't fire safe, but loons off Freecycle will take away absolutely anything.

I rang the council and they said that unless it has a fire safety certificate no charity shops will take it, so even though it's fire safe I can't go down that route as I don't have the documentation.

The council can't come and pick it up until the 19th.

The only other option was to ring the county council and obtain a permit for taking a commercial vehicle to the domestic recycling centre, and then borrow my Dad's van, chuck the sofa in the back and take it up there. I got everything sorted permit-wise, then rang my Dad to ask to borrow it only to find that some twunt rear-ended him today and has basically written it off.

Bugger.

Isn't the fire safety cert normally attached to the sofa, normally under the cushions. Worth having a check (assuming you haven't already).

I haven't read this thread properly, but I'm going to presume that someone's mentioned Freecycle already.

It's the little plastic square with a bit of paper inside. It's pretty much sewn into every sofa...

By law, I think.
