So I was at a meeting last week, in a swanky new building that had accessible wi-fi for my iPhone to sup on. Finding unlocked wi-fi in this day and age is a rarity, so I went for it. Did some research for the meeting, checked e-mithers... although it was slower than my 3G, which was stupid.

So I check my bank account and I got charged a tenner a time for 'BT Open Zone'? That's harsh as fuck. Is this a common knowledge thing and I'm just a noob when it comes to modern existence, or are people as shocked as me?

I'm sure I deserve it being an iPhone owner etc, but still. What a nasty surprise; if I wanted to get screwed out of 40 quid, I'd have headed off to Call Lane.

You gave them your bank details but didn't expect to be charged?

I thought Open Zone was actually included in most O2 data tariffs. At most you should get charged a maximum of £1 per day I thought.

Are you on O2's iPhone tariff?

If so, then You should get access free. If not, then you're probably screwed.

- I didn't give them my details there and then. I therefore assumed cahoots with O2, who do have my details. Helpful as always Dudley.
- I have an iPhone contract, so this shouldn't have happened according to that link.

I'm speaking to the people in charge of the building tomorrow anyway, so I may start booting about while I'm down there.

We need a rolleyes smiley.

If there wasn't some sort of login or screen saying they were going to charge, they can't charge anyway.

They do in motorway services when you have your laptop. But then I guess they need your details in the first place as they won't know who you are.

Is there a specific reason you (who I actually don't remember posting anywhere ever) have chosen to be a bit of a twat in this thread? Or is this some kind of "Oh he once said something I didn't like but I don't actually have the wit to speak up so I'll just hold some kind of grudge forever" thing?

EDIT : Nope got me, just went through most of the posting history and all I can find is a note about PC Zone.

I'm nice to nice posters and a jerk to jerks.

And thanks Joans - just have to figure it out now ;)

I'd be interested to know exactly where I was a jerk because it isn't in this thread.

Think you're both over-reacting a bit here.

The first one was a reasonable response to the first post. They can't charge you without your details, you've given SOMEONE permission.

The other two were reactions to YOU being a twat to me, first for a snarky comment and secondly for committing the cardinal sin of all message boards, the "I'm going to ignore you" attention whore post.

If that's really all it is (namely you having a meltdown over 1 innocuous comment I made) then can we please move on right now because I'm feeling myself getting stupider just dealing with it.

BT Openzone is supposed to be free on iPhones. This is a billing cock up, ring O2.

Mmm - I'll challenge that one. BT Openzone is supposed to be free on the O2 iPhone tariff. Not the same thing.

Indeed. When I had my old iPhone, it was a jailbroken phone with a PAYG o2 SIM in it. They still wouldn't let me on, even though I was an o2 customer, so they must look you up.

I believe they denied me access based on having to type in my mobile phone number (and I tried a few as an experiment).

I think you'll find that, having tested it myself, I am also empirically correct - not quite as good a correct, but it all adds up.

But you have data from other sources, so it has also been researched, at the very least making you anecdotally correct.

Technically, anecdotally, and empirically. I'm the most correct man ever.
