Yeah, I just saw a graph that reckoned it was in the high 80s in 2006, so I'm deffo wrong.
I have no idea why, though.

Now I think about it, it was in the 70s when I was at law school, I'm sure. Which was 8 years ago, actually, so that would chime with your recollection.

Man, what the hell is wrong with my memory.

I commute 50 miles a day, and pay for petrol out of my own pocket. Fortunately I get fairly decent mpg out of the bike, but the prices rising aren't helping at all.

However! The council have decided to close a 2-mile long section of my commute, and there's no quick alternative. So now the diversion takes me miles out of the way before hooking round to the normal route, adding 7 miles to my journey each way. So an extra 70 miles a week out of my wallet there >:(

And I forgot my waterproof overpants today, so I'm soaked.

nynfortoo. I had a similar diverion a couple of weeks ago. One corner closed for a week meant an extra 10 miles a day. I didn't dare work out how much extra it was costing, rather I just bought cheaper sandwiches for a week.

I take a packed lunch :D

I soon stopped buying lunch when I realised how much that was costing. A simple fiver a day is £100 a month.

Lunchbox (I don't actually have a box, though) = cheapness

That's all fair enough, apart from the last line. Forgetting about the rest of the post, what if the family was poor, and had scraped together £1000 (say) for a pair of 3 litre Sierra's which they use for work. Three years later in 2008 their car tax and petrol cost a fortune, and they couldn't have predicted that. They can't sell the Sierra's now because no bugger wants a 3 litre, high-tax-band car, so they're shafted.

I don't know if this is the case elsewhere, but petrol's finally started dropping a bit around here. The (very) local garage (a Shell) dropped its unleaded price from 118.9 to 114.9 last week, and now it's 112.9. Clearly, it's not exactly news unless it drops under a quid again, but I was expecting 130-odd by now.

Coff. Yep, that's the case round here too - was 120 a fortnight ago, and is now 112.

It is, oil prices are at a 3 month low.

Although obviously that's still the highest 3 months ever by some distance.

Better yet, make it an audio recording, as it's even funnier as you get increasingly irate telling the story due to the foul memories it brings.

Because they bought a 3l Sierra instead of the myriad of other £1000 cars that would have been a much, much better idea?

A 1.6l Sierra for a start.

I knew someone was going say something like that. It's hardly the point, is it? They know now.
Anyway, that's only one point of my post, blah blah, back to WoS with you, blah.

[edit]And you didn't even read it properly - it's a £500 car, not a £1000 one. And that's so not the point anywa[explodes]

Mostly I was poking fun at my own extended family.

But if someone wants to swap a 3 litre Sierra with a year's MOT on it for my 1.1l Punto I'll take that.

Um, it was a one line post, if you've hidden other points in them.

Point is, it was a stupid car when they bought it, of course it's a stupid car now. I doubt there are many "families" in that predicament but they do pretty much deserve it if they are.

I usually just wear my Draggin' Jeans if it's not raining. If it is raining, or cold, I just wear a cheap pair of insulated waterproof pants. Nothing fancy.

I will ask them to try harder. I think the oven one qualifies as RAGE though. It even says RAGE, several times, in caps.

I was taken on a very long taxi ride to an airport in Denmark about eight years ago. On the way the driver took great pleasure in demonstrating a local set of controls to curb blatant high speeds on a straight road. On approaching a detector, your speed was clearly displayed if you were over the limit. If you were still going too quickly as you approached a second detector, some traffic lights turned to red just ahead. In the early days, apparently, the locals were prone to ignoring the lights so the authorities installed a camera. Consequently, if a culprit ignored everything, he would receive a ticket for three separate offences. I have to assume that this excellent arrangement is not deployed in the UK because it does not generate enough revenue.
That's an interesting idea. Sadly not revenue-generating, so unlikely to get used over here.

They do have those 'speed detector/display' things here, there's one along that road in Rhiwderin. There doesn't seem to be a camera attached or near it, though.

That's not the same thing though, those nagging signs are not calibrated to a legal standard. This scheme is more like having two GATSOs that don't prosecute, but instead switch the lights to red -- and then you get two speeding tickets if, and only if, you run the red light.

This is also why the much much safer, much more sensible average speed cameras are very rarely used. They help safety, not tax revenue.

And only complete fucking idiots get done by them... like those who speed up once they're past the camera and don't slow down until the next one, failing to understand what 'average' means.

Aren't the SPECS cameras very hard to spot though? And aren't the distances they work over a number of miles, which makes them quite hard to circumvent by slowing down / speeding up.

No, they're visible, they're still required to legally be. The hippie idiot argument against them and in favour of cash cams is the slightly insane "People could park for 5 minutes then drive the rest at 100" one.

The real arguements are simply that they cost more (you need more, obv) and people actually slow down rather than blunder through them in a cash generating way.

However, they're much, MUCH better at getting people to slow the fuck down with slamming on the brakes and causing accidents, or having to watch the speedo to make sure they're dead on the right speed.

Yeah, the cameras are quite small and blue, so they have to mount a big reflective yellow board behind them. They also put yellow signs before the start of the zone stating that you're entering an average-monitored area, but they're nigh-on invisible to anyone not in the very inside line. Sometimes they even say how long the zone is.

They must work by averaging between any two points along the way, otherwise there'd be no point putting more out than one at the start, after every entry slip and at the exit (they do).

Wasn't there some story about how cameras on one lane didn't talk to those on the other two? Meaning that if you passed the first camera in lane one and the last in lane three you could get away with it. Has been fixed now?

They're huge and yellow when they put them on the motorway. I thought the blue ones were traffic monitoring cameras?

Yeah, it has been fixed. I seem to recall that the Gvt weren't willing to pay for that bit of the software/system but have stumped up the cash.

They do have those 'speed detector/display' things here, there's one along that road in Rhiwderin. There doesn't seem to be a camera attached or near it, though.
That's not the same thing though, those nagging signs are not calibrated to a legal standard.

Those "nagging" signs that display your speed are great - they put one on a fast chicane near where I used to live, and we we're queuing up that weekend to see who could take it the fastest (my mates dad in a TVR Griffith, but only because it didn't detect motorbikes). They took the sign away again :(

Is this in any way related to you having a scrapped TVR for Bowler spares lying around? :ninja:

Here is the corner in question - it doesn't look like much, but the fact that you can't see the white lines because of the rubber left on it gives you a clue as to how fast everybody goes round it.
