News:

An online petition has been set up, asking people to pledge money to The Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria if Bono agrees to retire from public life, "so he'll stop leading misguided counter-productive philanthropy efforts".

The petition's organisers say: "[Bono's] RED campaign has managed to spend $40 million more on marketing that it has raised from RED product sales, while sending consumers a dangerous message. [Those] involved in the global fight against AIDS worry that RED will make it harder to raise funds, and [about] the oversimplified & disempowered image of Africa that Bono perpetuates. The grassroots leaders of the global fight against AIDS didn't ask for Bono to be their frontman. It's time for Bono to step down. We'll all pledge donations to the Global Fund, but no pledges are collected until Bono retires from public life. If he wants to moan bland melodies he'll have to do it quietly in his bedroom. If he wants to fight AIDS he can make a direct donation instead of buying a sweatshop GAP T-shirt. As the pledges grow, Bono will have to decide what matters more, fighting AIDS effectively, or him being the movement's frontman".

Make your pledge here if you'd like to: http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/bono- ... fight-aids

Interesting.

So has this website been set up/requested by "The grassroots leaders of the global fight against AIDS" then?

Or is this more about the fact that Bono is a bit annoying than any concern for people in Africa?

If he is "using up" a lot of goodwill and public support and money, and ultimately wasting it, when other, maybe less high profile people or organizations would have created better benefits, then he is a problem, not a help.

I might be speaking a bunch of arse here but surely by using his profile he actually has pushed certain causes up the agenda somewhat. Debt relief and such.

Yeah but he's done a lot of harm with his (product)(RED) brand that is designed so that giant multinationals can get their hands on some of that 'Socially-aware' audience's money, whilst not having to make any significant changes to their buisness ethics, because it's all kept within a single niche red product is cuntish.

Then when it turns out that the red companies spend over 5 times more (>$100m) advertising said products than they ever raise for the charities ($18m) means that it's incredibly cuntish.

Nothing but a hideous marketing manoeuvre so that companies like GAP can pretend they aren't exploitative bastards.
