Hi there I have the opportunity to pick up a Red Ring Xbox for £40. (premium version). Is it worth doing? Easy to fix? Even if I paid someone say £20 to fix it, it would be a good buy still. Anyone done this? |

There is an extended warrenty (apparently) on three red rings (not 1,2 or 4 RRs though). So couldn't you just send it off, or would you need a receipt. These are questions I do not know the answer too. |

a receipt isn't the problem, you have to register it at xbox.com, and then they look at the serial number to see the date.. |

Might be worth a punt I'll ask the guy if he registered it. Is it transferrable? Ie you buy a 2nd hand 360, if it breaks but is less than 3 years old, you get it fixed for free? I know the console in this instance is about 18 months or less old. |

I thought of it another way. Is a wireless controller, and a 20Gb hard drive worth £40? Because they just about are. So even if you couldn't get the console fixed you would lose money really, if you then picked up an arcade. I mean you could probably make most of that back selling them. |

At the very worst you'll get a HD for £40 which you could then stick on a 360 Arcade. Edit: yes, what Lave said. |

You could also use the internal cables and components to make techno jewellery. |

Do it. You should be able to get it repaired no problem. I've done several secondhand ones. |

Funny you mention this. I've just got my funsquare back from london and am endeavouring to fix its knackered DVD drive. Looks like a simple case of stabilising the spinny doodad so that the DVDs aren't wobbling over the laser. Samsung didn't bother doing it right, the cheap bastards. It's quite funny really - MS apparently made a big fuss about how easy it was to open and mod the original funsquare, so they made the superplus 'hard' to open. I got mine open in about twenty minutes with a run of the mill screwdriver and a pair of nail scissors, and even did it without visibly lifting the 'warranty void' seal. Idiots. I bought mine second hand, so the DVD drive thing wasn't covered (even though it's down to simple lazy manufacturing), and it would have cost £60 to send off and repair. Even if I have to buy a new drive, it'll be £20, and if the RROD comes up and/or the warranty seal is buggered, I'll simply go here. I've only browsed that site a little, but they seem very good and, though they are selling stuff, they seem to be honest about it and only selling things that are genuinely useful. They have a RROD fixing kit for £15. |

So the concensus is go for it? It includes a HD and cables but no controller, so that economic is out the window |

If you think you can handle the repairs mentioned on that article, and sell it for more than the equipment will cost you, go for it. |

I'll give you £75. No, but in that case, I'd go for it, personally. I paid more than that for mine and I'm an intractible cheapskate. |

Brand new Cores are £79.99 in Comet if that helps with any price perspective. |

Are they discounting Core packs heavily because they are likely to fail? |

I don't care, I have a spare HD and this would suit the JamesOff just fine if I found one. |

Was on DVDforums. Limited stock or something, and some said £109 on the box, but came through the till at £79.99. Cores are older ones, right? |
