So, CG, what's it like?

Super mega awesome?

C&C3 with new units?

Proper Red Alert?

Actually I'm masterfully not impressed. The beta mode provided is online play only, meaning you can only experience the game in a 1 vs 1 or 2 vs. 2 internet game, which makes it rather hard to explore the game when you're trying hard not to die immediately.

Aside from that, the graphics aren't terribly good. They seem a bit 'soft' and basic, and everything seems less distinctive than C&C 3, less real, less gritty. There's certainly no graphics engine improvement from what I can see.

There are loads of units to choose from but the thumbnails make it hard to make out what you're making and the interface is a bit too small. Somehow I'd hoped for more. Grumble.

Hmm. When does the beta end? If I nipped to town and got a copy of Kane's, will I get the beta straight away, now? I could fire it up in a 1 on 1 and we can have a gentlemen's agreement to explore, possibly.

IT HAD BETTER NOT BE RUBBISH.

Beta ends, afaik, mid-September sometime. I'm not sure what the delay is between registration and getting the beta :)

It's up to you though, I'd happily do a nice and slow 1 vs. 1 to get a better feel of it. The graphics are more an evolution of RA2 than C&C 3.

I was thinking of getting Wrath anyway, so now is as good a time as any. I'll probably look in to getting it some time this week.

Also : Make Ramsea get it.

The latest Kane's Wrath patch is terrifying, refineries are more expensive, loads of other things have been 'balanced' so they're either massively expensive or take longer to build. Scary stuff ;)

I've got a beta code from Kane's Wrath if anyone wants. I don't beta test games unless I'm being paid for it.

Thanks for that, Deano!

Much appreciated.

I wonder if I can be the first person to get the beta running in Linux, too ;)

*geek overload*

What's the difference between C+C and Red Alert these days then? I thought they were just iterations of the same game.

C+C has always been the far future between the usual "Post apocalypse" groups you get in these games, Red Alert is broadly current day with the allies vs Russia vs Japan etc.

There's been 3 games in each (Tiberium Dawn, Tiberium Sun, Tiberium Wars. Red Alert, Red Alert 2, Red Alert 3)

(All of them had expansion packs too).

Generals is a seperate reality.

Where does C+C Retaliation fit in?

I had to look up what that was. It was a compilation of the 2 expansion packs for the first Red Alert game.

Wasn't the first Red Alert game an expansion pack of the first C&C? I'm confused.

Nope. Red Alert was a stand-alone.

I know it was standalone, but wasn't it called "Command & Conquer: Red Alert" or something? Not exactly an expansion pack, but more of a sequel.

Correct.

Command and Conquer : Tiberium series and Command and Conquer : Red Alert series are two distinct "universes".

Command and Conquer : Generals is a third.

Command and Conquer : Renegade is set in the Red Alert universe.

Hang on, has the name Tiberian Dawn been retconned into the series to make sure it all looks nice and tidy? I never remember it being called that back in the day.

Nope, here's an archive.org of Westwood's homepage in 1997.

Well, I had a boxed copy of the first game and it didn't have Tiberium Dawn on it anywhere.

Which doesn't mean it wasn't called it.

Reading FAQs it seems that they started calling it by its subtitle around about 1997 when they released it for Windows.
