Not to derail the thread, but good for you - that's a reasoned resonse I can't automatically agree nor disagree with, and thus a debate is born. On UK Hippy the whole argument can be summed up by "BUT IT'S HUMAN RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHTS" and people who bang on about rights all day are worse than/the same as those who do not use their riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiights wisely.

I tried to explain that whether we are talking Beeyenpee or radical Islam (bomb england placards in london, etc...) there's an illogical situation when 'freedom of speech' is used to advocate violence and revolution which would end freedom of speech. Take a child on holiday, and because he is on his hols, he can have whatever he wants to eat - burger and coke followed by more ice cream than god could manage - fine. But if he wants to eat a dog shit he's found, or a big bar of poison, you'd step in and stop him because giving people freedom is not universally a good idea. Another right is the right to education - when one message is hyper-agressive others cannot get through and that is not education, that is brainwashing.

And so on...

I was semi-active in Amnesty International for two years*, and I did find this to an extent among my fellow, um, Amnestinians. I do think that there are awkward questions about rights that we often just refused to address, and difficult questions that we tended to ignore, so I suppose I slightly agree with you. But at the same time a lot of people passionate about human rights are extremely knowledgeable about them, and certainly don't use them for their own nefarious means; it's just that we do tend to oversimplify things some of the time.

*I drew poor quality posters for them and accidentally destroyed the creative director's cardboard postbox. I'm not proud.



Well, I'd only really agree with that if not surpressing speech posed a substantial threat to freedom of speech as a whole. I'm not convinced that it does, and if it doesn't I do think people should be allowed to say awful and destructive things. I think Amnesty doesn't hold that universal free speech is acceptable, and that when it blatantly infringes on other human rights then it isn't always a good thing, but I'm reluctant to say that I'd support withdrawing it unless I was sure there was a good reason for it.

I'd totally kill HippyUK, though. It sounds awful.

(As an aside, a terribly, terribly amusing thing has been happing on a site I mod. Basically a guy who was all "freedom of speech, you can't censor anything! Ever!" has had a truly embarassing YouTube video posted and everyone has taken the piss relentlessly. He's skulked off to his MySpace and alternated between offensive messages about the people who posted it and complaining about the mods not taking it down.)

This. Careful ridicule can render a foaming fascist's blatherings impotent where censoring them would give them an air of iconoclastic legitimacy.

My favourite is the "you can't even call it a 'blackboard' anymore!!!2", which is not only utter bullshit, but irrelevant anyway because there haven't been more than maybe eight or nine schools in the country still using blackboards since about 1999.

No! Without that, I'd never have watched about twenty episodes of Monkey Dust, or any of Penn and Teller's Bullshit (which recently got zapped for copryight. Wankers), or heard of Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip. It's worth the shite - you can just ignore the rubbish bits.

I can't understand why they haven't yet implemented a system whereby people who attract negative rated comments from over a certain amount or percentage of people are banned from using comments.

This could be done automagically, with a process to appeal if a whole forum decided to gang up and negative rate one person's comments (for example). It would make the whole site a damn site more useable.
