I haven't seen one for about 20 years. I used triumph herald bits - partly because I managed to get a whole chassis from someone just up the road, and partly because the bits are fairly common and some parts are still manufactured for something like the caterham (which the locost is sort of a copy of).

Having a spare TVR and Range Rover lying around is probably about as expensive as people are thinking. :DD

The Range Rover isn't "lying around", it's my Range Rover. People on Land Rover forums are already telling me off for describing it as a "rolling chassis".
Also, the TVR engine is fucked. It's from a written off TVR that hit a wall - caused by the engine seizing up. I'll have a shot at getting it fixed, but I'll probably have to stick with the Rover V8.

Oooh - cool. My Dad's a massive Triumph Herald nut, having owned half a dozen of them when he was a youngster. So he may be of use, then.

The Caterham 7 and Lotus 7 are both, basically, the same car, aren't they?

Yeah, I think so. Caterham tends to have a big Ford engine in it though.

If I did it I'd be sticking in as big an engine as possible. Honda Fireblade has been done, and works well, apparently.

The other option is to save up and actually just buy a Caterham - they customise quite well for you, and can provide in varying degrees of assembledness.

Ultimately I still want to buy one of those kit Spitfire replica aeroplanes though. Whoosh!

One of the things at that airshow I went to at the weekend was a *microlight* plane which looked fairly like a spitfire. A German all composite thing - pretty amazing considering that a normal microlight looks something like a large kite with the "pilot" hanging underneath with a fan strapped to his back.
Presumably there are cost and license benefits to it being a microlight, as well as having a tiny engine for cheap running.

It's a full size homebuilt FW190.

Caterham bought the rights and stuff to keep making the Lotus 7, so they're the "proper" ones. Though there are also Westfields.

I'd love to have even a basic garage, I mean just a big shed with a wide door and a roof on it. Trying to do anything on a gravel driveway or worse, the roadside is a huge barrier to getting anything going. Imagine not getting rained on, having all the tools there by the workbench. Gosh, imagine having a workbench...

I always wondered why they didn't spend a little more time doing a less awfully drawn hand for that.

I downloaded this:
http://www.dynolicious.com/

..earlier but it's bugged to hell at the moment. I mean it works but the calibration facility doesn't, which is a bit pants.

If they fix it and enable you to upload your car data to a website of some sort, it'll be amazing...

That's pretty impressive. Presumably there's no way of using that on a jailbroken iPhone that doesn't have the 2.0 firmware?

Correct, but if you upgrade to 2.0 (jailbroken, unlocked) using the 'pwnage' tool first, and you'll be able to run the appstore apps.

Note 1: there's a similar app called g-tac which is much cheaper and does much the same thing.

Note 2: if you're upgrading to 2.0, bear in mind that very few of the existing installer apps have been ported for 2.0 (some of them are in appstore though). And, 2.0 seems to be a tinch slower and crashier than 1.1.4 in general unfortunately.

Yeah I have mixed feelings about having upgraded it. But hey, that's life on the cutting edge :)
