Sorry chap, it was only meant in jest. You can't blame yourself for doing/not doing anything you did/didn't do. It all happens so fast that you have to work on instinct, and by all accounts you did the best you could.

I know, I'm not offended, but it's true - after any unpleasant incident like this you can't help but start thinking about all the little decisions that could have avoided it happening. What if we'd ignored the heat and stayed in the pub for one more? What if she hadn't crossed to the street to look in that shop window? What if we'd gone down the stairs and walked along the castle moat instead of along the street?

So, in retrospect, I do sorta wish I'd not gone out that night.
