Sorry this is late - I fell asleep last night with everything still up and running, radio on, still dressed :S

And so the third Eurovision style vote for this fortnight's photography challenge on the subject 'Glass' is (finally) launched.

How the eurovision style vote works

It couldn't be simpler. Really, it couldn't. Decide which are your favourite three pictures, in order. In the poll click on the link that matches your MOST favourite picture (which will get three points), then, after that, click the link that corresponds to your SECOND favourite picture (which will receive two points), and then the third (one point). You MUST click in that order though favourite>second favourite>third favourite.

Simple dimple, yes?

Oh, and you can't click 'photo X' three times and award it all six points, that would be cheating! (and it is set up to prevent this, anyway... :P)

Four is the picture I wanted to take, but the weather was always too crappy.

I took photo three. Except it's still on my phone, so someone else has the exact same photo as me!

I like the strange quality of the bulb.

Mmm - I loved the bulb. I voted for 3, 4, and 6, but I can't remember in which order.

You know those times when you want to say something, but figure that it would just cause drama, so you don't?

Six, Seven and Two were my choices. Brilliant stuff.

Number eight makes me laugh.

I'll vote a bit later, but the ones sticking in my heed are the building and the bulb.

Wow, I walk past photo one all the time! But I didn't vote for it, as that would be an inane reason.

Photo six I think is really strong this round; it's very well composed indeed.

I can't work out how photo six is made, it's really interesting - the bulb appears to be floating, and the glass looks like liquid water, or like the glass has melted and warped over the surface.

I really like the collection of marbles though.

I am undecided as yet.

I assumed that it's had water poured into it and has then been resealed. I'm not sure how the floating works, though; perhaps there's something holding it up below the fixing. Or it could have been dropped and taken with a fast shutterspeed, which would explain why the water seems to be joshing about quite a lot.

Oh, I didn't see that it might be full of water.

Oh well, it's very interesting. It may get one of my votes.

4, 6, 3 for me - I voted for them in that order, but it could've been a different order on another night - they're all excellent for different reasons. I think it might've been the sheer scale of 4 that made me put it above the others; 6 is really interesting (still not sure how it was done) and 3 is just a cool picture.

I went for 7,4 and 6 in the end.

I think that the perspective and use of glass in 7 is ace. 4 is a good building shot and I love the light, but the lampost distracts slightly for me. 6 is interesting and otherworldly, and I like it a lot. It does seem a bit weird though, whatever effects have been done to it given it an almost 'drawn' quality. Apologies if no effects were used and it just came out that way.

:)

Good showing, people!

Okay - I like the marbles, and I also like the shot looking into the glass, because I like the ram's head showing through the bottom of the glass.

Actually, I really like the one looking into the glass for that small detail, so that gets my top vote, then marbles and bulb.

8, 6 and 3 for me.

Poor 1 has no points at the moment.
With hindsight, I wish I'd given them a patronising point or two. ;)

I was going to vote for two but for the fact that when we used to play marbles at school, cat's eyes (the marbles in question) were lowest in the pecking order.

They were particularly despised if they were chipped in any way, like they are in the picture.

For completeness, the milky looking marbles (called chinkies, political correctness had not arrived at my school at this point) came next, followed by the pearl marbles (pearlies) with the oil effect marbles (predictably called oilies) being the best. Steel marbles were also highly prize but were banned due to an unfortunate window smashing incident.

Here concludes this fascinating insight into my childhood.

We called the milky ones "ozzies" for some reason, there's probably loads more variants out there, depending on where you grew up. The normal marbles were "littlies", but there were "biggies" as well, which were worth a lot more (due to their scoring power - a big marble rolls much straighter over an uneven playground). Steelies (basically just ball bearings in varying sizes, direct from British Steel just down the road) weren't banned, but they were effectively useless as nobody would set up a game to have them all taken out by a worthless steely.

Of course, "moonies" and "swirlies" were the ones everyone wanted.

I remember far too much about marbles, I think.

Sorry, Number 3! Pipped again.

Mine was number 6. It's a bulb filled with blue food colouring, shaken about, then dropped and captured. I made a right mess.

Note to self: don't play with food colouring on a cream carpet.

Cheers for your votes! :D

Mine was number three! I came second! I win! Yay!

I'm quite surprised, actually. I have different tastes in photos than most people here.

My little Marvel Zombies photo that I love got almost no votes a while back, now this photo I think is a bit rubbish comes second.

But, still - yay! Thanks for your votes, everyone.

Well done to all those participating. I do so enjoy seeing the pics, even the ones I don't vote for.

Go Mafiascum tag team! *fist bump*

I really don't know whether I should have cropped it to just the glass, but then I'd have to shop the little bit of black out at the bottom. And I like the effect on the shadow of the sun. The black thing is an "Emmerdale" beer mat from Black Sheep Brewery - the rams head was just the right size.

I voted for 6 for its otherworldly quality, 4 because it is the shot I would have taken given a chance (though Curio is right about the lamppost) and 8, because it made me laugh - Beaker, in a beaker!

I really liked yours, and gave it my top vote. It was very simple, and the only hint you gave of it being glass was the crack, which is a brilliant idea :)

Thanks, Curiosity :)

I voted yours into the lead after the poll closed. Sorry mang. I hasten to add that I didn't know it was yours as well as not knowing the poll had closed.

I just liked the elegant simplicity of it.

Mine was four!

Funny thing is, I took a photo without the lampost and then figured that the corner looked too empty. Tried it with the lampost and I liked the way it sort of reared up like a snake and angled smoothly against the angle of the building. So I chose that one.

Looks like I made a skoolboy errur there. B'oh!

Congrats to Mr Blue Lightbulb, it was my top choice too. Can't seem to see the final votes though - where did I come?

Don't know why you can't see the final votes. Did you vote yourself?

Anyway, here they are:
PICTURE ONE 0 points
PICTURE TWO 19 points
PICTURE THREE 45 points
PICTURE FOUR 35 points
PICTURE FIVE 7 points
PICTURE SIX 43 points
PICTURE SEVEN 36 points
PICTURE EIGHT 25 points

Another close one! I think the Rev Owen's was the first entry and it looked a likely winner from the off, but as it turned out any of the top four would've been a worthy first place.

Mine was the marbles, it was a nice idea but it didn't really turn out the way I wanted (or more accurately, I couldn't figure out how to do it). There was supposed to be more light coming through from behind, but in the end the marbles were too dense (or maybe too small) to allow much through. Still, it was fun messing about with it and I probably learned something about taking photos along the way, so all good.
