I'll get my girlfriend a game for her birthday, along with the secret "surprise" item. She has a DS and a Wii, but a DS game will be more practical at the moment. As she can play her DS in bed.

She likes Animal Crossing, Picross DS, Phantom Hourglass and Mario Kart DS. Liked Tetris DS too, Ridge Racer DS and 42 ATC. But not Nintendogs or that Tingle game. I don't think she got on with Polarium either.

So, anything worth a look? She never reads the forums I post to, so the game she gets, she won't expect.

Harvest Moon perhaps?

If she likes a fun little cartoon adventures and puzzles as well then Professor Layton and teh Curious Villiage is a great game.

:this:

It is the only game my girlfriend has ever completed. I didn't see my DS for two weeks!

Also lost in blue (1,2 or 3) is apparently quite good.

Yeah, I think Layton is an excellent choice here.

The Midnight Party pack would be choice 2, excellent versions of every kind of solitare like card game, a breakout clone, pool and poker in one handy cartridge sized er...well anyway.

Yeah, Layton seems the way forward to me too.

But for some reason that list of games makes me think she'ld like Advance Wars too.

But yeah, get Layton.

Pic-Pic is a nice collection of Picross-ish puzzles.

Does she like fun things? Because if she does then Phoenix Wright is a must-have.

Oh yeah, PW is a great idea. But you do want to get them in order. The plot (which is great) continues.

Yeah, I missed out Phoenix Wright because they're MUCH better in order (which is why it's really fucking stupid they never released number 3 here) and 1 is quite rare now.

3's on its way to Britain.

Which means I'll get 4 2nd hand and they'll lose out. The idiots.

Strange - I was going to ask on here the other day if anyone knew which order they went in? I couldn't find any info through a google search.

According to Zavvi's website it's been deleted! Madness!

SoftUK claim to have it in stock for £12.49 though (Gamestracker affiliate link to get free shipping).

Mimi: the order is:

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (released in the UK but deleted)
Phoenix Wright: Justice For All (released in the UK)
Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations (UK release due in October apparently)
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (released in the UK)

The Japanese versions of the first three have the same English translation as the Western releases so if all else fails you can always trying picking up cheap import copies. The Japanese version of Apollo Justice doesn't have the English version though.

I couldn't wait, and imported them. Sadly I sold them on after completion as they held their value really well.

Digested all other suggestions, and this sounds most logical I think.

Harvest Moon I should've mentioned earlier (my bad) - she tried and disliked it. So we swapped it for Mario Kart. Layton doesn't look her thing either.

Zookeeper would be a great idea, but it's sadly impossible to find these days.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions anyway.

She doesn't like plots in games. ;)

cex.co.uk have a few second-hand copies available for a tenner at the moment. Alternatively, there are a few more "match 3"-based games available for the DS now which you might be able to get hold of instead: Puzzle Quest, 7 Wonders, Jewel Quest Expeditions, Cradle of Rome etc.

I really can't tell if that was a sense of humour failure on my part or you've actually managed to be irritated by that comment.

Oh, Dudley was only joking, MrX!

Seriously, though - I can't imagine anyone not liking Dr Layton - it is FULL of great puzzles and hardly has a plot - well, the plot is a one of the puzzles in a way - but if your lady really does like puzzlers I can't see how it could go wrong :) Maybe read a bit more about it? Everyone I know who's played it has thought it was the most charming game and there's some great puzzles in it.

As if by magic, LewieP has just found the first Phoenix Wright game for £12.50.

And it's barginous at that price.

I actually have two copies of the game as it ended up that me and the GF both liked it so much.

Sorry everyone. Dudley too.

Don't want to be all excuse-y, but I felt extremely miserable last night as I has pretty bad breathing problems. This morning I had to call an ambulance (or, NHS Direct called one for me) as I had an asthma attack, which was a bit terrifying as I've never had one before. All OK now, and much more relaxed now.

I'll look into the Layton game in the mean time, OK. ;)

If you find the site, you can play two or three demo puzzles from the game in flash.

yes, indeedy.

And Anonymous X, don't worry, we all have off days - I am really having a horrible day myself, now, so I am really fed up with everything, and Dudley's skin must be as thick as elephant leather by now.
