Bad luck man... mine went last week but in all fairness, Microsoft had it back to me in a little over a week! I sent it on the Monday and it came back the following Tuesday.

Ideally we'd like a console that didn't break.. but it's good to know you can get it sorted relatively easily.

You should get yours back sooner than I did, as Germany isn't as far away from you.

What makes you think your 360 went to Germany? I doubt it. I'm pretty sure they ship them to Havant, then do a mobo/other broken bit swap there, then send the box back. Meanwhile the broken mobo gets shipped to Germany or wherever to be repaired, returned, and put into the next broken 360.

Well, the delivery address on the label you print out being in Frankfurt is probably the biggest clue ;)

Except, as with Dudley, the address I got wasn't in Frankfurt, but rather in Havant.

Had a very weird graphical glitch on CoD4 last night which carried on back to the dashboard. 2 levels of grey where being displayed as bright blue or a redish purple (and kinda like jpg artifacts but not quite). I shit myself, made sure the video cable was attached corectly (it was) rebooted the box, then everything was fine again.

Precisely. Then again, given it's shipped with UPS, it probably did go to 'Havant'.

Well, mine has arrived back today and they've fixed the DVD drive too! Woo!

Thumbs up to Microsoft and UPS for a pretty speedy recovery, there.

Did your DVD drive make an alarming 'GRRRRIINKKKK!' noise every time you switched on the 360, and similarly mungy noises when it was working on a new disc?

I am delighted that they noticed it and replaced mine.

Yeah, those were the symptoms. It also refused to load a game if I left a disc in the tray after watching a movie in the HD-DVD player. Haven't tried that yet to see if they've fixed it, but I reckon they probably have. The tray on the new DVD drive shoots out like a bat out of hell.

Um... a lot of old machines dropping means they haven't sorted it?

Not saying you're not right but I'm not seeing the evidence you're basing that on.

Launch machine still fine here. (*touches wood*)

they have sorted it out, its just theres about 10 million of the fuckers that are still dodgy in the world.
I wonder if my RROD poll has made any of these xbox 360 deaths through sheer curse.

That's deeply unfortunate, and I am sympathetic.

Silver lining though: you have been getting more disc errors than anyone else (whom I know of), ever since you got it. Perhaps this will be a blessing in disguise. Who knows, being without it for a week or two might lead you to rediscover Console X or something. Still sucks mightily, of course.

Many folks will tell you on here that an RROD followed by it booting up fine is the warning sign.

I'm not convinced. I had an RROD well over a year ago followed by a long period of fault-free operation.

It's only if it takes a LOT of tries before it'll start fine that you know for sure you're fucked.

The last point. Constantly this morning after a brief 30 minute forza session, unplugged and left under the desk the rest of the day, now boots again. Meh, it's going back and some LOVELY person has offered me a lend of their box for the period it takes for mine to be returned.

A thought occurs. Haven't Microsoft now increased the warranty on all 360s to three years now? With that in mind, for anyone with a 360 coming up to it's third birthday, surely it would be worth actually inducing a RROD? Wrapping it in a towel, loading up some activity-heavy title, then leaving it for several hours, that sort of thing. For me, I've still got about 16 months of warranty left (and going by the disc errors I've been getting from GTA4, I'll need it), but it's a thought.

Yes, you could also pinch a 360 from a shop if you're fond of stealing, which is what you'd be doing.

I'm assuming you're being sardonic, here. But just in case you're not: sigh. Having a small (and poorly designed) component in an expensive consumer item you've legitimately purchased replaced is not the same as stealing something from a shop. As well you know, because you were being sarky, you scamp.

No, I'm being serious thanks.

You're breaking a working product to get a free replacement, effectively stealing the replacement. (Or at least whatever bits they change)

Your arguement by posting that link appears to be that you "have permission to take it", ok but only because you lied to them. I'll accept "Yes, obtaining property by deception is aces" then but that's an awfully long crime name to avoid some minor debatable semantics with the word stealing.

Not to mention it's a pretty daft plan anyway, you're going to take an xbox that's worked for 3 years and deliberately break it, in order to receive a replacement which is likely to live much less long.

they will be picking it up today, but the service looks quite professional with the labels and stuff, so that's okay, hopefully the weather will be so good (it has been raining here for yonks now), i won't be missing it..

so they send them even from canada to germany? mine says frankfurt, interestingly it also contains the names of two germans.. would the label already say who is going to repair it? Go Robert&Robert then!

When an xbox is repaired for rrod does that mean it will be less vulnarable for RRoD in the future?

Had hoped mine would be too new anyway, i asked when buying it,and told me the halo-3 ones were rather new (but i discovered twomonths ago from a thread at WoS that the labels said 327watt orsomething, which meant it was one of the vulnarables)

(i packed it without hdd, wifithing and powerstuff, that was the idea' wasn't it?)

You're forcing a component with known and widely reported reliability issues to fail before rather than after the warranty expires. If it was just some sporadic issue, fine, but it's an acknowledged design flaw - if something like this was found in a car, they would (and should) issue a full product recall to fix it.

Romanista...... That's the idea.. they don't need any leads, Hard drives, disks or anything. Just the console! It said in my instructions that you wouldn't get anything back if you sent it in.. I must have checked the drive about 15 times in a semi OCD kind of way.

Hopefully it will be back with you soon.. Since mine has come back, it seems quieter! That's a good thing.. although, it may mean that they forget to connect a fan and it's just melting inside.

Sounds like it's going to the same place as mine. The Robert guy must be some poor bastard with serious carpal tunnel for all the signing of invoices as yet another UPS truck arrives filled with a comedy selection of improvised boxes with 360s inside.

(above) UPS trucks queuing outside the Microsoft facility in Frankfurt to deliver broken 360s, yesterday.

Pack absolutely nothing except the 360 itself. Remove all the cables, HDD, wifi adaptor, memory cards, games.
