Hobbyking have a sale on for the next few days on car related stuff. Got myself the sensored brushless combo I linked above for £36 & postage. I'll be getting my Capri running as a touring car and get my Toyota Trueno set up as a drifter again.

Bought some more props for my Corsair Funfighter. Different size and supposed to give longer flight times at the expense of speed (thank fuck :D) and very importantly they're supposed to be less brittle so fingers crossed I don't break them so often.

I've now decided on what I'm gonna get.

Nissan Titan Nismo racing truck.

It's £50 more than the lunchbox but it looks amazing. Much newer design. Comes with the ESC too for sure. Got a few other bits lined up I will post it all on Friday after I've made sure everything is ordered :)

Really excited about this. It will get me out of the house more (even if it's alone lol) and I'll have miles and miles of sand to race it on :D

Probably the best way to increase your flight times would be to stop crashing it into the ground all the time.

choose the fastest shipping and they should be there by Friday.

Where else is good for RC car stuff at reasonable prices?

I'm a tiny bit nervous about buying anything other than Tamiya, but I guess these days parts are avaiable for everything, right?

Spares can be an issue but the worst that happens is that you'll be left with a wait for parts from their international warehouse. However in terms of value for money for something to just thrash around I think there's no contest. Tamiyas are more expensive to buy and then you still need to throw away the silly old brushed motors and ESCs they come with.

They are lovely to build, but yes I wouldn't buy another Tamiya off roader. Those Quanum Vandals give far mor bang for the book.

Nothing as long as the ones they use now will do brushless motors.

Ugh. Well, at least it will run as is and I can pick up another ESC at a later date and fit the motor I'm ordering then.

The car comes ball raced so I don't have to worry about that :)

So the glue with the plain white tube which I thought was the foam glue that came with one of my planes was actually just one part of a two part epoxy resin. That'll be why it didn't work then.

Well, the saltwater from last year clearly fucked all of the metal bits in the Tamiya chassis (TT01 from memory. Or TL01. Something like that). Yay. The old TA01 chassis also needs a new motor mount so I can't use that. AND it looks like the waterproof ESC wasn't. Or at least didn't like salt water.

Need to find a new RC car now...

And not drive it through sea water.

Current potentials are:

The third one I may just pick up from Antics tomorrow morning after I pick up the 1:1 scale car from the garage. Although I suspect I'll get told off.

1st two are very cheap but only 1:12. Might struggle on rough ground? Third one looks good but only brushed motor.

I'd suggest you get a Quanum Vandal from hobby king along with a brushless motor and ESC combo (would be roughly £100). Bags of fun and really take some hammer.

Plus radio gear plus battery plus charger... adds up, really. I can't really justify a couple of hundred on one car, sadly.

Could get the BSD and then later upgrade it... That said, the old TA01 with traditional Tamiya brushed can and mechanical SC was always a good laugh. Who needs these fancy modern brushless lipoly nonsense!

If you don't want to spend much then that first one from Hobby King looks a better bet than any of those. I thought you had some planes, don't you already have a LiPo charger of some description?

Post subject:  Re: Radio controlled aeroplanes, and that... and now cars!

I have a Parkzone SuperCub, which I've been happily running off NiMhs.

The reviews of that HK one I've seen said it's fairly hard to keep in a straight line on any sort of loose surface, as it's RWD with all the weight mid mounted. It also needs a very specific battery as HK have deisgned the battery tub to only fit one pack type (which the UK warehouse don't currently have in stock)

However, if I don't get the BSD one today (it was mainly in the running as it was in the model shop in Stroud) I'll probably order the HK Sand Storm thing.

Ha! Mrs K has gone and bought the BSD buggy...

Will order the HK one in a couple of weeks, so we've got two to take up to Scotland with us.

Post subject:  Re: Radio controlled aeroplanes, and that... and now cars!

So the bloke at the model shop talked Mrs K into buying the FTX Carnage, which is a truggy version of the FTX Vantage which is actually a Quanum Vandal - so ultimately we've ended up following Z's advice... :D

Comes with brushed and NiMhs but will get LiPos and a brushless upgrade in due course.

Surely you could just stick a lump of plasticine in the battery bay, give it a push and the magnets you put on the wheels would do the rest?

OK so I changed my mind again. After a long hard think I decided to go with this.

Image

Basically the Tamiya Titan comes with a crap ESC, crap motor and isn't ball raced. By the time I change them to something even half reasonable I would have spent more money. The Cougar was £196 btw. Here are the parts I got to go with it. Note, there's nothing brushless or lipo in sight but that's no problem as it gives me something to look forward to and something to upgrade to (so I can tinker).

Very nice from what I've read, but you could get a 4x4 Quanum Vandal / brushless combo / radio gear / LiPo and charger from Hobbyking for the same money.

Author:  JohnCoffey [ Fri May 29, 2015 13:03 ]
Post subject:  Re: Radio controlled aeroplanes, and that... and now cars!

I spent £140 on everything else other than the car. The radio will work with brushless.

Don't forget £20 of that was on tyres. Then there's a hex nut driver etc.

From what I'm hearing about brushless motors I'm a little scared. Apparently they hate water, and the beach is covered with puddles.

Also dude, you have to remember I have never used lipo or brushless before.

It doesn't matter, in four weeks time I'll be buying all that stuff any way :)

Edit. For example the motor was £10, controls £34, charger £21 (mains) and batteries £14 each. There's no way I could have afforded brushless and lipo for that.

Edit again. Ohhh I see! You mean like everything in a combo. Yeah I looked at those but I've always wanted a schuey of my own. As a kid I couldn't afford one mostly because an esc was £90 then and you couldn't fit a standard speed controller so a mate of mine with rich parents used to loan me one of his cats for racing.

Post subject:  Re: Radio controlled aeroplanes, and that... and now cars!

It'll be a nice buggy mate. Don't want to be negative just saying rather than upgrade (like I did at first) you could go brushless / LiPo from the start.

All motors hate salt water too :)

Post subject:  Re: Radio controlled aeroplanes, and that... and now cars!

I couldn't afford to really dude. I'd have been looking at over £600.

Then of course there's this with the Vandal that would have really put me off..

Image

Just hoping I can get my head around it, because the instruction manual is quite daunting. It's odd how they are showing it going together, yet not telling you the part numbers etc. Hoping it's easier than it looks :)

Author:  Zardoz [ Fri May 29, 2015 16:23 ]
Post subject:  Re: Radio controlled aeroplanes, and that... and now cars!

£600?

Mark and I have ran our Vandals with very little trouble for two years now. Had to replace slipper clutch and spur gear... and wear and tear stuff like tyres, shells. Parts are pence for them and available everywhere.

Anyway I'll stop banging on about them now. Enjoy your buggy JC, sure it won't be your last :)

Nope definitely won't be the last. I live four miles from Ford Airfield and there are three ww2 runways still there so I also want an on roader.

Car is coming today. I've ordered a reasonably large bottle of shock oil, Tamiya spanner and thread lock and they're all here. I downloaded the manual for the car and that was all it suggested I would need but I see an awful lot of Allen bolts on the car so I just hope it comes with an Allen key.

If not I'll have to go out later today and get one.

Took the car up for a thrash on the Common - for a brushed car it goes some.

Of course the cows are out, so I then spent half an hour cleaning liquidised cow shit out of it afterwards...

Spent last night building a DT-02 out off the two non runners I have. But had the same main broken part on both! Managed to glue it back together for now while a spare comes from Japan (worryingly little spares available locally). Had it cogging on 3S but running fine on 2S battery so leaving it at that.

Well my car came on Monday.

Truth be told I did not realise that a RC car could possibly ever be this complicated. It took me five hours just to build the front end. I don't regret it though. Even the steering joints and so on are all ball raced and then held in with carbon fibre pieces :)

That's where I was at before yesterday, when I started the build of the gearbox, clutch and diff. The diff is a bit of a sod....
