Well I may be overreacting because I used to do a lot of exactly this with Gran Turismos 1 and 2 back in the glory days of the then independent granturismo.com and learnt a hell of a lot because there wasn't any "OMG but how will I protect my advantage!" :)

I stuck to the lower level offline racing leagues on granturismo.com where everyone just promised to honestly do a clean five lap race versus the AI and post genuine race times. The Serious People Leagues all had some kind of download cart requirement to get proof off the playstation onto pc.

Yes, those could fuck off.

Also I didn't know you were on there. Yes, I'm that Dudley too.

It's a different forum these days but if you're not still around you'll find most of the same people at http://www.gtxf.net

OK, quick fiddle myself (missus), basically equalising the front and back settings in most cases gave me a 45.229.

Now to try Mr Snappa's stuff.

44.587. How much from the setup and how much through re-acquiring skills I've lost in 6 months not playing I don't know, especially as I struggled to match my own setup at first.

No assists and joypad btw.

That's going to be an imponderable though. There's an element that you could get better by yourself. There's a danger when handed what you think is a panacea that you will overdo things and have to relearn the track and car anyway. You could argue that anything you apply that makes you approach things from a fresh angle will alter the way you play and that may be for the better. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the car is not ideally suited for racing and no amount of tuning is going to turn it into a benign on rails lap record beast.

Bottom line is that you're 6-7/10ths of a second faster - anything that helps helps - why the fuck am I defending my tuning devices when you guys play this game far more than I do and I'm never going to get close to your times with this car and tune. :attitude:

It does seem to be a theme with this forum that you can't suggest something casual, fun and informal without it being whisked away and have a million rules and SERIOUSNESS glued to it by home time. :attitude:

That's hardly unique to this forum, that statement could be applied to all walks of life. Add people == hell, to paraphrase Sartre. Bottom line, we're all fundamentally competitive selfish cunts when you scratch the veneer away. It may be a crass analogy but it's worth nodding at.

Anyway, this'll be fine. Some of us will take it more seriously than others and part of that seriousness will manifest itself in forthright opinions on how it should be done online here. I propose we just do it and see how it pans out. The success of the entire endeavour cannot be measured when we haven't finished the first bloody week, no?

Are you sure? Don't know whether I can be arsed to look at the Forza's site as my connection seems to be going through one of it's inexplicably slow periods.... I'll reBOOT my modem in a mo.... yup, you're right.

The Forza site doesn't have the time I did yesterday when I got booted offline, which is about 44.833 or soemthing like that.

I think the car is fine, and reminds me a lot of other racing sims which don't flatter the player so much.

Just had another go across lunchtime and I improved quite a bit by relaxing and concentrating.

So, wheel and pedals, all assists off apart from the racing line.

43.975

Yup. That was all hard work, making up for, like you, not having played the game for months and months. Don't think I'll better that, but will have another couple of cracks at AABs time before the end of the challenge.

When I was playing lunchtime today I noticed that if you select the identity of anybody on the leaderboard there are options to download ghosts and even car set-ups. That should, in a single blow, remove any questions of people gaining secret advantages by cunning use of tuning. It won't do the lap for you though, natch

That is only true for the people who allow their tuning to be uploaded to the game...although ghosts and replays are always available. (Edit. Due to my dad calling around the house mid-post, MarkG beat me to it.)

I had a few goes earlier on today and couldnt beat AAB using no assists (not sure if thats cos Im not really used to using no ABS or whether AAB is just a plain ace) however switching on ABS I managed to get a 43.350 on my 6th lap which was pretty good.

I wouldnt be surprised if AAB bettered that before too long tho, esp. since there were little bits where I could have done better.

DBSnappa, I didnt realise you could change all them tuning options on this particular arcade time trial...I'm sure I could only change tire pressure on mine?

I think it depends on a car by car basis, but I'm speculating here. Anyway, the only things you can't change on this car are, I think, aero downforce and something to do with the brakes.

You can't change the brake balance, which is absurd. I can change the brake balance on my Mazda, ffs.

I only did that recently I think, in a Esprit V8 I boosted enough to get the power up. Events are a bit random to measure against anyway.

I suppose, but at least it had some kind of restriction, unlike the earlier events.

Ooh. I don't have that one yet. I don't have a Ferrari within any kind of range of the one you have to beat to win that. If I'm remembering the event correctly.

One of the best things about racing in Nascar Racing 2003 was the day the Ferrari 330 mod was released :)

I might have a go at winning that tonight. It's a beautiful car.

I can't believe you're 8/10ths of a second quicker than me. I just can't do it any quicker.

He's only 8/1000ths quicker than me...swine.

Nice lap chap...I'm gonna have to have another crack at it now. (At this rate we'll be 1 and 2 in the world before Friday!)

bicycle stabilizers FTFY :D

The world record is over a second faster. I didn't mess with the setup much. I set the final drive to 4.65, and the acceleration diff to 30, deceleration to 55 (because I'd read some vague guide that suggested those on some other car). I keep finding a faster line on the first hairpin- having your own ghost on is really helpful I found, as you can see when you have done better on a turn. My previous best had a moment of sliding in it, so I knew there could be better.

I did my current record on lap 15 of the session I was in. I checked the tire temps and they stayed green, except when I'd spun up the wheels too much after crashing or whatever.

Edit- we've brought BEEX into the 500s worldwide for that time trial. I think with better setups everyone here could be well into the top 1000.

I haven't even bothered with it since my last post with the time I set. I was playing with my new Chevelle and Charger I got off auctions. If Ramsea (and his computer helpers) have beaten my S15 Tsukuba trial, then I'll go back and beat it.

Anyway, don't fret. Choose something that's going to be fun for us to do, as I won't even bother with King Cobra.

Those Veilside Supras are kind of hairy. I'm happy with the Enzo, assuming I have one.

I like the shorter tracks too, because it's easy to give information on driving them- compared to something like the full Suzuka, it's nice to have a track like Maple short where you can give advice on just three turns. I think it would be cool to keep track of any challenges and maybe collate them, so people can go back to earlier ones. We can keep a record of Car/Track and each person's PB/assists- maybe edit the first post in the thread to keep a record?

I don't mind it being a "competition" for a week or so, but I was hoping for a little more helpful advice from people. Maybe keeping the trials open after someone "wins" means they might consider offering some advice instead of being tight lipped. You know, once they got to punch the air and scream "IN YOUR FACES, MAGGOTS!" to their web browser after they win the internet, they might relax a bit and be helpful.

I think hotlapping is good discipline, helps people to become consistent, and with advice and help, improves the quality of online racing for everyone, as skills and control are developed. This hopefully leads to better racing, more fun for everyone, and less frustration- either from being too slow, or winning too easy/being punted by someone who could do with improving their control.

I'll have you know that I'm perfectly in control when I punt someone off the track.

Does anyone else find the career mode a bit... easy? You just pimp your car up so it's better than everyone else's and stay in first position all the way round. Even in the ones with HP limits, you can just lighten your car and give it kick ass tyres to make it way better than the competition. Does it get harder later on? I'm level 20 now.
