17. THOR.N: a 'job simulator'.

More accurately, a very short game set in yer dystopian future world where people are raised by an AI and, when they turn 18, are inculcated into a society that expects them to earn Citizen Points from performing isolating and repetitive jobs in support of some unnamed military effort.

The actual gameplay apes the sort of clicker games that are all over the mobile app stores but no more than is required to make its point and that's all over with very quickly, at which point the game quite abruptly ends.

So it's far too short and much more of a story than an actual game but I was quite impressed by how much setting it managed to lay in its very short run time. Thus, while I can't really recommend it as it's such a slight experience, someone involved in its design has the sort of deft world-building touch that could come up with something really impressive in the future.

18. Hitchhiker: another short story game that, like THOR.N came free from the Humble Store's 'originals' programme. This one has you as a mute hitchhiker and the game starts with you already having been picked up by an avuncular southern American farmer type.

Your driver chats away throughout and the interactivity is limited to conversation choices and some rare actual actions. Things start off pretty normal and then slowly get more sinister but, just as it's all warming up, it ends. That makes more sense in this case though as this is allegedly the first part in a series which will see you meet a series of different drivers which will play out the supernatural story.

It's a really interesting idea with great presentation (shades of Firewatch in its visual design) and very good voice acting so it's currently unfinished nature is really the only sticking point at the moment.

Ah man, it’s excellent. It exudes quality throughout from it’s gorgeous celshaded graphics, its wide sweeping vistas that goes on for miles around in all directions, lovely charactisation and finally to the utterly beautiful full ochestra soundtrack.

There’s so much game here: 22 hours for the campaign and I’ve barely touched any side quests, challenge missions or decked out my house with bits of furniture. And that’s the true ending, not that fake ending at the end of Act 2.

It’s more Gravity Rush but betterer.

Mind you, there’s still the problem with the camera from the first game which can get a bit lost, but it’s difficult to think of a solution when the whole premise of the game is that you can move in any direction altering gravity. Some of the combat is a bit finicky as well.

Overall though it was a fabulous game. A genuine honest to goodness AAA Japanese title. They do make some amazing games those crazy kids.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.

It’s a great little game this with a compelling gameplay loop and moment to moment tension. During the last fight it was me and one chap on the outskirts of Ponchinki in a field. My hands were trembling in real life. I’d spotted him on the other side of the circle earlier so I knew generally where he would be. I tried lying down but couldn’t use my sights in the rustling corn. I sat up. I was in a bush not knowing whether I was fully on display. Could this be it? I was just inside the white circle and waited until the blue circle of death pushed further in expecting it would flush him out causing him to stand up and I could get a bead on him. Or did he already have me in his sights? The blue circle was closing and there was nothing. Hang on, was that him? I zoomed in on a spot in the corn. Bang, bang, bang-bang. He was dead and would sulk off to another game because he was forever a loser. I had triumphed against 98 other players. I was forever the winner.

I’m never playing it again because I won the game.

First by using clue words to uncover memories then by putting those into the correct sequence once you've uncovered them all. It's pretty fun for the 15 or so minutes it lasts and a nice palette cleanser of a game. The ending suggests a much larger story but I've no idea of one is actually planned or not.

You swoop around the station collecting clues then present them to the AI in order to solve the death of each crew member and, if pressed hard enough, the AI will confess to any it was responsible for. It's a nice looking thing with a dry sense of humour in it's presentation and the cross-examination mechanic works really well. Good stuff all round; recommended.

It's possibly one of the worst games I've ever played in that it does precisely not a single fucking thing that's interesting or new and doesn't even have a story worth giving a fuck about. It's only potential saving graces are that it's short and doesn't look bad.

23. Accounting+: VR game collaboration between Rick and Morty's Justin Roiland and CrowsCrowsCrows (i.e. Davey Wreden, co-designer of The Stanley Parable). It's as chaotic and ridiculous as you'd imagine with that pedigree and makes for an entertaining couple of hours; though obviously if you've got no love for R+Ms style of humour then you're going to have a bad time here. There are a few secrets to be found but the core game isn't going to take you all that long to blow through so it's not exactly a paragon of value for money. Which makes it the same as most PSVR content though I suppose.

1) Wolfenstein 2 - The New Colossus : That was enjoyable and frustrating in equal measure. The lack of visible indicators when your health is low or you are getting shot to shittery from behind makes for a lot of deaths that you weren't expecting. On the other hand, running around dual wielding shotguns that fire three shells at once with copious amounts of ammo means that replaying sections is less of a chore than in other games. The plot veers from earnest and decent discussion about all manner of politics to shit and fart jokes so much it undermines any message it's trying to get across but fair play for at least raising some of the issues. Overall if you like shooting Nazis with overpowered guns and don't mind just dying out of nowhere every few minutes then this is the game for you. There's literally no point even trying to use stealth by the way, you get two kills in and then all hell breaks loose. Every time.

TEW1 is brilliant. TEW2 is good but worse than the original in almost all respects.

TEW1 had amazing enemy designs and lots of interesting bosses. This hasn’t got that.

A lot was made in the reviews of the “open world” but TEW2 isn’t really open world. Well, you can go from the last level back to the beginning if you wanted to but it’s a fairly linear path through the game but with two largish levels you can wander about in and find some side missions if you’re that way inclined. I thought the open nature of the game was pretty good but I preferred the linear nature of the first game more: It took you on a ridiculous journey through hospitals, castles, cities, basements, torture chamber and so on but this place is stuck with generic rural town No. 17.

The shooting is good, though, and the item management and stuff is really great - just like the OG! I really liked playing the game. It’s less like Resi 4 than TEW1 but still feels fun and tense as the enemies cause you a bit of bother with little effort on their part. It’s certainly not easy and I like that.

Unfortunately when I wasn’t playing the game it was boring shit. The characters are the blandest generic video game hokum that I’ve seen in some time and the dialogue straight from Resident Evil 1. The cutscenes are boring and the new voice for the main character is fucking dreadful.

Finished in 13 hours which, I think, is about 10 hours less than it took me to finish TEW1 and that wasn’t “open world”. So, y’know, that’s probably a negative for open worlds, I think, maybe. The story was all wrapped up so there probably won’t be another TEW ever again. But that’s probably for the best since clearly this outing hasn’t had the love poured into it that the original had. I don’t think either sold particularly well on release. And that’s a real pity but if you don’t support these games we’ll end up MP games with loot boxes up the arsehole and a diminishing amount of AAA single player games.

It’s a solid 6/10.

The core mechanic is the ability, once unlocked, to switch at will between the four seasons which changes certain aspects of the environment to further progress. Not massively original but well implemented and absolutely fucking beautiful throughout; sceenshots and even videos don't do justice to just how pretty it is. If it's got a fault it's that it's not always brilliant at explaining where to go and what to do, but I was never left entirely lost so it was obviously doing something right in that regard; and, one single shitty puzzle aside, my progress was always pretty smooth.

I feel like I'm sort of damning this with faint praise because I really, really enjoyed it while it lasted and it's certainly a lot more than the sum of it's parts.

It's very Myst-y in that you're given no actual instructions and have to puzzle everything out simply by observing the effects of your experimentation and spotting patterns.

The first two episodes were really good--much better than you'd expect from something like this--but this third episode was a bit short and actually ended with certain objects not having been required. I presume ep 4 will round that out but it's not a great design; the previous eps were entirely self-contained so you knew that if there was something you could fiddle with then it would be required. Here though I spent no small amount of time poking at certain machines that ended up not being required and this left me stuck for a good while thinking I was missing something.

Also, the environment design was a bit off. A couple of sections of the level were buried down long anonymous looking tunnels that were so dark you couldn't even see the other end unless you sort of stumbled across it (or went down the tunnel backwards) which is pretty shitty. You want to challenge people with good puzzle design, not by hiding entire sections of your game.

We'll see what ep 4 brings but ep 3 has been really disappointing given how awesome the preceding parts were.

29. Life is Strange: narrative teenage-angst time-travel drama a-go-go. The quality of the episodes is definitely patchy, and some of the characters are off-putting (Cloe in general is a fucking asshole), but it's lovely to look at and when the narrative beats land, they land proper; to the point that I actually found myself tearing up a couple of times. There's an argument to be made that everything's stretched out a bit much given the ~3.5 hours per episodes--and I do feel that some of the 'game' elements were just added in to avoid 'walking simulator' accusations--but none of it's too onerous and maybe a shorter runtime would've softened the impact of some parts too much. Good stuff, though possibly not as good as common wisdom would have us believe.

Well, I finished the campaign and prestieged in MP, so I'm going to call this done (although I'm still going to play the shit out of it). The campaign was short (which is a good thing) and had one of the cleverest bits I've seen in modern videogaming in some years (I won't spoil it, though).

MP is brutal and I'm shit at it, but much fun is had being either a JUMPY BOI or a STOMPY BOI. Beth the Titan also approves.

Titanfall 2 is brilliant.

Finished the campaign, now to mop up some moons if I can be bothered. It’s a pretty ace game, as everyone knows, but what stops this being a 10/10 game is the lack of any decent and/or memorable music throughout. There’s one ace level with the signature tune but other than that? Nothing. Where’s the Beep Block Skyway? Where’s the Gusty Garden? Where’s the Puzzle Plank Galaxy? Mario is surely known for the kick ass tunes.

I thought it was a super ace game and it’s plenty fun but the lack of awesome tunes is a reet pisser.

8/10

Loved this. Basically an Undertale/Earthbound-style RPG where all the combat is replaced with golf. Brilliant 16-bit-era graphics except the speech bubbles which are hi-res. Some great little Easter eggs and side games too. A funny script and had me smiling throughout. A surprisingly deep game of golf too.

I just need to mop up some side quests and I'm done. You can also play 2 player golf rounds using one pair of joy cons.

31. There is no Game
32. Papers, Please: oppressive communist misery simulator.

For anyone who doesn't know what this is, you're a border guard for a fictional Cold War-era eastern european country called Arstozka and you're tasked with allowing/denying entry to your glorious country for all the poor, trudging saps queueing for your attention every morning.

Checking someone's papers starts out easy with only a passport to look at, but the complexity ramps up every day with the paranoid administration introducing more and more paperwork hoops for entrants to jump through; and thus for you to check. After denying or rejecting someone you're given a penalty if you screwed up. The first two each day are just warning but any subsequent mistakes cost you five credits from your wages each time. Which is crucial because you've got an entire family depending on your to keep them warm, fed and filled with medicine for the round of lurgies they seem to all catch at the drop of a fucking hat. Ultimately this is a balancing act because people will ask you to help them in various ways which will always involve wrongly allowing/denying someone's entry so you're weighing these morally positive decisions against the income they'll cost you and the impact that'll have on your family.

There is also an over-arching plot that runs through the game involving a shadowy resistance movement which you can choose to get involved with or not, and some characters that pop-up regularly to help give an impression of an actual narrative.

Obviously the core of the game is repetitive and somewhat mind-numbing but that's true to the theme and, if you're weird like me, there's a lot of 'fun' to be had from correctly applying all the rules. The 'side missions' and dialogue with the entrants also helps to keep it from becoming boring. It could be argued that it goes on for a bit too long because you've seen pretty much all of the game's tricks well before the final day approaches. There are shitloads of endings and different decisions you can make so I did appreciate the ability to replay the game from any day you've already completed so you can see some of the different outcomes without replaying the whole thing.

Also, I don't know if I'm just awful at it or if it's genuinely really difficult but I can't see how you'd be able to keep your entire family alive. In the end I managed to escape with my son and wife, but uncle and mother-in-law were sacrificed very early on; and I had zero hope of ever helping out my niece.

Overall: unique, funny, interesting but perhaps a tad too long.

33. INSIDE: I had a hankering to replay this and, a couple of annoying puzzles aside, it's just as incredible as I remember. Seriously, if you haven't played this you're doing yourself a real disservice.

What I'd managed to completely forget somehow was the atmosphere of the thing; I'm struggling to think of any game that could even touch it in that regard. The environments are properly haunting most of the way through but it's the sound design that's the real star of the show here. The audio's just so subtle and effective that there were times I paused the game thinking some aspect of the sound was coming from my flat or outside the window. Less is definitely more here and I was blown away anew by that aspect of the game.

This is pretty much why I'm uninterested in buying it.

Relatedly, I recently got given "this is the police". Started off OK, but became increasingly clear that playing by the book wasn't possible. Final straw was the request to sack all black people. I stopped at that point.

I wasn't even getting into the ethical implications of the game. Even if Papers Please! was about welcoming refugees at the border with open arms, confetti and jelly beans, it would still be not fun. But yes, being a human misery simulator makes things even worse. That's why i was wondering if it could be used as an educational tool to highlight the absurdity of political borders.

Another game that also has the same problem is This War of Mine. Although is a better game than Papers Please, it's still not fun enough for it compensate being such a downer.

34. Little Nightmares: puzzle-platformer in the Limbo vein that sees you guiding a mute girl-child through a succession of environments avoiding the monstrous adults that inhabit each.

It certainly looks the part and, aside from being arguably a bit too dark at times, the visuals are wonderful in their grotesqueness with the adult enemies being particularly disgusting to behold. The gameplay itself though falters frequently due to the physics of the thing being a fucking shitshow. It was developed by some folks that were involved in LittleBigPlanet and they've certainly brought that series' love of awful woolly controls with them. Most of the platforming is straightforward enough, but there are multiple sections where responsiveness is required and these just become fucking teeth-grindingly frustrating as you try, and fail, the same thing over and over and over again.

Even those sections aside, the game just fails to do anything particularly interesting and I was generally pretty bored while I played through it. It was reviewed up the wazoo with loads of publications lauding it and I'm genuinely struggling to understand why, given that it stumbles between irritating and boring. Avoid!

35. GNOG: I said this about it last year and stand by that - "a beautiful puzzle game (of sorts) stuffed with the sort of charm that's Doublefine's stock in trade. Each level is essentially a puzzle box that gives you no specific guidance for unravelling it or even what your aim actually is each time. The fact that your progression through each is as smooth as butter despite that is testament to how incredibly well the visual and audio design wordlessly guides you through each scenario; and it's just flat-out really, really good fun. It could be argued that it's too easy and too short but I enjoyed my time with it so much that I didn't really care. Oh, and although the gameplay doesn't change at all by playing it in VR, it makes good use of the extra depth to throw in some lovely touches so comes even more recommended for the PSVR set."

It really is just flat out incredibly good fun and charming as all fuck; if you can play it without a smile on your face then you're basically a monster. Everyone should play GNOG, it's lovely.
36. Here They Lie: PSVR 'horror' game. Though it doesn't rely on jump scares and whatnot and is really more of a walking simulator that takes you through a succession of fucked up locations. It has some really nice ideas in places and the environment design often does some very, very nice stuff with large scale VR-friendly vistas but there are swathes of it that just aren't all that interesting and it goes on for way too long. It's not a bad game or anything, and certain aspects of it will stay with me for sure which does indicate it hit it's marks at times, but it's difficult to recommend overall.

That was quite a ride. Ludicrous simple mash-up of an idle clicker/incremental game with a twin-stick shooter. But if you like to watch numbers go up ever-faster (and who doesn't?) then it's also ludicrously compelling.
