Post subject:  Windows 10 Live Account Issues

Our cleaner has managed to lock herself out of her laptop

It used to be a local account logon with simple password, but now when you boot it up the primary account is a Live.co.uk account

She said that the account is hers but has no idea of passwords, etc, or how this got changed, there is also "no log on as another user" option

Also turns out her granddaughter needs all her college work on said laptop by Monday

Any ideas how I fix this (assuming no chance of getting live password) I can of course strip the disk out and rebuild it with another one then copy back the data. I don't really have time with work\kids to be doing that sort of stuff these days, so hoping there is some sort of Windows 10 PE based tool I can use?

Can she try and log into her live account on a working PC and see if she can reset the password there with security questions etc?

Windows 10 is bitlocker by default isn't it which would fuck that workaround. Certainly the last two I've had it was activated on startup.

You should pay your cleaner more so that she can afford a new laptop with windows hello. Issue resolved.

Sadly, Bitlocker is not on by default.

We have to turn them on at work.

Is there an admin account? Might have to go into safe mode, but could still get files maybe

Bitlocker is only on Enterprise anyway, isn't it? Or am I thinking of Win 7?

Windows Vista or 7 Ultimate, Windows Vista or 7 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 8.1 Enterprise, or Windows 10 Pro.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not a Bitlocker issue then.

I don't think anyone thought it was, but were instead asking whether popping out the disk and sticking it in another machine would be viable.

Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > BitLocker Drive Encryption > Operating System Drives > Require additional authentication at startup = "Enabled".

Check the box in the window below "enabled" that says "Allow Bitlocker"

You don't need a TPM module, although it is preferable. You can use Bitlocker with a USB stick too.

Thanks what I'm doing as at least after a little bit of messing around I can leave to install then copy the data back

All done now, I was impressed with Windows Update. I used a Windows 10 ISO with updates to August 2015 to do the install.

I had set aside 4 hours or more for all the updates based on previous experience and the age of the hardware.

Reckon it took 45 mins to get it on the Creator update.
