Really didn't know what to say to our four year old daughter the other day. She was coming up with a list of homonyms. "So there's bats that fly and there's bats that we play with" etc etc. Then she came out with "there's chicken that we eat and there's chickens that run around!".

I just said "err, yeah". She adores animals and I didn't think it was a conversation that either of us were ready for.

I remember having that conversation when I was young. Although it was ham and pigs.

It only put me off the not too nice laughing cow ham cheese that led to the conversation. TV were in Normandy, on the patio.

Just saying,.

Interesting. We've already had that conversation with our 3 and 5 year old. They're fine that beef comes from cows but I don't think they quite understand how it comes from cows.

That's not something I'm particularly keen to explore in depth either, to be honest.

Yeah she'll probably be completely unphased. I think it's more me. I eat meat but I find it to be a source of internal conflict. It's not something that I find that I can wholly justify to myself. And that makes it feel a little more awkward than it might be.

Why not? We're at the top of the food chain at the moment so we need to take advantage while we can. It might not always be that way. For instance, Dinosaurs could come back.

Could be worse, could be 'Daddy, where does cat food come from?'

I've had the meat conversation with mine since they were old enough to eat it. It's important to me personally that if we're going to consume meat we have a full understanding of where it comes from and how it gets on our plates. I don't hold back when discussing the process. (By the same token I also try not to waste it - e.g. if I cook a chicken I use the bones for stock etc.)

Despite my good intentions I still have to regularly explain to my kids that the animal on the plate is the same one that runs around a field. I think they just can't fully connect the two.

Go on a survival weekend and snare a rabbit.

Or, for even more fun, get the kids chickens this Christmas, let them build up an emotional relationship with them over the year, then serve them on Christmas Day 2018

I had a pet duck when I was about 9. I lived on a smallholding with grandparents, uncle and cousins. I had to grow up understanding the link between animal and food. Just one of those realities of the everyday.

Once my uncle served up a Strange chicken and kept asking me if I liked the special chicken he cooked (I have a horrible memory of it tasting oily and strong, and nothing else). Anyway, you’ve guessed it was my pet duck.

It absolutely ruined me and caused a massive family rift. I don’t think my grandfather ever forgave him. He tolerated him some years later, but I don’t think he ever again liked him as a person.

I refused to eat so much after then and it completely ruined my trust in people. I’ll never forgive him. He ruined a massive part of my childhood and he was evil. I dislike that man so very, very much. Now my body can’t process meat properly so I can’t be bothered with it. I used to say that I had no moral objections as such and had no problem with it, but I can feel proper squiffy trying to cut/prepare uncooked meat for Russell and Darwin now.

No, no, I know you were joking, I don’t think that’s untowards in any way, but so close to what happened to me that I kind of felt internally it would be weird (to me) not to mention it. I think I’ve actually mentioned it before.

I despise that man for so many reasons, but this is something that has consequences right through to today and really affects me still.

Oh, no, I don’t believe that at all. My grandmother Was very much family oriented, blood thicker than water under the bridge stuff that I do not go for at all, so I was unfortunate enough to have had to see him throughout my years growing up and, frankly, until she died. I know and have observed enough in him to know with some certainty it was calculated to hurt. He made such a big play of trying to get me to say I was enjoying my food that day. He wanted me to say I was enjoying eating my own pet, for his sick amusement, and so he could tell people.

I put up with him for the sake of my grandmother, and I decided that when she died I’d never let him near me ever again. It’s the real reason I didn’t go to her funeral (though I said something else), as the only person in the world I’d put myself in a room with him for was her, and she no longer would know, so I found myself saying goodbye to her alone, because I can’t bear that man.

Gosh, sorry, I’ve got myself quite upset now. It really was something that will affect me all my days

Manic and quite bizarre, but way better resourced and so much closer to home.

The customer facing IT systems seemed pretty good at first glance but had a load of hidden surprises. The internal IT systems were almost non existent but that’s being sorted very rapidly. I’ve got 7 people to delegate stuff to and they all know their stuff, and we can lower the tone quite effectively. “Your mum’s one of those things” and similar phrases have turned into a nice running joke.

There’s been at least five new starters every week so far, and a second office opening in Birmingham soon. Don’t think it will be a long term job, but I’ve been told I’m “Smashing it out of the park” which I’m taking as a good sign.

If the goal is only "get VR". But the PSVR plan also gets him a PS4 Pro, which is worth considering.
