He would have been just out of a 4:3 shot, yes. You can see him clearly on widescreen.

That would have been better if they were a bit more solid on Friends - Phoebe is by far the smartest (and the toughest). Funny, though.

We had to break in to our 2nd house on the day we moved in, not because the lock didn’t work, because the solicitor had lost the keys. My father in law broke the window on the kitchen door and my wife had to lean in and knock the bolt on the bottom of the door with a hammer to get it open. I knew little of this as I was in the van we’d hired to move our stuff.

It's not true. Film doesn't have infinite resolution, if you blow it up too much it gets grainy. Buffy seasons 1 and 2 are shot on cheap/coarse 16mm and they're grainy as fuck at even DVD resolutions.

Speaking of Buffy, it's the God Emperor of shitty 16:9 transfers of content originally matted for 4:3. You can see boom mikes, the edges of sets, and random crew members standing around in the wider frames.

Speaking of content being remastered into different aspect rations, I once lost a bet because some frames of Ghostbusters are larger in 4:3 than they are in 2.35:1. A friend swore blind you could see Ray's hands in one shot of the TV cut (specifically, that he drops his PK meter when they see Slimer.) I said no way, they always cut the 4:3 frame out of the middle of the wider cinematic original frame. I was mostly right as a general rule but catastrophically wrong in this specific instance, there are some shots where they had a larger frame and it looked OK so they used it.

This is the ongoing lie of digital - decent film stock is really high resolution. I think it's something like 35mm goes up to 4kish before diminishing returns set in, 70mm is way past 8k. But it does have to be high quality film stock treated well by good cinematographers, focus pullers and so on to be evident.

HC has the entire series on DVD, which when I looked at it a couple of years ago, looks for all the world like it was recorded onto VHS from an NTSC feed and then faithfully transferred to DVD. It's that bad, quality wise.

It probably was. People just don't care about quality when they can get it done in a quarter the time and make the same money anyway. I guess you know that though. Not you personally, but photo stuff you've seen.

I was hugely irked by Invader Zim when they finally released a dvd set - it only happened because of piracy but the couldn't even be arsed using a good deinterlacing setting so it looks worse than what people recorded off satellite broadcasts.

Man, what happened to(mainstream) rap music? Is it just me getting old? Is it that you have to clear all the samples now so it's easier to go with generic beats? Has it just had all the fun and innovation sucked out by the corporates?

Plus Bishop Lamont’s (previous Dre’s protege) “The Reformation” is dope and out in the wild. Try that.

Also, agree with Sat about fucking 'Soundcloud rappers', a lot of that stuff is god fucking awful. If I ever met Lil Pump in real life I'd be genuinely tempted to murder him on fucking principle. The fact that Gucci Gang is a successful song makes the case alone for the human race being snuffed out.

I'm currently working my way through Peter Doggett's 'Electric Shock', a rather hefty volume tracing the history of pop from the earliest days of recording. I'm fascinated by the connections between artists and styles and the evolution of various genres, but it's probably a case of too much information as without having samples to hand or knowing about the artists beforehand I'm having to take his word for it.

I dunno, that Jidenna tune is pretty good, but it needs a better beat.

Mind you I might be unusual, in that I like the whole package, I'd rather listen to a simple rap over some great breaks than an intricate, clever flow over these minimalist beats you get nowadays.

"I Wish" by Skee-Lo has just come on over my headphones, and that's a great example. Simple, clear flow over a great beat with a great rap-a-long chorus.

Huh. There's a certain floorboard you can stand on in my flat that knocks the house phone out of handsfree. It doesn't disconnect the call or have any other effect, it just switches it from the speaker to the handset. What the actual fuck?

Not especially. I mean I'm assuming the phone cable runs under it because anything else would be completely bonkers, but it's just a really weird thing to happen just from applying pressure to the cable.

For clarity, it's not an actual floorboard but a section of laminate.

The wire is probably tight and the pressure is tugging it around/out the socket(s) a bit. Give it some slack where you can and it’ll probably stop.

Either that or you’ve got an Indian Jones style pressure plate that’s being stopped by the wire. Removing the wire will cause a giant boulder to smash through your living room causing a big draft.
